Students give four reasons why it is important that Christians believe that God is the Father. Students look at the Genesis account of creation. They make a list of what it means when it says that God is Creator, and what the Genesis account shows them that God is supposed to be like. Students draw a mind map with the words ‘Son of God’ in the centre, and write as many connected ideas onto the mind map as possible. Students discuss the idea of Jesus being the Son of God rather than having an earthly father. In groups, students write down reasons why Christians think it is important that Jesus is the Son of God and then hold a vote to work out which are the four most important reasons. Topic 6: The meaning and importance of Christian beliefs about salvation from sin. To identify the meaning of Christian beliefs about salvation from sin. To understand the reasons why it is important for Christians have salvation from sin. Edexcel GCSE in Religious Studies — Unit 10 Section 1: Beliefs and Values 2 Students work out from the video and from their knowledge of the Holy Spirit in the Bible what the Holy Sprit means for Christians, and write a five-line description. They write a list of four reasons why the Holy Spirit is important for Christians and then a list of four reasons why the Holy Spirit might not be important for some Christians. Students revise the meaning of sin and the problems associated with sin (entry into heaven). Teacher explains what ‘salvation from sin’ means. Students produce a poster explaining what salvation is, and explaining the word ‘atonement’. In pairs, students produce a list of reasons why salvation from sin is important to Christians. The meaning and importance of loving God and how love of God affects Christians’ lives. To understand the reasons why loving God is important for Christians. To understand how love of God can affect Christians’ lives. Students make a list of reasons why loving God is important. Teacher gives students a sheet with the hours of the day written down the side. They write onto the sheet how at each hour loving God might affect someone's life, e.g. prayer, helping others, going to church, wearing a cross. Students divide students into groups. One group designs a poster based on The Most Important Commandment, one on the Good Samaritan and one on the Parable of the Sheep and Goats. The posters should include the whole of the reference and an explanation of the teachings. The Edexcel GCSE Religious Studies 10C Student Book, Section 1.9 could be used. Students give a presentation to the rest of the class using the poster to help explain what the teachings are and why they are important. Topic 8: The meaning and importance of Christian teachings on the love of others (Mark 12:29–31, Luke 10:25–37, Matthew 25:31–46). To identify the meaning of Christian teachings on the love of others as shown in The Most Important Commandment, The Good Samaritan and The Parable of the Sheep and the Goats. To understand the reasons why these Christian teachings are important. Topic 9: To identify how love of God is shown in the life of a religious community. Students research a religious community, using computers if possible. They then produce a booklet advertising for people to join this religious community so that they can show love of God. Booklets are available from religious communities. To identify how love of others is shown in the life of a religious community. Students draw a table to record four reasons why it is important for religious communities to show love of God and others, and four reasons others might give that it is not important that religious communities show love of God and love of others. They collect a newsletter/ bulletin. Their aim is to find out what happens within the parish that shows love of God and love of others. In pairs or groups they share ideas and add more to their own drawing.
