MILITARY LEAGUE NORTH ORIENTEERING (MLNO) INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM
CHAMPIONSHIP – SCOTTON MOOR – WED 14 JUN 17
1.
Introduction. Sport is a major facet of military life; it improves morale and team building,
competitive spirit, physical robustness and fitness and the pursuit of excellence and enjoyment. A
truly successful sport is one that is open to all ranks and positively encourages development at
every level; Orienteering is all this!
2.
General. The MLNO Team and Individual Championships will take place at Scotton Moor,
on Wed 14 Jun 17. The event is ‘pre-entry’ only. Entry details are at para 7 and will be published
on a flyer, on the British Army Orienteering Club (BAOC) website and on the MLN-O Facebook
page.
3.
Purpose. The purpose of the Team and Individual Championship is to:
a.
Annually establish the Individual and Unit Champions within the UK(North) Sport area
b.
Expose competitors to high quality orienteering maps and planning; as well as
technically demanding and physically challenging orienteering
c.
Expose the local civilian orienteering community to the best of the MLNO teams
IOT support community engagement, recruitment and develop orienteering as a military skill.
4.
Eligibility. The Team and Individual Championship is open to all tri-service Regular and
Reserve units from within the UK (North) Sport designated area and invited others. Civilian
competitors may enter as club or ad-hoc teams or/and as individuals.
5.
Competition Format. Three courses will be available, Blue, Lt Green and Red. Teams are
to consist of a minimum of 6 pers (Major Unit) or 4 pers (Minor Unit/Civilian) – to encourage
participation there is no maximum team size. Teams can elect to split their teams across courses
as they wish. Individual points will be awarded as per normal League format (max of 100 on Blue,
75 on Lt Green and 50 on Red). The winning unit will be the team with the highest total score for
their best 6 (4 for Minor units/Civ teams) runners. The leading (military) time on the Blue course
will be deemed the Individual Championship Winner

Penalties. A missed control will result in an individuals disqualification and no score.
7.
Team Entry. Teams are to enter using the on-line system at www.clok.org.uk/cgibin/MLN_entry_01.pl (open for this event from 25 May) and as detailed on the event flyer. Minor
amendments to entries may be made at Registration on the day of the event. Cost of entry is £3
per military individual and £5 for civilians, payable on the day – the additional charge for civilians is
to cover Insurance. Payment by cheque, payable to ‘102 Bn REME’, or cash will be accepted.
8.
Mapping/EMIT. The map will be printed on waterproof paper. Control descriptions will be
on the map; loose control descriptions will be available for Blue and Lt Green courses. The EMIT
electronic punching system will be used throughout the competition.
9.
Start Times. Registration will open at 1030hrs with starts from 1100hrs until 1330hrs. A
minimum of 4 minutes is required between team members. The last team members must start
before other team members have finished. The course will close at 1500hrs.
10. Attendance. Attendance is voluntary but competitors are responsible for their own personal
safety and for assessing their own ability to complete the course.
11. Prizes/Results/Prize Giving. The Major Unit MLNO Championship Trophy will be awarded
to the winning team with medals for six team members of the first two teams. The Minor Unit
Trophy will be awarded to the winning Minor Unit with medals for four team members. Individual
medals will be awarded to the first three military male, first military female and first civilian finishers
on each of the courses. Results will be placed on the BAOC website, MLN-O Facebook page and
distributed by the League Secretary as soon as possible after the event. Prizes will be presented
by the League Chairman, Brig D Hargreaves, on the final MLNO event of the season on Wed 28
Jun 17.
12. MLNO Points. MLNO League Individual and League points will be awarded as per a normal
league event.
13. Allowances and Service transport. Orienteering is classified as military training; it is not
an Army ‘Recognised’ or ‘Approved’ Sport. Therefore participants are entitled to normal duty
allowances detailed in JSP 752. Service transport may be used subject to the normal rules for
military training and charged to Purpose of travel Code (POT 13). All charges against Public
Funds incurred by individuals or units are to be charged against their appropriate unit training
budget with the prior authority of the budget holder.
14. Medical/Safety. In the event of an emergency, competitors should call 999 in the first
instance and then coordinate with the event organizer. A copy of the EASP covering the Risk
Assessment and event safety will be clearly displayed at Registration for all competitors to read
prior to competing.
15. Mandatory Dress and Equipment. Competitors are required to wear full arm and leg cover
(no shorts or vests) and carry a compass. The carrying of a whistle to alert other competitors that
assistance is required is recommended. Competitors not observing the dress and equipment rules
will not be permitted to start the event. Team Captains are to brief their teams accordingly.
16. Authority. 2016DIN07-124, Authority for Army Orienteering, is the overarching authority for
Army service personnel participating in AOA sponsored events and competitions to be classified as
official individual military training. It is recognized that physical training is an integral part of service
life and is essential for military effectiveness; technically difficult and physically demanding
orienteering plays a key role in this military output.
