BACKGROUND – WOP AFRICA IMPLEMENTATION
FRAMEWORK
 2006: UNSGAB launched WOP concept to accelerate the process of access to
WATSAN services and help reach the MDGs
 2008: WOP Africa program launched as a sub-program of AfWA to promote
knowledge sharing among African WATSAN utilities throughout partnership
approach of mentor/mentee
 2010: funding obtained from AWF/AfDB (490,000 Euros and USAID ($3M)
 2014: Program’ secretariat moved from Johannesburg, SA, to AfWA headquarter
in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire
 2016: Launching of the RASOP-Africa project, a 3 year project of partnerships on
sanitation for improving FSM under funding of the BMGF
 2017: Launching of the AfriCap partnerships’ project for improving capacity of laboratories on
water quality control, under funding of USAID

 2002: AfWA originated from the AUWS created in 1980, by merging with
IWA-ESAR which was active in the eastern and southern African regions

1. Implement 10 partnerships on NRW
2. Carry out the 3rd benchmarking exercise in African Water utilities and install a
utility performance database

3. Establish and operate a WOP Africa program secretariat
4. Implement some WOPs on improving NRW trends and sanitation services in Africa
(WOPs on NRW and WOPs on sanitation)
5. Establish and operate a Nigeria WOP Platform
6. Establish an African Water Academy (AWA)

Establishment and operation of WOP-Africa Secretariat: installation and staffing
of the Secretariat
Establishment and operation of a Nigeria WOP platform: installation and staffing,
(03 WOPs and benchmarking process improved)
Full implementation of 18 WOPs: 7 WOPs funded by AWF/AfDB and 11 WOPs
funded by USAID on NRW (incl. 3 WOPs under Nigeria Platform and 4 WOPs on
sanitation); 18 PIPs
Conduct of 3rd benchmarking exercise: data collection, analysis and validation;
utility performance report 2011-2013;
Program visibility and communication: conduct of 6 program sessions during 8
international events, conception of website & communication materials, capitalization &
dissemination of factsheets on WOP good practices
