SC HO OL COM P UT E RS DVD Playback September 21, 2009 How to play DVDs on your school computer. This document will help explain how to play DVDs on your classroom or school computer. We now use a program called Media Player Classic, as it is free, and seems to work rather well. Better than VLC, which was our previously preferred playback program. Also, I like alliteration. Either follow along with this helpful manual, or find your own way using this icon on your desktop: For help with other or similar topics, try our website Help & Support section under the Educators tab. PAGE 2 DISTRICT COMPUTERS – DVD PLAYBACK The first step is to log into your computer and check for this is icon on your desktop: Like this: Fig.1 PAGE 3 DISTRICT COMPUTERS – DVD PLAYBACK Important Note: If you do not have this icon, get your local school tech rep or admin member to send an email to [email protected] with the request for installation of ‘Media Player Classic’, along with your computer name or room number. When you put a DVD in your computer, the autorun should normally pop-up, and one would naturally assume (like on your computers at home) that you choose Windows Media Player and hit OK. This is incorrect, hit Cancel. Fig.2 Of course, if you put the DVD in before you logged in, or if this doesn’t pop up… ignore this step! PAGE 4 DISTRICT COMPUTERS – DVD PLAYBACK Next, double-click the media player classic icon (You remember that little guy, he was in Fig.1), and the program should open and look like this: Fig.3 Now click the file menu, as arrowed above, in Fig.3. PAGE 5 DISTRICT COMPUTERS – DVD PLAYBACK Now click OPEN DVD from the file menu, and the video should start playing. Fig.4 It should immediately play, and look something like the next picture. PAGE 6 DISTRICT COMPUTERS – DVD PLAYBACK Fig.5 Double-click anywhere on the screen to go into FULL SCREEN mode, or click VIEW FULLSCREEN. And you’re done. Also: It should be noted that the above isn’t a real picture of “An Inconvenient Truth”, I PhotoShopped that in there because the main screen for the DVD I used, “Memento”, was incomprehensible and didn’t fit in well with whole ‘School’ theme I was going for. But I do enjoy Al Gore’s film, check it out if you haven’t seen it. There’s a clip from Futurama in it that’s pretty swell. Anyway, thanks. Grande Prairie and District Catholic Schools I.T. Department.
