Set-‐up for Demo:
-‐
Set-‐up: Whiteboard with blank empathy map, and space on side for Tensions, Contradictions, and Surprises. Stools, post-‐its, sharpies, expo.
Bill: "We will unpack our empathy work by retelling our team what we saw and heard -‐-‐ and capturing all the data using a user empathy map. We will watch our performers here demo the process" Part 1: Unpacking using Empathy Map
5:00
Jill: "Let me tell you about one of the users I spoke with. As you listen, write down what you note about what the user said, did, thought, and felt. Jill proceeds to tell a story from the empathy work -‐ using an actual story from the empathy module is a bonus. Others write headlines on post-‐its, and paste on the empathy map real-‐
time. The group also captures "Tensions, Contradictions, and Surprises" as they arise.
[Give the audience post-‐its and sharpies, have them listen and write down headlines too.]
Part 2: Leaping from observations to insights
3:00
On a second board, draw up a chasm to jump over (i.e. leaping from observations to insights).
"Look back to your User Empathy Map and the Tensions, Contradictions, and Surprises you captured -‐-‐ and now we ask ourselves "Why is this important?", "What can we infer from this?"
Discuss as a team and write down potential insights -‐-‐ one per post-‐it -‐-‐ and put them up on the board.
Part 3: Sketch out user and details
3:00
Sketch up the user and headline a few details about the user that are relevant to the person and the insights you've discovered.
