We l c o m e t o P e a c e w i t h C h r i s t
We’re glad that you’ve joined with us today to receive the gifts of
God’s grace given in his Son Jesus Christ. It is our sincere hope that
these provide you spiritual refreshment and strength, confirming
you in the promise of eternal life that is ours in Christ, both now,
and in the age to come.
Since worship involves substantial things, you may wish to
prepare through personal reflection and prayer, as many in our
congregation do. To facilitate this, we intend that the pre-service
time within the sanctuary be a quiet, tranquil environment, and we
do appreciate everyone’s considerateness in this regard. The time
before worship also offers an opportunity to familiarize yourself
with the order of service, which is detailed in the following pages.
If you are a guest with us today and would like to learn more about
our congregation, please ask a greeter or an usher for a copy of our
welcome packet. Also, if time permits, take a moment to speak with
our pastor; he would love to make a personal connection with you.
Christ Jesus Has Paid the Cost of Discipleship for You
A disciple of Jesus Christ will “bear his own cross” (Luke 14:27)
and follow the Lord through death into life. Discipleship is costly
because it crucifies the old man with “all that he has” (Luke
14:33), in order to raise up the new man in Christ. The disciple
disavows “his own father and mother and wife and children and
brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life” (Luke 14:26), in
deference to Christ. That way of the cross is impossible, except
that Christ Jesus has already paid the cost. His cross is set before
you as “life and good, death and evil” (Deut. 30:15). Taking up
His cross is to “choose life, that you and your offspring may live,
loving the LORD your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to
him” (Deut. 30:19–20). To live that life in Christ is also to bear
His cross in love, “that your goodness might not be by compulsion
but of your own accord” (Philemon 14).

Psalm 1
~Chanted responsively between the cantor and congregation.
Blessèd is the man who walks not in the counsel of the | wicked,*
nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of | scoffers;
but his delight is in the law | of the LORD,*
and on his law he meditates | day and night.
He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in
its season, and its leaf does not | wither.*
In all that he does, he | prospers.
The wicked | are not so,*
but are like chaff that the wind | drives away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the | judgment,*
nor sinners in the congregation of the | righteous;
for the LORD knows the way of the | righteous,*
but the way of the wicked will | perish.
Glory be to the Father and | to the Son*
and to the Holy | Spirit;
as it was in the be- | ginning,*
is now, and will be forever. | Amen.

First Lesson—1 Kings 17:8–16
The Widow of Zarephath
8
Then the word of the LORD came to him, 9“Arise, go to
Zarephath, which belongs to Sidon, and dwell there. Behold, I have
commanded a widow there to feed you.” 10So he arose and went to
Zarephath. And when he came to the gate of the city, behold, a
widow was there gathering sticks. And he called to her and said,
“Bring me a little water in a vessel, that I may drink.” 11And as she
was going to bring it, he called to her and said, “Bring me a morsel
of bread in your hand.” 12And she said, “As the LORD your God
lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a
little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I
may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it
and die.” 13And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you
have said. But first make me a little cake of it and bring it to me,
and afterward make something for yourself and your son. 14For
thus says the LORD the God of Israel, ‘The jar of flour shall not be
spent, and the jug of oil shall not be empty, until the day that the
LORD sends rain upon the earth.’” 15And she went and did as Elijah
said. And she and he and her household ate for many days. 16The
jar of flour was not spent, neither did the jug of oil become empty,
according to the word of the LORD that he spoke by Elijah.

Epistle Lesson—Galatians 5:25-6:10
25
If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. 26Let
us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one
another.
Bear One Another’s Burdens
1
Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who
are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep
watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. 2Bear one another’s
burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. 3For if anyone thinks he is
something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. 4But let each
one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in
himself alone and not in his neighbor. 5For each will have to bear
his own load.
6
One who is taught the word must share all good things with
the one who teaches. 7Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for
whatever one sows, that will be also reap. 8For the one who sows
to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one
who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9And
let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will
reap, if we do not give up. 10So then, as we have opportunity, let us
do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the
household of faith.

Gospel Lesson—Matthew 6:24-34
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the
one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise
the other. You cannot serve God and money.
Do Not Be Anxious
25
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life,
what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body,
what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and body more
than clothing? 26Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor
reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feed them.
Are you not of more value than they? 27And which of you by being
anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28And why are
you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how
they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29yet I tell you, even Solomon
in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30But if God so
24
clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is
thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of
little faith? 31Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we
eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32For the
Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father
knows that you need them all. 33But seek first the kingdom of God
and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
34
“There do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow
will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Generosity Thoughts
September 4 – Proper 18
Luke 14:33 “So therefore, any one of you who does not renounce
all that he has cannot be my disciple.” None of what we have is
ours – it all belongs to God. That is the foundation of Christian
stewardship. What we have been given is to be used for God’s
purposes according to our callings in home, Church, and society.
As we learn to leave generously in these callings, we renounce our
ownership of our wealth. It's not “ours,” it's His; God owns, we
manage for the furtherance of His goals.
TAG - (Tuesday Afternoon Group)
