La Alianza Hispana continues to be the lead agency for Boston’s Latino Community Founded in 1971 in Roxbury, Massachusetts La Alianza Hispana has fostered the development of other organizations to meet the growing need of the Latino community. La Alianza Hispana is a community based nonprofit organization serving the Latino community and all residents of the surrounding neighborhoods. Our goal is to empower individuals and families, strengthen communities and develop leaders through high-quality education and social services, advocacy and community organizing. Intended Impact La Alianza Hispana’s primary focus is to serve Latino families who live in the surrounding neighborhoods and to help them develop the emotional, cultural, educational, and employability skills needed to become active and productive members of their community. Our overarching goal is to empower individuals and families, strengthen communities and develop leaders through high-quality education and social services, advocacy and community organizing. Our services are culturally and linguistically integrated in our community. People and families are the heart of our work, and our impact is measured in the number of individuals and families who have: stabilized their lives, developed healthy parenting styles, are living independent, healthy lives, and have obtained sustainable employment. We conduct our clinical social work and intensive case management through a strengths-based, family-centered and collaborative approach. Our comprehensive services aim to empower individuals and families to successfully overcome various behavioral and mental health, as well as systemic challenges. Family and Community Health services offers youth and families support in dealing with poverty, homelessness, HIV/AIDS and responding to social determinants of health challenges through education and case management. ¡Cuídate! (Take Care of Yourself) is our youth outreach and training prevention program to enable Latino teens to reduce HIV and related infection risks acquired through sexual activity. Another focus of the program is to prevent pregnancy. Youth receive help about prevention and learn practical decision-making and relationship building skills. Girls Moving Forward provides ongoing educational peer groups for adolescent girls 13-17. They have opportunities to build healthy relationships, engage in conflict resolution, increase self-esteem, and experience the positive benefits of feeling to connected to others. We provide an environment where girls can practice expressing feelings, learn effective coping skills, and receive positive messages about being female. La Alianza Hispana and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Campaign This Summer La Alianza Hispana joins HCFA and nine other communitybased outreach organizations in an outreach and education campaign to reach and educate the Latino (Spanish) programs across the Commonwealth. The campaign consists of presentations, trainings, and providing information referral Help Line. 3 La Alianza Hispana Program and Service Description Boston Healthy Start Initiative’s goal is to reduce the infant mortality rate in Boston. BHSI case managers provide services to pregnant women. The focus is helping mother obtain services, offering emotional support, and providing information on how to care for themselves & their children. Parent Mentors and Parenting Group offer support and education to parents while connecting them to community resources. The parent mentors also provide advocacy services. The Parenting Group fosters effective parenting and self-care skills. Lessons are designed to build self-awareness, to reduce stress, and to increase levels of empathy and self esteem. Elder and Adult Day Programs The department provides culturally appropriate daily care for the elderly and other adults in need of services, and related supports for their families. We provide a vibrant hub where Latinos connect with each other, engage in healthy lifestyle activities, and participate in civic and community life. The department delivers bilingual services focused on preventative medicine, medical monitoring, therapeutic services, and social / recreational activities for individuals who are at least 40 years of age. Our goal is to maximize and/or sustain participant’s cognitive abilities and overall independence and productivity. Senior Art Therapy uses arts and crafts activities to help participants to resolve issues as well as develop and manage their behaviors and feeling, reduce stress and improve self –esteem, reduce depression and awareness. Senior Social and Recreation program provides companionship, networking with other Latino seniors, individual and group counseling The multi-faceted program includes arts, crafting, music and sing a- long, reading and discussion groups, card and table games, sharing stories, bingo, computers, EOSL classes, special parties, and exercises. Nutritious meals, translation/interpretations and case management and referral services are part of the offerings. 4 La Alianza Hispana Program and Service Description Education/Workforce Development In partnership with business, education, community development, government, philanthropy leaders, and community residents and workers we are pursuing an initiative to strengthen the Latino community while transforming local economies through the development and implementation of comprehensive and innovative workforce and education strategies. The major thrust of our initiative is comprised of linkages between lifelong learning, workforce development, access to and expansion of critical resources, and multiple service delivery models. Providing English language learning is a central operating focus on the department, but what is critical is connecting these skills to others needed for successful work, family and community life. ESOL Workplace Home Health Care Program La Alianza Hispana is the educational partner of home health care aide trainees and employees from Guardian HealthCare and The Caribbean Foundation. This contextualized ESOL curriculum integrates the terminology and context of home health aide activities with the language acquisition to improve patient and provider communication and customer service. It adds to the employers’ benefit as these employees and trainees become bilingual and expand the level of service rendered to the home bound patient customers in need of this support. 5 La Alianza Hispana Program and Service Description
