Thank you! ohiohistory.org 2 OHIO HISTORY CONNECTION Field Trip Philosophy The Ohio History Connection’s commitment to education benefits thousands of children and provides lifelong learning opportunities for all ages. As caretaker of our state’s heritage we see field trips as a way to provide hands-on, minds-on experiences. PREPARE YOUR STUDENTS Share your field trip itinerary with your students. Students who are prepared for the day when they arrive at the museum are more likely to engage with programming and with the exhibits, and have a memorable experience. Tell students what time they are doing a program and what time they are having lunch. This way everyone will be on time and able to keep to the schedule. Let students know if they are allowed to visit the Ohio History Store with the chaperones, and let them know how much time they will have to shop. PREPARE YOUR CHAPERONES Chaperones should also be prepared with information before arriving at the Ohio History Center. This should include the schedule, times and educational expectations. This is important as many times during a field trip the chaperones are facilitating the educational experience of the students. We encourage you to have your chaperones and students watch the Field Trip Orientation Video found at youtu.be/gWYy1l5uGD0 to help orient them to what will be happening during their visit. We’ve also included a ready-to-print Chaperone Information Page (see page 10). ENCOURAGE CONVERSATION AND QUESTIONING Chaperones should be actively engaged in creating an environment of learning during their time with students in the museum. We want students to explore and to ask questions about the objects and the history they are seeing in the museum. Chaperones shouldn’t be afraid to offer up questions for the students to think about, such as “Why do you think that is in the museum?” or “What is that?” Chaperones don’t need to be historians to provide a meaningful experience for the students. If students ask a question they don’t know the answer to, our staff will be able to provide the answer. GUIDING STUDENTS THROUGH THE OHIO HISTORY CENTER The Ohio History Center has a Museum Quest that our Scheduling Coordinator can send you that will offer them guidance throughout. Teachers are also encouraged to visit the museum prior to their field trip to get a lay of the land and see what the students will be experiencing when here on their field trip. Many teachers also take this time to create a scavenger hunt or worksheet that specifically calls out objects in the museum that directly relates to what students have learned recently in the classroom. Ask the scheduling coordinator for a Teacher Planning Ticket to help orient you to the exhibits at the Ohio History Center. BRING A FIELD TRIP BACK TO YOUR CLASSROOM Interested in professional development or in-school programming? Check out Outreach opportunities like the History-to-Go Van, Museum in a Box, Distance Learning and professional development workshops from the Creative Learning Factory. Look over the confirmation that the Scheduling Coordinator emailed to you, and make sure everything is correct. Please make sure to calculate travel time before leaving school. If your group arrives late you may miss part of your program or may have to join a program already in progress. 2. I f any corrections are needed please call 614.297.2663 or send an email to [email protected] as soon as possible. 3. Make sure to confirm your transportation arrangements. Is the bus booked? Do parent chaperones know where they are going? Talk with bus drivers about travel times and make sure they are aware of arrival procedures. If you are delayed on the day of your field trip please call 614.297.2641 to inform the front desk staff. 4. G o over behavior expectations with students (see page 6). These can also be found on the Chaperone Information Page (see page 10). 5. Secure and prepare chaperones for the field trip. Don’t forget to share the Chaperone Information Page with them. 6. We ask that groups have at least one chaperone for every 10 students. ohiohistory.org 4 OHIO HISTORY CONNECTION Arrival Information The first thing you should do after arriving at the Ohio History Center is check in at the front desk and pay admission for your group. PROCEDURES LUNCH PROCEDURES 1. When you arrive please have the bus pull up to the lower level entrance located by the three flag poles. We do not have a café on site at the Ohio History Center. 2. Everyone, except for the head teacher, should stay on the bus. A member of our staff will hop on the bus to give everyone an orientation. During busy times of year, you may have to wait a few minutes while other schools receive their orientation. 3. W hile orientation is happening, the head teacher should go inside to check in and pay admission for your group. 4. If arriving by car or van please park in our lot and proceed to the lower level doors. Once you’ve checked in at the front desk, our staff will take you into the museum for a short orientation. 5. We accept cash, check, credit card or purchase order. If paying with cash we ask that you have it organized and ready to be counted by our front desk staff. 6. Please instruct the bus drivers to park the buses in the outermost area of our parking lot. There are tables and chairs located on the second floor Plaza Level that are used for group lunches. Please make sure to schedule a lunch time in the Plaza area when you make your field trip reservation. This ensures there will be room for your group. When your group comes inside the museum please bring your lunches with you. There will be totes with your school name on them. Place lunches in those totes. Our staff will transport your lunches up to the Plaza Level lunch area. You must stick to your scheduled lunch time. Other groups may be eating at the same time as you, so please be respectful of everyone. Please place all trash into the receptacles and clean up after yourselves as best you can. Food and drink should be kept on the Plaza Level. ohiohistory.org 5 OHIO HISTORY CONNECTION Behavior Expectations PLEASE SHARE THESE WITH YOUR GROUP BEFORE VISITING. WHILE IN 1950S: BUILDING THE AMERICAN DREAM Students must stay with their chaperones at all times. There should be at least one adult for every 10 students. Due to fire code, we need to regulate the flow of visitors through the Lustron house in the 1950s: Building the American Dream exhibit. The Fire Safety Code mandates the house hold no more than 22 visitors at a time. Therefore, each school should be prepared to visit the Lustron house in groups no larger than 22 at a time. We ask that once a group has visited the house that they allow other groups the chance to visit. Each group of students must be with an adult chaperone while in the Lustron house. Please do not run when you are in the building. We ask that you treat the museum with respect. Help us avoid damage to the museum by encouraging students to talk, touch and question, but not climb, throw or be destructive. Other things to remember: • This is a house that you should treat with the same respect you do your own. • Students must be with their chaperones at all times while in the house. • During busy times of year, groups will only be allowed to go through the house one time to accommodate the large number of visitors. History always has room to question and discover, and we believe that the most successful learning environments are open, playful and engaging. ohiohistory.org 6 OHIO HISTORY CONNECTION Helpful Information ORIENTATION VIDEO SHOPPING IN THE OHIO HISTORY STORE We have created an orientation video that will go over lots of information to help your field trip experience at the Ohio History Center go as smoothly as possible. Please share this link with all teachers and chaperones coming on the field trip. youtu.be/gWYy1l5uGD0 The Ohio History Store, located on the lower level behind the front desk, will be open during your visit. Students should be respectful of the merchandise and of other customers that may be shopping. If anyone has questions about items in the store our front desk staff will be more than happy to answer them for you. ASSIGNING STUDENT GROUPS Before you arrive, make sure to assign students to each chaperone who will be coming on your field trip. All students should know which chaperone they are to stay with and all chaperones should know which students they are responsible for. OHIO VILLAGE Please note that during the school year Ohio Village is only accessible to school groups participating in a program. If planning to visit the store with your students, we ask that they visit the store in small groups and always have an adult present with them. There should be at least one adult for every ten students. If students prove disruptive while in the store, the Ohio History Center reserves the right to ask them to leave. Teachers have found it very successful to divide students into groups ahead of time for shopping, and to regulate the number of their students in the store at one time. TEACHER AND CHAPERONE BADGES During busy times of year, all teachers and chaperones will be given badges that say ‘Teacher’ or ‘Chaperone.’ EMERGENCY PROCEDURES • We want to make sure every emergency situation is handled appropriately and efficiently. In case of an emergency please notify an Ohio History Connection staff person immediately. • In the event of an emergency, staff will direct teachers and chaperones to the nearest exit or safe location. • When on a field trip, everyone has a role in keeping students safe. Teachers and chaperones are our partners in making sure things happen quickly and safely. We need to be able to count on teachers and chaperones to listen and help move students to safety if an emergency should arrive. ohiohistory.org 7 OHIO HISTORY CONNECTION Programs in Ohio Village If your class is participating in a program in Ohio Village, here are some helpful hints for everyone to remember: WHAT IS OHIO VILLAGE? The mission of Ohio Village is to engage the senses through interaction with history. Our goal is to share stories and connect communities, fostering an exchange of experiences that are personal and powerful. Ohio Village includes 18 buildings representing a typical small Ohio town from the 19th century, which includes a general store, hotel, toy shop, farm house, a doctor’s home, school house and many more. The village comes to life with interpreters who open their shops and homes to guests, allowing you to get face to face with history, and explore the past in a whole new way. DRESS FOR THE WEATHER When in Ohio Village most portions of the program take place inside the buildings, but some activities are outside and you will have to move from building to building. Keeping this in mind, we ask everyone to dress for the weather. COME RAIN OR SHINE Programs in Ohio Village go on rain or shine. Ohio Village programs will only be canceled if there is lightning or other severe weather. Please note that during the school year Ohio Village is only accessible to school groups participating in a program. Questions?
