Opportunities to Serve at
First Lutheran Community
Are you looking for a way to give
back to your church community?
While we have a Pastor and a
Parrish Assistant, it takes many
people to fill the needs of a vibrant
Worship Opportunities:
There are many opportunities to serve in
worship at FLC, most involve a commitment
to be at the 8:15 am or 10:30 am service on a
specific Sunday. Some opportunities are every
Sunday for one month a year. There are always
people willing to substitute if you need to
reschedule.

• Liturgical Assistant
• Children’s Sermon
• Lector
• Acolyte
• Greeter/Usher – one Sunday a month a year
• Altar Guild Member – one month a year
• Serve Communion at worship
• Home Communion distribution and visit shut-ins –
once a month at a mutually agreed time
Education Opportunities:
What could be more gratifying than serving in Christian Education?
Educational service requires a commitment to volunteer on a regular
basis, usually weekly. For Sunday School Teachers, this is typically
September to May, but can be a shorter period. Sunday School is at
9:15 am to 10:15 am.

Music Opportunities:
We are a musical congregation. We love
music. If you have talent and want to share it,
please contact Nick Brown, Director of Music.
• Chancel Choir Member – Wednesday
night practice, sing at 10:30 service and
as planned
• Hand Bell Choir Member – Wednesday
night practice, play at 10:30 service and
as planned
• Soloist – vocal or instrument coordinate

Service Opportunities:
Support volunteers are an essential part of our church family.
Committees usually meet once a month.
• Nursery Assistant – usually during worship or adult study groups;
coordinate with Dudley Hogue and Bethany Hohly
• Count Offerings – usually after 10:30 service for one month;

Fellowship Opportunities:
Not all of our activities are altruistic. Some are
just an opportunity to get together with our
friends from First Lutheran, either at church
or at people’s homes. These are sometimes
scheduled and planned through the church,
other times they are activities planned by
members, for example:
• Thanksgiving Dinner
• Easter Breakfast and Egg Hunt
• KU Trivia Night
• Youth Game Night
• Worship and Music Committee – Rick Huyett, Chair
• Softball Team
• Social Outreach – John Scheuch, Chair
• Book Club
• Marketing Committee – Anne Wiedenkeller and Danielle Hohly,
Co-chairs
• Smorgasbord
Every year, we have special events where we need volunteer
assistance. These frequently involve the youth, but sometimes we
let the adults in on the fun! It may include setting up for a
barbeque, helping with a Christmas program or planning a field
trip for youth or adults.
• Christmas Program – make costumes, assist youth, select
program
• Field Trips for youth or adults
• Assist with special decorating (Christmas, Easter, etc.)
Occasional Opportunities:
Fellowship is an essential part of our community and food is an
important part of fellowship! We can always use help to prepare and
serve snacks and meals. When we share this responsibility, it makes it
possible for everyone to enjoy our time spent together.
• Deliver a meal to a member who has been hospitalized, just had
a new baby, experienced a death in the family
• Bring treats for fellowship time following Sunday services
• Buy coffee, juice, napkins, paper plates, forks, etc. for fellowship time
• Serve refreshments at fellowship time
• Serve and/or clean up for special brunches following services
Other Opportunities:
We have several members who are no longer able to drive and do not
have family close-by to provide transportation to church. Without
assistance, they are not able to attend services or other activities.
Helping out with rides is a wonderful way to develop a new friendship!
• Provide transportation for a member to attend worship or other
activities
• Provide occasional rides to medical appointments for fellow
members
Use your professional skills for God:
You may have unique professional skills that are needed at First
Lutheran and we’d love to engage you in using them in the
following areas:
• Accounting skills
• Information technology skills
• Public relations or marketing skills
Outreach Opportunities:
One way to share your love for people is to reach outside First Lutheran,
as a group, or individually. Following are some opportunities for outreach:
• KU Campus Ministry – financial and personal efforts at the
Campus Ministry Center (Westwood House)
• Metro Lutheran Ministries – financial and food contributions
from First Lutheran, Christmas Store donations, volunteer at
Christmas Store, Food Pantry, other activities
• Children’s Memorial Lutheran Church/Northeast Hope – provide
and serve lunch quarterly
• Food Resource Bank – financial support and personal efforts at
Bucyrus farm to support sustainable growing projects in Sierra
Leone
• SAFEHOME – financial support, contributions of food, clothing,
diapers
• Blessings Abound Thrift Store – time and donations for this store
to benefit MLM
• Hollis Renewal Center – financial and personal efforts to support
the retreat center in Bonner Springs, Kansas.
