WALLISDEAN JUNIOR SCHOOL and Resourced Provision for Deaf Children and Children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs NEWSLETTER – SEPTEMBER 2016 Headteacher’s Message I am delighted to be able to write my first message as the Acting Executive Headteacher of Wallisdean Junior School. Many of you will know me from my role as Headteacher of Wallisdean Infants School. All the staff and children have made me feel very welcome and I am pleased to be joining your school community. This term I will be building on working alongside an already excellent team to ensure we are able to meet the needs of our children to achieve their full potential. As you will already know, the Governors have decided to federate Wallisdean Junior and Infant Schools, this is an exciting opportunity for the future of both schools and will be in place for 1st November 2016. We have had a very impressive start to the year with the vast majority of children arriving at school on time and looking smart in their uniforms. The children have settled well in their new classes and are already working hard on their learning with positive attitudes. This term has seen the start of swimming lessons for Year 5 and I look forward to hearing about their progress. Dahlicious Dress Up Day was enjoyed by all, children and staff dressed up as their favourite Roald Dahl characters and it was lovely to see the children’s creativity in their costumes. Year 3 and 4 are going to The Search Museum at the end of this month and I’m sure we will have positive feedback from this educational visit. Year 5 and 6 will be going to Winchester Science Centre for their educational visit at the start of October. The topic for Year 3 and 4 this half term is ‘Skull and Crossbones’, with each subject looking at aspects related to this topic. The same is to be said for the Year 5 and 6 topic ‘To Infinity and Beyond’. As parents, it is important that you feel you have a voice and that as a school we are approachable. Please feel free to contact staff with your concerns, worries or thoughts about the school, either by phone, email or in person. I believe that we will have a positive and successful future working, growing and developing together as a whole school community and that the children will love coming to a school which provides an all round educational experience in which everyone can flourish. Music Instrument Lessons For more information regarding music instrument lessons in school, please email: [email protected] or visit the Rockademy website: www.rockademy.co.uk Healthy Lunchboxes It's important to make sure the lunchbox your child takes to school provides a healthy and balanced lunch which consists of plenty of foods that contain the nutrients that children need, and fewer foods high in sugar and saturated fat. Preparing your child’s lunchbox: A balanced packed lunch should contain: starchy foods – these are bread, rice, potatoes, pasta and others protein foods – including meat, fish, eggs, beans and others a dairy item – this could be cheese or a yoghurt vegetables or salad and a portion of fruit Starchy foods are a good source of energy and should make up a third of the lunchbox. Don't let things get boring, instead of sandwiches, give kids bagels, pitta bread, wraps and baguettes. Use brown, wholemeal or seeded bread, not white bread. Low fat snacks for kids: Children often like food they can eat with their fingers, so chop up raw veggies such as carrots or peppers and give them hummus or cottage cheese to dip the veggies in. Breadsticks and wholemeal crackers are great finger foods that can be spread with low fat soft cheese or eaten with reduced fat cheddar and pickles. Replace chocolate bars and cakes with fresh fruit. Vary the fruit each day and get them to try new things, such as kiwi or melon. You could also make up a tasty fruit salad. Be inventive and encourage your children when they try something new. It may take a while for your children to get used to a healthier lunchbox. Keep trying, it will be worth it for their health. For lots of interesting healthy lunchbox ideas, please visit the NHS Change4Life website: nhs.uk/change4life/Pages/healthy-lunchbox-picnic Money Matters When sending money to school, please enclose money in an envelope, seal it and write details on the envelope (name, class, amount and its purpose). All money should be handed to your child's class teacher or to the school office in an envelope to avoid any problems. The school office is generally very busy first thing in the morning. Unfortunately, envelopes and change cannot be given out at this time (if you have two children in the school, money can be sent in the same envelope). Pupil Premium The Government gives extra funding to the school for Pupil Premium children. These are children who are entitled to free school meals or have a parent serving in the Armed Forces (or has served in the last six years). If your circumstances have recently changed or you feel your child now meets this criteria, please contact the school office with your updated information. All information will be handled in the strictest of confidences. Collecting Children As part of our curriculum, the children use outside areas within the school site until the end of the school day, we can not therefore allow access to the school site before 3.10pm. Please could we remind you that appropriate behaviour is expected by all visitors to our school at all times. Dahlicious Dress Up Day Marvellous children and staff dressed up for Dahlicious Day on Tuesday 13th September. The school was filled with amazing characters and it was lovely to see the children embracing the opportunity to dress up for charity. A huge thank you to all those who contributed to the Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity, we are proud to announce that we raised £136.50. Well done to our wonderful winners of the book tokens, your costumes were incredibly creative! Year 3—Archie Year 4—Alex Year 5—Bradley Year 6—Dylan Manatees—Paulie Taekwondo Champion Huge congratulations to Leona for defending her title and winning another gold medal at the British National Taekwondo Championships. The photos show Leona in action at the competition and proudly holding her gold medal with Rio Olympic Silver medallist, Lutalo Muhammad. Leona trains four times a week with British Taekwondo South, a GB Talent Club based in Southampton. On 25th September, Leona took part in the British National Championships, competing in the -34kg advanced weight category. The event was hosted at the Copper Box Arena, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London. Leona is the 2015 reigning Advanced National Champion and was eager to defend her title, she therefore needed to win three fights throughout the day. In WTF Olympic style Taekwondo, athletes score one point to the body or three points to the head. Punches are allowed, but only to the body. Each fight consists of three rounds, lasting two minutes each round. Leona’s Results: 1st Fight (Quarter-final): Leona won by a 12 point gap and the match was stopped. 2nd Fight (Semi-final): Leona's opponent threw in the towel and did not want to continue. 3rd Fight (Final): Leona won 4-2. She had everyone out of their seats during her last round as it was extremely close. She showed true fighting spirit as despite injuring her foot early in the final round, she just kept on going. Jewellery The only jewellery pupils are permitted in school is a watch and a small discrete pair of stud earrings. Friendship bands are not permitted. Jewellery must be removed for PE. If earrings need to stay in for PE, please provide earring tape to cover the earrings.
