All about Act II Act II is not a club; it’s a state of mind for emptynesters. Act II is a pathway to stretching your mind, serving others, and sharing good times while growing spiritually. It’s about thriving throughout this marvelous stage of life that is full to the brim with opportunities for fun and friendship, potential for growth, and countless ways to make a difference! Our Mission To join together in fellowship to study and learn, serve our church and the community, and support and uphold one another. Whether we uniquely tailor something for our group, sponsor a program for all ages, or participate as a unit in a larger community activity, we live out our mission in meaningful and life-affirming ways. Fellowship Central Florida offers countless opportunities for group activities, and we are happy to explore any recommendation brought to our attention. Act II events, sponsorships, and activities are limited only by the interests and suggestions of those involved! We encourage fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and expressions of interest. The list below represents just a few activities we’ve participated in to date: • • • • • • • • • Out-of-town bus trip Cooking class Courthouse tour Day trips Dinner and theatre nights Florida Southern College tour Sunday lunches after worship Movie nights Museum hops • • • • • • • • • Super Bowl parties Picnics Retreat River boat tour Spring training baseball games Symphony UCF Medical Center tour Volunteer teams Wycliffe Bible translators tour Mind-Expanding Studies Act II is intentional about stimulating intellectual growth through classes, such as “Family History and Legacy.” The group also has studied such books as Wild Goose Chase, Woman 2 Woman, The Gift of Years, Living and Dying with Purpose and Grace, Soul Unfinished, and Discernment: The Art of Choosing Well. Thought-Provoking Guest Speakers Act II sponsors FUMCWP’s Speakers Series, which covers a broad range of topics presented by knowledgeable authorities. Speakers have included: John Crossman, on Christians in the work place; Dr. Ken Hanson, author and expert on the Dead Sea Scrolls; Greg Dawson, who has written several books on the Holocaust; Rollins College President Dr. Lewis Duncan; Jodi Tassos, leader of the Young at Heart singing group; Chief Judge Belvin Perry on what’s new in the judicial system; and Beth Kassab, whose topic was “Inside the Orlando Sentinel.” Abundant Living Series Act II believes that now is the time to embrace the next stage of life, to tap into passions previously delegated to the sidelines, and to experience the freedom and joy that come from living abundantly. Act II sponsors the “Abundant Living Series” to engage and inspire attendees of all ages to live life more abundantly. We use abundant living to represent a vital, active, and fulfilling stage of life that can be the very best of all! Wellness Initiative Act II in collaboration with the Caring Ministry offers a church wide Wellness Initiative which features “Compelling conversations about living a balanced and healthy lifestyle”. Topics are related to wellness on all levels: physical, emotional, spiritual, and social relationships. These programs are of great interest for any age group, but especially Boomers and the Act II group. Watch for the announced events which are offered about six times a year. Outreach & Community Service In Act II, we understand the legacy we are building through our belief that hearts and hands are made to serve and our deep commitment to others— especially those in need. Because we have more time to devote to service at this point in our lives, we are the first to step forward and say, “Pick me!” There are countless ways that Act II members can (and do) give back by volunteering for FUMCWP outreach efforts and community service projects. From serving pizza to patients at the Veteran’s Hospital, to volunteering at a local food bank, to sponsoring “Sharing Christmas” with families in the South Street community, Act II members heed the call to serve. We are always seeking community service opportunities and are open to ideas from all. Below are a few of the many volunteer initiatives to which many of our Act II folks have devoted numerous hours of service: • Sharing Christmas (yearly) • Tuskawilla UMC Food Bank (monthly) • South Street Ministry • Bicycle Blessings* • Interfaith Hospitality Network* • Jobs Partnership* *Through FUMCWP’s Local Outreach Ministry. Act II Singles Although there are many single participants in Act II, there has been a growing interest in activities that are specifically designed with the single person in mind. For this reason, FUMCWP has created Act II Singles. Still in its infancy, this group hopes to build a community group of singles who are 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s who seek a safe environment for friendly and supportive camaraderie. . . . growing, engaging, A Unique Stage of Life Each of us has countless choices to consider. and living abundantly Pursuing new interests, making new friends, getting involved in volunteerism, challenging throughout the next stage ourselves with study and taking on new of life causes all contribute to living a productive and meaningful life. At this stage of life, you can share yourself more freely, help others more readily, and use your talents, skills, and gifts more aptly. Although being and staying physically healthy, of course, has much to do with one’s happiness and level of activity, But Will I Fit in? There’s a place for you in Act II, no matter what. Whether you are married or single, active or slower-paced, there’s a place for you in Act II. Whether you have been very involved with a group in the church, have sort of lost touch, or are new to our faith community, you will fit in here. The Good News about Growing Older There are many great things about being over 55! If you have children, chances are they have outgrown their need for constant attention. They may even be grown with families of their own. If you are in the work force, it’s likely that you’ve met many, if not understanding and embracing the mind/ body/spirit connection is integral to wholeness. And a positive attitude and healthy outlook are the foundation for the phase of life that we at FUMCWP refer to as Act II.
