NTU Sports Facilities TELECOM CO. Overview NTU Sport Facilities are an important part of a student’s life. Students can gain many advantages from those facilities. Health is one of the most important things for students. Everybody knows that we must be healthy in order to be able to attend classes, prepare for midterm or final exams and doing regular exercise is an excellent way for finding a balance between study and other life activities. Our Goal One of the major goals of this document is to introduce you the various kinds of sports you can do in NTU. Present and promote the NTU Sports Facilities. Stimulate students to exercise regularly. Help NTU Sports Facilities to improve their service based on the gathered statistical data. Introduction to the NTU Sports Facilities National Taiwan University is the oldest university in Taipei with many outdoor and indoor sports facilities. The outdoor facilities include a four-hundred meter track and field, eight hard tennis courts, two clay courts, two basketball courts, seven volleyball courts, one baseball field, one softball field, one golf course, physical fitness practice field, two basketball courts and two volleyball courts in the Earthquake Center, and a fifty meter swimming pool. Indoor facilities after 2002 divide into old gym and new gym. On February 2002, with a cost of NT$1.1 billion, NTU sport center is officially opened. This new gyms became the biggest changes in NTU sport facilities, and students call it the new sport building (新體). It was NTU’s desire to provide not only students but also the public to spend enough time exercising with recreational facilities in National Taiwan University. This new facilities include the basement 25meter swimming pool (NT$1,000 to NT$2,500 per half year), weight training room (NT$750 to NT$1,250 per half year) and table tennis room (NT$300 to NT$3,000 per half year). There is a multi-purpose sports area on the first floor (NT$48,000 to NT$128,000/day depending on type and date of use). Classrooms and administrative offices are located on the second floor. The main stadium can seat up to 5,500 people and also boasts a 180-meter indoor running track and a giant video screen. This stadium can be rented for international conferences, sporting events and performances (NT$160,000 to NT$280,000 per day, depending on type and date of use). "He who has health, has hope; and he who has hope, has everything." – Thomas Carlyle 1st floor of old sport building. Those people are practicing basketball in the physical education class. The Old Sports Building Inside the old sport building are basketball and badminton fields. “Commitment to the team - there is no such thing as inbetween, you are either in our out”. – Pat Riley 2nd floor of the old sport building. Those people are dancing in front of the mirror. The baseball field where according to the result of our survey Taiwan’s National Sport is practiced (see page 13). Running track and sports field. Even during the night you can see students running. In the middle of the sports field are several soccer fields. “Mental attitude is more important than mental capacity.” – Walter Dill Scott One of several outdoor Basketball courts. The basketball courts are not only used by students, sometimes we can even see old people playing basketball. Also you can often see students playing basketball after 22:00 o’clock without any lights. 71% of the students would prefer to have light after 22:00 o’clock (see page 11). Dancing Room NTU’s new sport center Workout in the Gym When you enter new Sports Center you will see a shop selling sportswear. Especially convenient when you have a swimming class and you are in need of a swimming cap. “What counts in sports is not the victory, but the magnificence of the struggle.” – Joe Paterno The Indoor Swimming Pool. Why is Swimming So Good? Swimming works your whole body, improving cardiovascular conditioning, muscle strength, endurance, posture, and flexibility all at the same time. Did you know that many swimmers find an in-direct benefit from swimming? They develop life skills such as sportsmanship, time-management, self-discipline, goal-setting, and an increased sense of selfworth through their participation in the sport? Swimmers seem to do better in school, in general terms, than non-swimmers as a group. There are other psychological benefits to swimming. Relax and swim with a very low effort. Let your mind wander, focusing on nothing but the rhythm of your stroke. This form of meditation can help you gain a feeling of well-being, leaving your water session refreshed and ready to go on with the rest of your day. “Without self-discipline, success is impossible, period.” – Lou Holtz There are several tennis courts available. Registration is required. Badminton seems to be the most popular sport in NTU (see page 9). Squash seems to be less popular. Nobody mentioned it as their preferred sport. “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.” – Aristotle The Ping Pong court must be reserved in advance and maybe Ping Pong just is not so popular in Taiwan as assumed. 3 times we visited the Ping Pong court and the light was switched off. Popularity among students: 5% (see page 9). Regular Exercise Benefits Stress Reduction Enhanced mood Improved memory Increased brain flood flow Improved self-confidence Improved overall health Happy B dy Happy Mind TELECOM CO. Let’s face it, students have hectic schedules. Students have to balance between lots of homework, extracurricular activities, social interactions and sometimes even part time jobs and then exercising is often left out because it seems that there is no time for it. Scientists have conducted studies devoted toward monitoring weight gain among freshmen college students, concluding that a majority of the students gained a few extra pounds by the end of their sophomore year. There are a number of reasons for sudden weight gain in freshmen students. New acquired eating habits and lack of exercise certainly are two of the main reasons. Although trekking from class to class may seem like a workout sometimes (especially if you not have a bicycle in the NTU campus), many students do not get enough exercise to benefit their bodies. The benefits you get when you exercise regularly are a lot more than just losing or preserving your ideal weight. “A healthy mind in a healthy body.” – Juvenal Roman poet & satirist (55 AD - 127 AD) Maintaining a healthy body is the first step toward achieving a healthy mind as you strive for both academic and social success. The importance of exercise is nothing new. Thomas Jefferson (3rd president of the United States) once wrote that to be successful in academic studies, a person should "give about two of them [that's hours dear students], every day, to exercise; for health must not be sacrificed to learning. A strong body makes the mind strong." It turns out Jefferson was on to something. A multi-year study by researchers at Tufts University found that students who said they exercised at least 3 days a week were more likely to report a better state of physical health and greater happiness than those who didn't exercise. This (and other evidence) suggests that the real benefits of exercise may not come right after a workout but from a longer commitment to regular activity. How Can I Get Moving? NTU offers lots of different ways to exercise. If you haven’t tried yet, why not take advantage of the facilities and try something new? In our sectionXY we introduce most of the sports activities you can perform in NTU. Maybe you find a sport with makes a lot of fun. And Fun is of utter importance; because the more you enjoy it, the more likely you are to do it regularly. So find activities you like and make them a part of your routine. If you prefer individual sports you might work out at the gym. The gym can be a great place to work off stress from the pressures of school and if you want to catch two flies with one stroke you can even read a textbook while riding a bicycle. If you prefer team sports (according to our survey) you can join a baseball, basketball, baseball, soccer or another sports club. One of the great things about college life is that if your friends don’t share your sports interests you can usually meet others players easily. Statistics We asked 50 students to fill out a questionary. Our goal was to find out more about the sport interests of NTU students. The majority of the students like sports, almost all believe regular exercise is good for one’s health and that a healthy mind lives in a healthy body. More than 59% believe that Baseball is the National Sport of Taiwan (see page 13). Can the Martial Arts room (also known as the dancing hall) be rent for a couple of hours for a group of students who want to practice together? Yes, but a special registration is required. The registration consists of a written proposal which states how and for what you want to use the room and must include at least 4 copies of student cards. The prices for the dancing hall are: Questions & Answers We asked several questions to the responsible person in charge of the NTU Sports Coordination Center.
