BOCCE NEWS
Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday at 1pm we have a
regular bocce competition for our members. This is a wonderful
way of getting regular exercise plus a social get together for
these members who are mostly retired.
As well as this we hold several championships for all of our
members plus two championships a year where we invite
all the other bocce clubs. So far we have held our Singles
competition with Rocco Mancini taking out first place and
Ennio Alfonsi runner up.
We have also held our Circle competition with Mario Brancato
and Lorrie Vittori sharing first place and John Zappavigna
coming third.
In July we held our Xmas in July Bocce competition. This was
a wonderful day with fifty players taking part in a friendly out
of the hat completion. The team of Lorrie Vittori (LCC) Louis
Magajna (Triglav) and Caterina Morsella (Dural) took out first
place.
Invitations have been sent out to all clubs inviting them to take
part in our annual Presidents Cup which will be held on the first
of November. Teams of four either men or women will compete
with up to eighty players taking part.
We have at present eight teams of pairs taking part in the NSW
Bocce Federation.
We shall be hosting one of these competitions on our courts
early next year. Teams from Marconi, Dural, King Tomislav, Club
Italia and LCC will be competing.
Plus we are hoping to host the prestigious National Seniors
Bocce competition for both men and women on our courts
in June next year. Their will be teams from each State plus
regionals from both Victoria, Queensland and South Australia.
This is a fantastic opportunity to see the Australian champions

compete and show off their skills. As well as the traditional
games there are precision throwing and bowl throw where the
players runs the length of the court and throw the bowl.
This competition commences on the Friday with an Opening
Ceremony in the evening. Play continues Saturday and Sunday
with finals on Monday. Monday evening is a presentation dinner.
We are very proud to announce that at this present time we
have two players Stefano Chiandotto and Daniel Samsa
representing Australia at the World Bocce mens competition
taking place in Rijecka Croatia. This is a fantastic achievement.
We are also looking forward to having a bocce night with
our friends from the Over 50’s now that the days are getting
warmer. This is always a very enjoyable evening.
Every second Friday of the month the Macarthur Special
Olympians train on our courts. Remo DiGiovanni does a
wonderful job of ensuring the courts are marked out for them
plus opening and closing the courts on the nights.
In July they held their Regional Bocce competition on our
courts with up to one hundred people attending. Eight of our
members helped out with refereeing on the day. Our president
Lucky Legato assisted in handing out certificates on the day. It
is always a pleasure to help out on these occasions the players
and parents are always happy and appreciative. The players
skills are amazing and some of our Macarthur group have been
selected at State, National and World level.
We are always looking for new players at all levels. So please
come along and join us.

SEPTEMBER 2015
First of all we would like to congratulate every player and
Official in our club on the way they conducted themselves this
season. We are very proud of each and every one of them.
After a shaky start to the season and with 20 teams to get
kitted out and onto the footy fields we ended up having a very
successful year. Out of the 20 teams, 4 of them, our 6’s and 7’s
were noncompetitive. From our remaining 16 teams, 12 of them
made the Semi Finals with 6 eventually playing in their Grand
Finals. We had 4 runners up and 2 premiers being our 14 Div 2
and 15 Div 1.
During the year we held 2 fundraising events. A disco for the
players and we participated in the Harvey Norman Monster
Raffle. We raised enough funds from these events to be able to
give our players a presentation day with lots of rides along with
a gift for each player. We also held 4 weekends of trails at the
beginning of the season which very successful.
This year (September) we had 25 boys trial for Harold
Matthews Cup and 10 trial for SG Ball. We eagerly await the
results and wish them all good luck.

PIPE BAND
Hello from the LCC Southern Cross Pipes and Drums.
During the past few months, the band has been involved in
several military commemorations.
This began with us continuing our tradition by playing for the
pre Anzac Day march held by the Bankstown RSL, which was
held on the Sunday prior to Anzac Day.
On the evening of 24th April, we played at the prestigious
Camp Gallipoli. The poor weather nearly saw it being
cancelled, however it was moved from Centennial Park to
the Entertainment Quarter at Moore Park. We had to play 3
times across the evening. Two performances were just the
band playing, and for one set we marched on, accompanying a
group of young people who were carrying flags from different
countries that were involved in the Gallipoli campaign. Each
set was performed in the Hordern Pavilion, which had been
transformed into a live studio. The broadcast was then shown
on a number of large screens around the venue. It was an
amazing event and a tribute to all soldiers both past and
present.
A number of our players played at the Dawn Service on ANZAC
Day for Bass Hill RSL followed by the whole band playing at the
ANZAC Day march in the city. Once again it was a great turnout
for the band and also the huge crowds for the march through
the city. For those who may not know, following the main
ANZAC march, all of the pipe bands form a “massed band”
display, the Scottish Act of Remembrance, marching from Town
Hall to Martin Place.
are excited to pursue our big dreams again, with new tunes
and arrangements sure to impress the judges and crowds
in Scotland. We travelled and competed in 2006 with great
success for our first World Championships, and we are very
keen to do it again and bring back even better results! We will
be rehearsing very hard over the coming months, getting into
optimal shape to make our country proud! We will also be
fundraising as much as we can to make things easier financially,
so please, when you see us around, get behind us and help us
on our way! Thank you!
In our band, we have always prided ourselves on our
appearance, with very consistent and smart looking uniforms,
so with this in mind, we have recently updated the look of our
uniform. We now have a light blue long sleeved shirt, black
socks and other black and silver details. It feels great to step
out looking so professional and we have received very pleasing
feedback on our new and fresh appearance.
If you or anyone you know plays the bagpipes or drums and is
looking to join a band, or maybe you are interested in learning
a new instrument, please contact us or come and visit us,
following the details below.
We rehearse every Wednesday night from 7.30pm – 9.00pm in
the Women’s Gym area at the Sports Complex.
Pipe Major, Glen Muller on 0433 283 704
Secretary, Heather Ruys on [email protected]
Additionally, based on our performance in the Anzac Day
march, we were contacted by the organisers of the Reserve
Forces Day Parade. This was held on the 5th July as a
commemoration to our Reserve Forces, particularly those in
past conflicts. It involved a march in the city and a ceremony
to present medallions to the families of Gallipoli descendants.
The band played a large role on the day, as not only did we
participate in the main parade, we were also the band for the
Gallipoli descendants’ ceremony and march.
As 2015 represented the 100th Anniversary of ANZAC, each of
the related events were very moving for us and we considered
it a privilege to be involved in each of them; honouring those
who have bravely gone before, securing our country’s freedom.
As Spring has arrived, so has the beginning of our competition
season. This will begin with a contest on Sunday 4th October
at Knox Grammar School, Wahroonga, and then the Illawarra
contest two weeks later, on Sunday 18th October. We are
feeling hopeful and positive about these contests, as we will be
performing some new tunes and arrangements within our sets.
Wish us luck!!
We have some very exciting news as well! After numerous
discussions, we have decided to venture overseas again, for
the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, in 2017. We

SEASON REPORT FROM
AROUND THE GROUNDS
Congratulations to our B Grade side who won their Grand
Final earlier this year after finishing runner’s up in last year’s
C Grade competition. The following is a copy of the Grand
Final scorecard from the MyCricket website (www.lcccricket.
com.au).
The grand final was played on the weekend of 21/22 March
2015 which was quite overcast, particularly on Sunday, with
intermittent showers and some morning rain that looked like
spoiling the occasion. Fortunately, the ground was in great
condition, the rain held off and no loss of overs or time came
into the equation. Panania East Hills RSL won the toss and
put us into bat. We then proceeded to bat the entire day
and after 68 overs were 8 for 249. A good total that was
going to be hard to chase down, particularly with the young
bowling talent we have.

DAY 1
DAY 2
We started off cautiously against some good full pitched
bowling and at 3-47 were thinking ‘oh not again’, but thanks to a
terrific 4th wicket partnership of 91 between Cameron Bournes
and Peter Pigadas, they steadied the ship. Unfortunately,
Cameron and then Peter were both lost in fairly quick
succession. However, this then brought Umar Rashid and our
captain Luke Harrison to the crease, where they started to
rebuild and put on a solid 5th wicket partnership of 53, thereby
getting us closer to that mental barrier of 200 runs. Well
supported by the remaining batsman, Luke went on to score a
captains knock of 62 n.o and our eventual total of 8-249 was
reached.
It was our bowlers and the fielding that would now be tested.
Did we have enough runs on the board and would the weather
come into it and spoil the party? Well the rain stayed away,
so it was down to us. 250 runs to win was a good target to
defend, but when you’re up against quality opposition and the
adrenalin of a grand final match, anything can happen. When
chasing down 250 runs, you need to be positive and a little
aggressive to get a good start. Our first scalp was not to come
until 44 runs were on the board. This proved to be their biggest
partnership for the rest of the day. It was the pace and spin
combination of the Stoneham brothers, Reece (U18) and Kye
(U15) respectively, that showed the way, taking 3 wickets each.

TO ‘MY TEAM’, CONGRATULATIONS BOYS .
. . LOOKING FOR A BACK-TO-BACK RESULT
THIS SEASON
As with the batting, our captain Luke Harrison also showed the
way with the ball, snagging 2 important wickets. Frustratingly,
PEHRSL slowly crept towards 200, but fell well short of 250.
All Out for 10-182.
Finally, as the Team Scorer for the B Grade side, even though
I am not one of the on-field players, the entire squad has
always welcomed and treated myself as an integral part of
the team. This has enabled me to become closer and to enjoy
my son’s achievements and at the same time enjoy the bond
that everyone has developed during the past few years. I too
get to experience the pain of a loss, but also get to experience
the adulation and immense satisfaction of finally winning a
premiership. I strongly encourage those parents or family
members out there, who may have been thinking of becoming
a coach, manager or even scorer, to get involved . . . it’s fun and
can be very satisfying.
To ‘My Team’, Congratulations boys . . . looking for a back-toback result this season.
VOLUNTEERS / SUPPORTERS
We should never forget and need to acknowledge the many
man-hours that are put in by our club and team volunteers.
Our coaches, managers and scorers all need to be applauded.
Without you, there would be no team or club, so well done to
everyone. On behalf of all parents and players, plus the Cricket
Club committee, a sincere thank you.
CRICKET CLUB COMMITTEE
Running a large and successful Cricket Club requires a great
deal of commitment and organizational work that occurs
behind the scenes. This work requires considerable effort
and personal time which is shared amongst our Cricket Club
committee members and volunteers. The following committee

season and on behalf of all players and parents, a sincere thank
you for volunteering your time.

FUNDRAISING
To run a great cricket club that offers so much to its players
and members, quite a lot of funds are required to make this
function. To a lot of people, this just happens and goes totally
unnoticed. However, a lot of work is done by the committee and
its volunteers.
As with each season, we ask that everyone within the cricket
club become involved in some capacity. All of the fund raising
work should not be left to just a few. Helping man the canteen
when your team is playing at Powell Park, ensuring you attend
the Meat Raffle when it’s your team’s allocated night, offering
to help for an hour or two at one of the weekend BBQ’s, all
contributes to the fund raising activities that we do for your
son/daughter and their team.
OUR SPONSORS
Every season the LCC Cricket Club offers the local business
community the opportunity to be part of our success and to
become a sponsor of one of our Junior and/or Senior cricket
teams.
The LCC Cricket Club would like to take this opportunity to
thank all of our much valued sponsors for their support during
the 2014/15 season. The players really appreciate your support
and wear their blue sponsored shirts with pride. We also wish
to thank once again, the Liverpool Catholic Club, Directors and
the staff.
If you are a company that would like the opportunity to
sponsor one of our Cricket Teams during the next 2015_16
season, please contact the cricket club secretary (secretary@
lcccricket.com.au) for further details.
