Regulations
The first course of International Spaghetti structure competition
Style: Heavyweight
Compiled by Arbitration and scientific Committee of the first course
of International Spaghetti structure competition of Technical and
Vocational University of Yazd
1- Contest rules:
1-1 Team members include high school students, students in all
fields from universities, colleges, governmental and nongovernmental scientific centers and companies' staff. Each
team can take part in this competition with 2 structures.
1-2 There are no limitations regarding the field and education level
of contestants.
1-3 Each team includes at least 2 people and maximum 3 people
along with a supervisor. One of the team members will be
introduced as a connector to contest committee.
1-4 Each person can just join one team and participant team should
present a signed introduction letter from their high school,
university, college or any related org.
1-5 Each college, university etc. would just win 2 ranks.
1-6 The supervisor is in charge of leading team members and
Observance of competition rules. Furthermore, each supervisor
can take supervising of more than one team.

1-8 Surrendered samples to arbitration committee for participating
in competition won't be given back.

1-9 Two team members have to take part in convention.
1-10 Complaint about each of the competition rounds including
registration, delivery of sample, judgment can be followed
provided with a written form to arbitration committee and they
will announce the result by 24 hours.
1-11 Oral complaint, irregularity and every action out of politeness
are kinds of violation and arbitration committee will vote with
enough recognition and will omit the team from this
competition, suspend from upcoming rounds and also report to
related universities, colleges and so on.
2- Definitions
2-1: knot:
The meeting point of 2 or more than 2 members which are joint by
glue.
2-2: Member:
The element between two knots.
2-3: member length:
The center to center distance between two last knots of a member.
2-4: deck:
The imaginary horizontal area between two supports of structure
which is balanced with the area of 2 supports of loading table (zero
level)
2-5: the overall height of structure:
The overall distance between the lowest and the highest point of
structure.
2-6: span of structure:
The maximum length of structure.

2-7 zero level:
Support area of loading table is supposed as zero level and in case of
putting on loading table, other elevation levels of structure would
evaluate with that.
2-8 Violation:
Lack of paying attention to any paragraphs of regulations would be
considered as a violation. The responsibility of compliance of all the
regulations is with supervisor and in case of intentional violation, the
offending team will be omitted and suspended 1 to 2 years.
Tip: diagnosis of intentional or unintentional violation is by arbitrary
team.
3- Material:
Permitted materials for making the structure include:
3-1 Spaghetti:
Spaghetti made by factories and not the hand-made one. It shouldn’t
be processed, reformed and reinforced and it should be available for
public in market.
Tip: in case of using hollow spaghetti, filling it is forbidden even with
another spaghetti.
Tip: in admission day, all teams have to present an unopened pack of
spaghetti which is going to be used in making the structure.
3-2 Glue:
Using thermal, double, fast harden, drop liquid glue and any other
kinds of glue which is available in market is permitted.

3-3 Wood:
Using different kinds of wood considering compliance of dimensions
mentioned in regulations is permitted just for making the location of
loading the structure.
3-4 Bolts:
Using various types of bolts and metal rings is permitted just for
making the location of loading the structure.
3-5 Twine and rope:
Participant team should undertake selection and type of twine.
Tip: Using any other kind of thing except the mentioned is forbidden
for making the structure.
4- Dimensions of structure:
4-1 The height of structure from zero level:
The maximum allowed height of the highest point of structure from
zero level is 1000mm.
4-2 come down part of structure from zero level:
The maximum height of the lowest point of structure from zero level
is -1000 mm.
4-3 Overall height of structure:
The maximum height of structure which contains the vertical
distance between the highest and lowest point is 1100 mm.
4-4 The length of structure span:
The minimum allowed length for structure span is 1000mm and the
maximum is 1100mm. the distance between 2 supports, edge to
edge is exactly 100cm. It is recommended that the structure length
be designed in a way that putting it on 2 supports would be insured.

4-5 Structure width:
The maximum allowed structure width -end to end- in all levels is
200mm; altering the width in different levels is permitted.
4-6 loading table supports:
Loading table has 2 same support levels in zero level the inner
distance of which is 1000mm and outer distance of these 2 supports
is 1100mm.
The width of each support is 50mm and length of them is 200mm
which is the maximum width of structure.
There's a need that conditions of come down part and other
protrusions of bridge be in a way that conditions of simple support
would be provided at 2 ends and doesn’t help the bridge stability in

supports locations. Bridges are only allowed to use vertical forces of
supports and using horizontal reactions of bridges is forbidden.

5- Member specifications:
5-1 Spaghetti section:
The shape of Spaghetti section should be filled or hollow circular
spaghetti. Using other different kinds is not permitted.
5-2 Spaghetti diameter:
There are no limitations in diameter of used spaghetti in constructing
efficiency structure.
5-3 Parallel members:
There are no limitations for parallel members next to each other.
(But dimensions of gluing along members shouldn’t be in a way that
is forbidden according to regulations)

5-4 Structure’s weight:
The maximum permissible weight of structure, wood, bolt, ring and
rope overall can’t exceed 1000gr.
6- Specifications of loading location
Loading is performed with 2 methods of wood and bolt or rope on
structure and teams are free to choose the method of loading.
In support's location, there are no limitations in number of knots.
While loading or construction in support location, no additional
material like coins, sheets of paper, plastic etc. shouldn’t be used
under knots. Thus, the participant is responsible for balance of
structure.
Loading bases of competition are balanced. Using thermal glue or
any of permitted materials is allowed for balancing the base.
6-1 Wood and bolt
6-1-1 Material of wood and bolt
Participants should undertake the selection of material and type of
wood and bolt.
6-1-2 Level of wood and bolt
The maximum level of the lowest point of wood (underside of wood)
is -100mm compared to zero level.
The maximum level of the highest point of wood (upside of wood) is
600mm compared to zero level.
6-1-3 Dimensions of wood
The maximum width of loading wood is 100mm. (the width of wood
is alongside the structure)
The maximum length of loading wood is 200mm. (the length of wood
is along the width of the structure)

The maximum thickness of loading wood is 50mm. (the thickness of
wood is along the height)
6-1-4 the location of wood
To exert regular load to structure, the loading wood should be put
exactly in the middle of length and width of structure.
6-1-5 Bolt
Loading bolt contains a bar which transfers the load to wood and
from wood to structure. This bar has a ring downside and screw and
washer upside.
Tip: the diameter of washer and bead shouldn’t exceed the area of
wood.
Tip: considering the loading machine, diameter of ring should be at
least 10mm.
6-1-6 Location of bolt
Bolt should pass a hole which is exactly in the middle of wood and
the maximum come down part of it should be 100mm.
For passing bolt through wood, a hole should be created in the
middle of wood and bolt should be placed in the wood just as the
figure shows.

6-2 Rope
6-2-1 Loading ropes can be thread, string and so on. Using any kind
of material is allowed.
6-2-2 Using elastic material is not permitted.
6-2-3 Structure's rope is a kind of cable i.e. it can just endure tensile
force. So using wood or wire is not allowed.
6-2-4 Rope should be set up in a way that through which the loading
bar with 2mm diameter passes.
6-2-5 It is better that ropes be picked from some kind of materials
which don’t tear while loading. In case of tearing the ropes, the
loading would be stopped and tearing the rope would be considered
as a whole structure failure.
6-2-6 Thread can be glued in meeting points.
6-2-7 For loading, the bridge is placed on loading machine and then a
metal bar is placed inside the rope and load cell hook will be hung
from the bar and loading system of bar and weight will join the other
side of load cell hook and then loading begins.
6-2-8 for connecting the loading rope to bridge, just one knot should
be picked in each truss page. That knot should be in the middle of
bridge length.
6-2-9 Ropes need to be connected to bridge in support level and
transfer the force streak to the center of bridge. Connecting loading
rope to a knot higher or lower than support level is not permitted.
6-2-10 in each truss page of structure, loading should be performed
in one point in the middle of the structure.
6-2-11 the ropes should be connected to bridge before the loading
and the weight of rope is also a part of structure's weight.

6-2-12 tying the loading rope to a knot higher than support level is
considered as a violation and would result in removing the structure
from competition.
7- Gluing regulations
While gluing the structure, pay attention to these items:
7-1 just knots can be glued.
7-2 coating and strengthening the element with glue is forbidden.
(Except loading place with considering permitted conditions)
7-3 Members shouldn’t be smeared with glue.
7-4 Permitted amount of glue for a member with the length of L
equals 0.2 L; i.e. 0.8 of member’s length shouldn’t be glued. For
members shorter than 5cm, up to 0.4 of length of members can be
glued. Anyway, gluing more than 2.5cm is not permitted except
central knots.
7-5 Using glue is forbidden between parallel elements.

7-6 In central knot, the maximum dimension of gluing is a semi-circle
with 90mm diameter.
7-7 there is no prohibitions for members to pass each other and
members can pass each other without making a knot.
7-8 according to designer, there are no limitations in number of
elements in one knot. It means that the designer can put as many
elements as he/she wants besides each other.
8- Loading conditions:
8-1:
Structure or structures should be delivered to arbitrary committee
one day before the competition and be placed in quarantine which is
similar for all teams. Teams are responsible for insulating the
structures.

8-2:
The priority of loading is determined based on the drawing by
arbitrary committee and team representatives take over the
structure from quarantine and present to arbitrary committee for
judgment.
8-3: If the structure is damaged before the loading, based on the
referees' diagnosis, 15 minutes of recovery time will be given just for
once.
8-4: Loading will keep on till the complete failure of structure.
8-5: reloading the structure in case of destruction in loading position
and survival of the structure while loading is not possible.
8-6: Loading must be done just by team members and getting help
from other teams would be possible by referees' permission.
8-7: The structure will be put into the machine just by 2 members of
the team and then the loading hook will be put in desired location.
Loading condition is mechanized and at a definite moment, the force
will be increased continuously.
8-8: Exerting the load will be carried out by the only member of the
group who is predetermined at the registration time.
8-9: Loading machine is in a special level which is the same for all
teams.
8-10: After weighing out and approval, each team has 6 minutes to
adjust the structure in loading jack till the loading begins. After this
period, for each one-minute, 0.01% of tolerable load will be
diminished.
8-11: Instruction of the way of loading will be done by organizer
team and arbitrary committee. Observing the loading machine is
possible at the time of structure delivery.

8-12: After structure failure, participant team should hand over the
remains of their broken structure gathered in special envelope to
organizing committee at a maximum time of 3 minutes.
9- Calculating points:
9-1 In heavyweight competition, points of structures will be ranked
based on the tolerated load on them.
9-2 If the tolerated load of two structures are the same, the lighter
structure will be ranked in a higher place.
10- Structure arbitration:
10-1:
Arbitration of structure is carried out in 3 phases of admission,
loading and after collapsing the structure and referees announce the
grades and results after the final approval.
10-2:
In case of written complaint of participant teams -according to its
recognition- the referees committee announce the results
conditionally and if there's a need to investigate more and conduct
laboratory work, they will announce the firm result by inquiring the
spaghetti or glue company within 2 weeks after the competition.
10-3:
The final and definite results of judgment will be carved on golden
tablets and will respectfully present to Ministry of Science, Research
and Technology.

11- Codifying the report:
Offering a report which can restate purposes, stages and results of a
project in an appropriate and understandable way in addition to
showing the true scientific and practical value better, creates an
opportunity to research more about that field. Considering this,
everybody can present a comprehensive report of their work. This
report should include these items:







Abstract
Initial designing idea and process of designing
Process of construction
Used materials
Plats of works
Some photos from construction process
And some subjects -in addition to mentioned items- that help
out a better introduction.
Presented reports will be ranked by referees after studying and the
best report will be picked among all teams.
