BASKETBALL
HISTORY
• James Naismith was the Canadian physical education
instructor who invented basketball in 1891.
• The first rules were created in 1892.
• Initially, players dribbled a soccer ball up and down a court of
unspecified dimensions.
• Points were earned by landing the ball in a peach basket.
• Iron hoops and a hammock-style basket were introduced in 1893.
• Another decade passed before the open-ended net was introduced.
This put an end to manually retrieving the ball from the basket each
time a goal was scored.
• In 1959, James Naismith was inducted into the Basketball Hall of
Fame.
HOW TO PLAY
 There are 2 teams
 Ball advances down the court by dribbling,
passing, or shooting
 A player scores by shooting the ball into their
basket; 1 point for free throws, 2 points for
floor shots, 3 points for shots beyond the 3
point line
 The ball is given to the other team after a
scoring
 The game is won by the team with the most
BASKETBALL SAFETY
• Wear appropriate athletic clothing and tennis shoes
• Players need to be aware of all surroundings making sure
to not come in contact with another player, benches or
walls
• Make sure playing area is free of debris and liquid spills
• Practice proper communication, for example, speaking
loud enough for teammates to know where you are on
the court. Only pass the ball to a player if the player is
looking at you.

A pass thrown from over the head, to clear
a defender or for added power.

FIELD GOAL
A basket scored on any shot other than a free
throw, worth 2 or 3 points depending on the
distance of the attempt from the basket.
LAY-UP
A type of shot, where the player dribbles to the
basket and without stopping shoots the ball
(right/left/hop/shoot).

A free shot taken from the free throw line after
a foul; worth 1 point if made.

A shot taken from outside a designated area on
the court; worth 3 points if made

OFFENSE
The team that has the ball; a player or team

Screening- to block a defender from
guarding or staying close to a teammate
Give and Go- the ball handler passes to a
teammate, breaks to the basket, receives
a quick pass, and advances the ball down
the court for a basket
DEFENSE/GUARDING
The team that does not have the ball; the
process used by a team to prevent an
opponent from scoring also called ‘guarding”
Zone Defense- A defense that covers
an area or zone
Man to Man Defense- a defense in
which a player covers another
specific player
Defense
• 1. Stay between opponent and basket
• 2. Defensive stance is a forward stride
position. 1 arm is high and forward towards
opponent, other arm is low and to the side of
the body.
• 3. Maintain a distance of 3 feet away from
opponent.
• 4. Emphasize not crossing fee. A shuffle step
should be used.
Rebounding
• The act of successfully possession of the ball
after a missed field goal or free throw.
• Offensive and defensive players can rebound
