TIME LINE: July-August, 2012
OBJECTIVES:
 To expand the number of opportunities for
youth to participate in sports programming
 Decrease barriers to access sports
programming
 To introduce a new sport into the
community and begin to building interest
 To promote healthy lifestyle choices among
youth
DESCRIPTION: Youth from the KingstonGalloway/Orton Park and Mornelle Court
communities were bused to the University of
Toronto Scarborough (UTSC) outdoor sports
facility, 10 tennis courts were made available.
Experienced UTSC coaches ran a learn-to-play
tennis program for 8 weeks for youth whom had
no prior experience with the sport.
PARTNERS: East Scarborough Storefront, East
Scarborough Boys and Girls Club, University of
Toronto Scarborough Campus – Department of
Athletics and Recreation, made possible by the
United Way and Galin Foundtion.
IMPACT:
 24 youth registered for the program, with a
retention rate of 96%.
 The program followed the progressive tennis
coaching model, youth learned basic
strokes all in the rallying setting. As well as
the basics of scoring, point play and match
play, all to set them up to play on their own
once the program finishes.
 Program was offered free of charge,
breaking down barriers to access
 Youth kept their equipment and were given
a free membership to the UTSC Tennis Club
to encourage them to stay involved.

continue playing once the program finished.
On August 5th youth attended Family Day, part
of the Rogers Cup help at York University and
enjoyed world class matches for the day.

FUTURE PLANS: Tennis was a new sport for many
youth, and they have responded with such
enthusiasm that the East Scarborough Boys and
Girls Club will continue to offer tennis
programming throughout the winter. UTSC has
committed to donating the necessary
equipment to support the program.

Plans are also underway to run another round of
learn-to-play programming in the Spring of 2013.
