You are to complete an investigation of your local environment where you will record details,
observe your local environment and create a Social Studies presentation in a booklet provided.

You will have the opportunity to collect information in class by referring to relevant sites on the
internet. You are also expected to complete some of the inquiry at home. You may conduct
research in pairs, but must write the assessment on your own. Some suggested sites are printed on
the back page.

You will visit the Pakuranga Stream and work with a group called Wai Care.

The assessment will be presented as a “Black Book”. This will be provided to
you and discussed with you by your teacher.
The investigation is made up of 4 parts. You will be expected to complete
all four parts for this assessment.
You will have time in class to investigate the local environment and begin
your project. You will need to do homework to complete the tasks.
Task 5 requires that you create a bibliography of the resources you have
used. Refer to the Tool Box under BYOD to see how to set this out.
Task 6 requires you to evaluate the process of inquiry for NIMBY. This is
available under the folder for the Common Assessment Task – NIMBY.
Make sure you have completed all 4 parts in your investigation before you
hand it in. If there is insufficient room in your Black Book to glue in the
