Mentone Cricket Club held its 125th Anniversary and Hall of Fame induction on Saturday
February 22, 2014, with over 100 current members joined by many past players and
partners, stretching back to the 1950’s and 60’s. The celebration focussed on the
fantastic achievements of the various people who have served the club and many, many
tales shared. 70 people were inducted into the Hall of Fame whilst 11 were immediately
elevated into Legends.

Legends
H.P. Petersen – was made a Life Member in 1952. Was Secretary of the club for 5 seasons,
Treasurer for 18 seasons and was the backbone of the club during financial difficulties, war,
depression and Association unrest.
Stan and Betty Hogben – awarded together as they were simply inseparable. They were made
Life Members in 1952 (Stan) and 1964 (Betty). Stan was number 7 on the most games list with
336, whilst he captured 449 wickets. However with his wife Betty, his work off-field was where he
excelled. Was Treasurer of the club for 41 seasons from 1951 to 1992, still a club record to this
day. Wife Betty was named Life Member in 1964 and supported Stan with all of his Mentone tasks.
The club best & fairest award is named the Hogben Family Medal, whilst the Hogben-Meckiff oval is
named after the Hogben’s.
Harold Douglas – was named Life Member in 1952 and was President for 4 seasons throughout
the late 1950’s before his sudden death. He was widely acknowledged for the development of the
Governor Rd oval, and the installation of the Turf pitch that Mentone plays on today. The
magnificent flagpole at the front of the ground, was erected in his honour.
Max Harris - Life Member in 1959 and a member of Mentone CC's Team of the Century. Played
the most amount of games (487) and scored the highest runs (9,191) in the club’s 125 year
history. Played in 7 Premierships, served 12 seasons as Vice President and played at the club for a
remarkable 43 consecutive seasons.
Don Meckiff – was named Life Member in 1959 and played in 4 Premierships. Number 1 on the
wickets tally with 1,136 and served 8 seasons as President in the 1970s. A great servant of
Mentone CC< he served as captain of various teams, selector, curator and delegate over many
years. The Hogben-Meckiff oval is named after Don and his family.
A (Bert) Downie - Life Member in 1962 and Captain of Mentone CC's Team of the Century.
Played in 5 Premierships in the 1960’s, was President for 2 of those seasons and Vice President for
3. A stylish upper order bat who served as coach, selector and many other roles throughout his
time.
Wayne Youngs – awarded Life Member status in 1981. Was Number 14 in Games (293) and
Number 6 in runs (6,470). Played in 5 Premierships, was First XI Captain for 10 seasons and Club
Champion in 1984/85 and 1985/86. A top order left hand bat, whose sons went on to play in the
First XI. He was Junior Manager for 12 seasons, Junior Coordinator for 6, Club Coach for 3 seasons
and a Selector for 10 seasons.
Rex Blackmore - Life Member in 1985. Number 13 on the games list (296) and Number 4 in the
most runs (7,344). Played in 8 Premierships, was Club Champion for 2 and served 6 seasons as
President. Later on was a major contributor to the Junior section, regarded by many as of the true
characters of the club and a major driver in the social scene of the club.
Brian Quinn – awarded Life Member in 1991. Number 6 on the most games (337) and number 3
in wickets (763). Played in 4 Premierships and served as Assistant Secretary for 10 seasons. Has
been Vic President for the past 3 seasons, including stints as VTCA Delegate and coordinated the
Mentone CC Centenary Book in 1988. Served as Junior Manager and Coach for 16 seasons and has
been awarded Best Clubman 3 times over a 30 year career at Mentone.
David Youngs - Life Member 1993 and member of Mentone CC's Team of the Century. Number 5
on the most runs list (6,612) and 7 on the wickets (568). Played in an incredible 10 Premierships
and holds the record for the most Club Champion awards (11). Junior Manager for 3 seasons,
Social Committee member and Club Coach. Saved his best for Grand Finals and widely regarded as
Mentone’s greatest ever player.
Peter Duffy – awarded Life Member in 2001 and a tireless worker who served as President for 8
consecutive seasons. Number 15 in the most games (294) and number 13 in wickets (415), still
currently playing as First XI captain. Played in 3 Premierships and has served in numerous roles;
curator, Junior Manager, Social Committee, Sponsorship, Recruitment, Council Liaison and
Newsletter Editor. Similarly to all the other Legends, there was no job he couldn't do at the Club,
and no job he didn't do.
