DBS Surgery (Pacemaker of the Brain)
Institute of Neurosciences is well equipped to perform Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery and has
successfully performed this surgery recently. The DBS program at I-NK is led by Dr Hrishikesh Kumar
(Movement disorders neurologist) and Dr Amit Ghosh (functional neurosurgeon).
DBS surgery involves placement of electrodes in specific part of brain. In a way this is a “pacemaker for
the brain”. This particular surgery is most commonly used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and
tremors. Symptoms improve dramatically upon successful completion of surgery and that reduces the
need to take medications. DBS surgery also helps control the symptoms in other movement disorders
like dystonia, myoclonus and chorea. Over last few years, DBS surgery is being used successfully for
psychiatric disorders like refractory Obsessive compulsive neurosis (OCN) and severe Depression.
