Job Purpose
As a member of the Nursery Team this post will work in partnership with staff, parents,
carers and their children to provide quality care for the nursery children. The postholder will
adopt a flexible and professional approach in promoting the development, welfare and
potential of all children.
They will provide high quality, inclusive, fully integrated childcare provision for the nursery
children.
This post will be responsible for supervising the activities of children within the nursery,
including both indoor and outdoors areas, ensuring a safe environment is maintained at all
times
This post will, for the majority of the time, be working under the supervision of senior nursery
staff.
Main responsibilities and duties
1. To be jointly responsible for the development, safety and wellbeing of all the children
attending the Nursery. This will be by providing high quality nursery provision for the
nursery children, which includes a wide range of activities and opportunities to
enable children to achieve their full potential in accordance with the Nursery’s
policies and procedures.
By:

Taking responsibility to become familiar with the Nursery's policies and procedures.
●
Acquiring an in depth knowledge and understanding of the Early Years Foundation
Stage development matters and Statutory Welfare Requirements and applying this
knowledge, in liaison with all members of the staff team, to ensure high quality
nursery provision.
●
Keeping up to date with other government initiatives for Early Years and the latest
research regarding child development and learning.
●
Assisting in creating a high quality learning play environment both indoors and
outdoors that adheres to OFSTED requirements and meets each child’s individual
needs, through planning, effective room organisation and the provision of appropriate
early years resources in accordance with the Early Years Foundation Stage. This
includes interactive displays and planning and preparing specific activities such as
cooking, group times, phonic activities.

Contributing to and then carefully studying the long term and weekly planning to
ensure it is implemented during each session.
●
Insightful observation, assessment and evaluation that leads to planning engaging
activities to support next steps of learning for individual and groups of children. Using
IT skills to take digital photographs to include in records and displays.

Participating in children’s play and conversation to stimulate and extend language,
promote questions and develop ideas.
●
Careful supervision, taking care of children’s personal needs such as toileting, nappy
changing, hand washing and sleeping as well as encouraging self-help and social
skills.

Being aware of how and where other members of the team are being deployed and
being flexible to adjust in response to the needs of the children.
●
Supporting children during snack and lunch time, supervising their eating food and
drinking, then involving children in the clearing and cleaning away afterwards. Adults
and children will sit together to create a nurturing atmosphere and a supportive
environment.

Ensuring drinking water is easily available for the children to drink during each
session.
●
Ensuring the maintenance of high standards of cleanliness and hygiene for children,
families and carers attending the setting in accordance with the Nursery’s policies
and procedures.

Ensuring the maintenance and repair of equipment and premises, completing daily
risk assessments and where necessary completing individual risk assessments,
reporting to the site manager and most senior team member.

Creating a nurturing and caring environment for children, their families and carers,
accessible to all. To integrate children and parents with disabilities, sensitively and
positively into the setting, promoting participation in a range of quality activities and
learning opportunities.

To have an overall knowledge of and provide a service which values and respects
the race, religion, language, culture and needs of all the children and families using
the Nursery.
2. To have responsibility for a number of key children, working in partnership with
families, carers and other professionals ensuring that individual children’s childcare
and development needs are met at all times.
This includes the ability to work independently to

Maintain individual children’s Learning Journals, with insightful observations,
assessments and evaluations across the seven areas of learning in the EYFS that
leads to planning engaging activities to support next steps of learning.

Update SPTO data or any other system the school/nursery uses to monitor children’s
learning and development.
●
Keep regular contact with parents/carers to engage them as partners in their child’s
learning and development and plan for their next steps of learning. This will include
termly meetings and helping them to develop an understanding of the EYFS.
3. To accept responsibility for special projects or areas of work as directed by the
Nursery
Manager/Teacher such as planning and leading parent workshops.
4.To be aware and work within the Health and Safety framework, policies, procedures,
guidelines and legislation including fire drills. Administer First Aid and record accidents
and incidents in line with Nursery procedures.
5. To provide flexibility in covering for staff at short notice in the event of unforeseen
circumstances or planned absence. As a level 3 practitioner to take a lead in the setting
when directed by the Nursery Manager or Teacher.
Supervision and management
To participate in regular supervisions with line manager, annual appraisals with the
nursery manager, peer to peer observations, staff meetings and continued professional
development.
Standards of care and practice are mandated by OFSTED
Problem solving and creativity
Ability to work in creative and imaginative ways with children and their families and to plan
group activities. This may include developing play schemes, creating specific learning
aids, research and adaptation to meet cultural needs, facilitating activities to develop
family’s ideas and needs.
There is a requirement to develop individual programmes involving new innovative
approaches to meet problems as they arise.
Key contacts and relationships
Children, parents and carers are greeted at the beginning and end of each session with
opportunities to discuss minor or routine issues. Appointments are made to discuss more
in depth issues.
It is an essential element of the job to build and maintain a range of close contacts and
relationships with children their families/ carers and other professionals/ agencies relating
to a child’s needs. To receive and pass information and to offer advice and guidance to
families relating to their child.
Following a home visit, parents and carers spend time settling their children in the
Nursery. It is a requirement of the job to guide and assist parents with this.
To work collaboratively to liaise with adult visitors to the Nursery including students.
Decision making
Decisions are taken relating to advising families about appropriate learning and care of
their children.
Decisions are taken daily as to the childcare provision provided.
Working Environment

The work involves some manual handling of persons and equipment indoors and

outdoors in the Nursery. There may be an occasional need to physically lift children
such as for safety or care needs and occasional unpleasant conditions relating to
pupils’ personal hygiene needs.
Some outdoor work, noise and children’s personal hygiene requirements impact on
the normal working environment.
