OBITUARY
Mary ‘Jane’ Cates
Mary “Jane” Cates, 80, passed on May 16, 2016 in Oro
Valley. She was born in Antlers, Oklahoma on June 20,
1935.
She married Conrad Hogan on Dec. 12, 1953. They
moved to Tucson in 1956, then
to San Manuel in 1967, where
she lived for 49 years, raising her
four sons and many neighboring
children. Jane married Joe Cates
on March 31, 1990.
Many called her Mom or Granny,
and remember her for her love and
guidance, as well as her strict rules.
She was very active in her church and could be counted on
to help with any need that arose. It is unlikely that Jane
even knew how many lives she touched. She is probably
smiling down from heaven at all of the calls and prayers
that her husband and sons have received from the many,
many people whose lives she touched
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Will and
Grace Williams;, and, granddaughter, Cassidy Cates. She
leaves behind her husband, Joe Cates; sons, Barry Hogan,

Pinal Supervisors adopt tentative budget for FY 2016/17
FLORENCE -- The Pinal County Board of Supervisors has
adopted the 2016/2017 fiscal year tentative budget for
$410,193,288. It is a structurally balanced budget for the
county.
This tentative budget is $11 million less than the
Correction
In last week’s San Manuel Miner, the San Pedro Valley
Lions Club were credited with placing the flags on the
graves of persons who had served in the military at the
Valley View Cemetery in Mammoth.
That was incorrect.
The VFW Pedro Reynoso Post 2767 of Mammoth, in fact,
placed the flags on the graves including four flags at the
old Mammoth cemetery. The VFW held a ceremony at
the cemetery on May 30, Memorial Day, beginning with
reading the names of the fallen military out loud. The
Chaplain, Lloyd Bradshaw recited In Flanders Fields. The
flags were placed on the graves and then the American
Flag was raised on the flagpole at the cemetery.
We apologize for the error and thank the members of the
VFW for their service both in the military and now, caring
for the fallen.

2015/2016 budget. The property tax will remain the same
at $3.99 per one hundred dollars of assessed valuation.
Assistant County Manager Leo Lew made the
presentation before the board and his message was that of
cautious optimism for the upcoming year.
“Related to the property valuations, our new
construction is still relatively modest, but there has been
some growth over last year at $37.7 million.” Lew said. “This year we are looking at $50.9 million. So we are
headed in the right direction and slowly increasing from
the bottom which looks to be the norm for us.”
He also pointed out that general fund sales tax revenues
have been growing healthy over the past two years and are
continuing to grow.
Looking at the general fund distribution, 60 percent
will go to the public safety and law sector that includes
the Sheriff’s Office, Courts and the County Attorney’s
Office. General government expenditures comes out to
24 percent in the distribution of the general fund and 16
percent to public health and a category other.
On every dollar of property tax that is collected by Pinal
County, only 25 cents goes to the county, while the rest
goes to school districts, Central Arizona College, cities and
towns along with other taxing entities.
By law, the tentative budget can decrease and monies
can be transferred, but the total cannot increase.

San Manuel Miner
All Warner Smith wants is a fighting
chance.
Smith, who grew up in San Manuel and
currently resides in Tucson, was diagnosed
with Amyotrphic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS),
more commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s
disease.
ALS is a rapidly progressive, invariably
fatal neurological disease that attacks
the nerve cells (neurons) responsible for
controlling voluntary muscles. The average
life expectancy once an individual is
diagnosed is 2 – 5 years.
No cure has yet been found for ALS.
Smith was diagnosed two years ago.
A 1991 graduate of San Manuel
High School, Smith earned a football

scholarship to the University of Arizona
(1991-94), where he was an All-Pac 10
offensive lineman. He was drafted by the
Indianapolis Colts and enjoyed a brief NFL
career before it was ended by injuries.
His San Manuel upbringing makes him
an admiral opponent versus ALS, which
can expect to face its toughest foe yet.
“Growing up in a mining town instilled
a level of toughness that helped me
throughout my whole career,” Smith told
the Miner during a recent interview. “It
was a childhood and a high-school career
that I wouldn’t trade with anybody.”
“I think I was incredibly lucky to be
raised in the miners’ lifestyle that I
don’t think exists anymore,” he added.
“When the mine was still open there was
commonality between everyone that was
there and that was special. I don’t think

Smith and his wife, Becky, have a young
daughter, Carlee.
Friends, family and former teammates
are putting on a “Give Warner a Fighting
Chance” event to help raise funds for
future medical expenses, living expenses
and Carlee’s college fund.
Steve Hopkins, the event chairman and
one of Smith’s friends, has organized the
weekend at the Starpass Marriott Resort
& Spa, June 24-26. It includes a dinner,
auctions, raffles and a roast of Warner on
June 24, a golf tournament, lunch and a
barbeque on June 25, and a family day on
June 25.
Other friends have organized additional
fundraisers, including t-shirts and a Big 15
Raffle, which is limited to only 300 tickets.
All proceeds from the raffle will go into a
trust to cover Carlee’s college education.
Fifteen prizes will be awarded as part of
the Big 15 Raffle, including a $5,000 cash
grand prize. Other prizes include Apple
laptops, five cash prizes ranging $100$2,500, and more.
Tucker Johnson, a lifelong friend,
classmate and teammate of Smith’s, is
heading the Big 15 raffle. He called the
pair’s friendship “one in a million.”
“Obviously, Warner has been a big part of
my life since I attended school,” Johnson
said. “To see him and know what he and
his family going through now really breaks

my heart because this guy is a machine
and he always was. To see that machine
kind of break down in front of our eyes is
tough.”
“He’s more of a brother than a friend,”
he continued. “To see someone that I love
like that and know what he is going to go

through, that’s why I’m doing everything I
can to help.”
Johnson is one of what he called a “chore
group” of friends who have known each
other for 35 years. They still hunt and
“hang out” together.
Why has the small, close-knit group
remained so close of the years?
“Probably because I guess we’re all nuts,”
Smith responded in jest. “Just being from
the Tri-Community I think everybody
understands each other in a way, and has
things in common with people, (that’s
different) from others who aren’t from the
area.”
It’s been that group of friends and more
who have to come together to support the
man Hopkins called a “local hometown
hero.”
“On the day I learned of my diagnosis,
which was before the Ice Bucket Challenge,
nobody really knew what ALS was,” Smith
recalled. “I can remember feeling like I was
the only person on the planet and it was a
very lonely feeling.”
“I’ve completely did a one-eighty from
that,” he continued. “I’m touched and
honored from the support I’m receiving
from people.”
Smith moves around mostly be scooter
theses day, avoiding the unnecessary risk
of falling and causing significant injury.
He still continues to work his full-time job
and enjoys hunting and fishing. He called

Honors students enjoy a day of fun in Oracle
Phi Theta Kappa is one of the most recognized two year
honors societies on community college campuses in the
US. The students and advisors work hard during the
school year on more than just keeping up their grades.
Phi Theta Kappa is about so much more. Members and
advisors take part in honors research on ways to make
their community better, participate in highway clean-

Fire at ASARCO
Hayden crusher
Last Tuesday, big plumes of smoke billowed out of the
crusher at the ASARCO complex in Hayden after sparks
from a welder started a blaze. The fire started about 9
a.m. and it was extinguished within an hour and a half.
Local fire departments assisted with the blaze.
All appropriate environmental and safety agencies were
notified. About 30 people work at the crusher. Thankfully
no one was injured in the blaze.
At press time there was not a estimated cost for the

ups, and find, as well as implement, ways to boost college
enrollment and retention numbers.
At the end of every year the Central Arizona College
Phi Theta Kappa members and advisors from all five
campuses take part in a cultural excursion. This event is
not just about gaining knowledge on the business or event
they take part in, it’s about fun. This year the Aravaipa
Campus chapter pitched a day of fun and adventure in
Oracle.
The 2016-2017 Honors theme the chapter will be
researching and writing about is “Natural versus
Engineered” (PTK, 2016). One of the subtopics looked
into was ways to bring people closer to nature without
leaving a giant environmental footprint. Arizona Zipline
Adventures fell right into the topic of possible research
themes.
Emily, the owner of Arizona Zip Adventures, was more
than helpful to the Phi Theta Kappas, answering their
questions regarding how the business was able to bring
people closer to nature without leaving a large impact on
the wildlife of the surrounding areas. She revealed that the
ziplines were carefully constructed with consideration to
breathtaking views and winds. The creation of Arizona Zip
Adventures took only two years when the idea of it was
initially brought up.
Thirty-one members and advisors of Phi Theta Kappa
Alpha Theta Delta Chapter got to experience the beauty
and exhilaration of Arizona Zip Adventures first hand on
May 18, some driving over two and a half hours to join
in on the experience. They spent a very cool morning,
blessed with light rain, ziplining over the beautiful Arizona
desert and hiking light trails that showcase the gorgeous

giant 50-foot swing, which emphasized team building as
all the members pulled a rope, to hoist up someone to be
launched. Additionally, members panned for gold and, of
course, engaged in fellowship with one another.
“Everyone had a great time, especially with an
enthusiastic and passionate staff,” said one member.
Another, Heath Moulton, added, “The Oracle excursion
was one of the best team-building and fellowship activities
I’ve ever participated in. Everyone was supportive of
everyone else, and there was much laughter and fun had
by all. Thank you, Arizona Zipline Adventures and Oracle

Michelle Gomez stated, “I had a blast at Arizona Zipline

himself the “same guy as

Although he is keenly
aware of his circumstances,
as he said in a video
produced by the Muscular
Dystrophy Association,
Smith knows some live
with ALS for 20 years or
more. His doctor says
his diagnosis is slowly
progressing and called ALS
the “Snowflake Disease”
– it affects everyone
differently.
Smith said he tries to
approach each day like his
father did when his dad
was fighting brain cancer –
with dignity and not feeling
sorry for himself.
“You can’t wake up in the
morning with a doomsday
scenario,” he said. “You
have to keep living.”
When asked how he
defines “a chance,” Smith
answered no differently
than you might expect
anyone else with a wife and
children, and without ALS.
“I want everything out of
life that everyone else does
and dreams of,” he said.
“You want to watch your
daughter grow up and you
want to spend time with
my wife. You want all of
those things that everybody
else has. I’m going to wake
up every day and fight
for those things just like
everybody else does.”

Sea Lions open season with a win
The Sea Lions Swim Team traveled
to Parkside (Florence Anthem) for the
first swim meet of the 2016 against
the Parkside Piranhas, San Tan Valley
Barracudas and Globe Piranhas. The Sea
Lions won the meet with 500 points, while
Parkside finished with 418 points, San Tan
Valley finished with 284 points, and Globe
finished with 74 points. In the Central
Arizona Swimming League, the Sea Lions
have won every swim meet over the past
nine years and hope to make a run at a
10th consecutive League Championship
this summer.
The meet was very competitive and the
outcome of the meet was not clear until
the Sea Lions won the Freestyle Relays in
the majority of the age groups at the end of
the meet. The 82 point margin of victory
by the Sea Lions is the smallest in many
years. Coach Alex Gort commented, “The
competition level of the rest of the league
is considerably better this summer. If
not for some great relay swims by the Sea
Lions, the final standings may have ended
up differently.”
Two swimmers entered the maximum
number of events and won them all. Anya
HOW MANY GALLONS?
For all you swimmers and sun worshippers out there: the date draws nigh.
The San Manuel Pool will be opening SOON!
Repairs have been made and volunteers are using their time to repaint
EVERYTHING that can be painted including the bottom of the pool. As soon as
the painting is done and the repairs have been tested, it will be time to fill the
pool. And we at the San Manuel Miner want to know:
HOW MANY GALLONS WILL IT TAKE TO FILL THE POOL?
We’re even going to make a contest of it. The person who guesses the
closest to the amount it actually takes to fill the San Manuel Pool will win a
season pass to the pool, courtesy of M-SM Community Schools.
There are a couple ways to win.
• Send us a PM with your guess.
• You can email your guess to [email protected].
• Or you can drop off your entry through the slot in the Miner office door.
Only one entry per person. Be sure to include your name, address and phone
number. The winner will be announced at the grand reopening of the pool,
tentatively set for June 15.
June 8, 2016
Zovko (8) and Evan Apuron (12) both won
all six events they swam at the meet.
The following swimmers had first place
finishes on Saturday:

This was the first swim meet for several
swimmers on the team and they performed
extremely well and had lots of fun! Listed
are swimmers who competed in their first
swim meet as a Sea Lion on Saturday:
Jocelyn Hudson (6), Vicente Curry (10),
Nate Vance (10), and Ann Marie Campbell
(13).
Juliana Ramirez was named Sea Lions
Beast of the Week. Nine year olds have a
tough time adjusting to the longer races,
which are twice as long as when they were
eight year olds. Juliana put in a great
week of practice and it paid off at the meet.
She swam all the events, and achieved
best times in each event. Her grit and
determination was most evident in the
50 Meter Butterfly, where she kept going
strong and steady, and passed several
swimmers in the last 15 meters to finish
second – a great accomplishment as a 9
year old. Additionally, she swam double
legs in both the Medley and Freestyle
Relays, to help ensure wins in both.
The Sea Lions will travel to Florence to
face the Florence Sharks on Saturday,
June 11.
There is still time to join the team contact Alex or Wendy Gort at 896-2190
or stop by the Mammoth Pool between 4
and 6 p.m. (Monday through Friday) for
more information.
