Ribbon Wrinkle Adjustment Correct ribbon alignment ensures a smooth, taut ribbon flow during the print process. On thermal transfer-equipped models, irregular voids that extend diagonally through the printed images may be a sign of ribbon overlapping (wrinkling). CAUTION! Do not perform this procedure until the following adjustments and checks have been completed: • Print Head Leveling Adjustment • Print Head Pressure Adjustment • Print Head Burn Line Adjustment • Platen Roller examined for signs of wear, debris buildup and excessive side-to-side play. To adjust ribbon wrinkle: 1. Load 4 in. (102 mm) media. 2. Load 4 in. ribbon, but do not secure the leader to the ribbon take-up hub. Allow the media and ribbon to feed together from the printer. 3. Move the print head leveling thumbscrew (green knob) to its right-most position. 4. Press the FEED button several times to normalize the ribbon and media tracking. Note: Continuous excessive side-to-side [lateral] movement of the labels must be corrected before continuing this procedure. Typical causes include uneven print head pressure, worn platen roller, or worn platen bearings. 5. Observe the ribbon for rippling and bagging as it travels from the ribbon supply hub and under the print head assembly. If the travel is smooth, continue to the next step; otherwise: a. Loosen the ribbon idler screw. b. While repeatedly pressing the FEED key, slowly turn the ribbon idler cam until the ribbon is dispensed smoothly from the ribbon supply hub to the print head assembly. c. Carefully tighten the ribbon idler screw. d. Feed several more labels to verify adjustment. e. Repeat this step, if necessary. 6. Attach the ribbon to the ribbon take-up hub, then continue according to printer type: • Non-Display models: Simultaneously press the PAUSE + FEED buttons. • Display-equipped models: Select a quantity of Quick Ribbon Test labels 7. Check for ribbon wrinkle. If the ribbon travel is smooth, skip to Step 10. Otherwise, continue to the next step. 8. Fine-tune using the ribbon shield: Note: The ribbon does not need to be removed to perform this adjustment. a. Slightly loosen the ribbon shield adjustment screws. b. Move either side of the ribbon shield ‘in’ or ‘out’ to smooth the ribbon and remove any wrinkle-related voids from the printed labels. c. Carefully tighten the ribbon shield adjustment screws. d. Print several labels. e. Verify the adjustment corrected the problem and repeat this step, if necessary. 9. Install the operating media and adjust the media width, if necessary. Note: The operating media is the actual labeling material you will print on. 10. Print and examine a label. 11. Readjust the ribbon shield slightly, if needed.
