A. The Example for Remedy,
Vs. 6-8
Vs. 6,
We are to take action in life,
which is the opposite of being
lazy.
ATSEL, “Sluggard or Lazy”
or “Slothful”, is used 14 times
and only in Proverbs.
Principles of the Sluggard.
Principles of the Sluggard.
1. They always fail because of
laziness that becomes moral
failure, Prov 6:6, 9.
Principles of the Sluggard.
1. They always fail because of
laziness that becomes moral
failure, Prov 6:6, 9.
2. They are an irritant to
others, Prov 10:26; 15:19.
3. Their souls want nothing,
and they get nothing,
Prov 13:4.
3. Their souls want nothing,
and they get nothing,
Prov 13:4.
4. They take no initiative,
Prov 19:24.
3. Their souls want nothing,
and they get nothing,
Prov 13:4.
4. They take no initiative,
Prov 19:24.
5. They do not do their tasks
on time, Prov 20:4.
6. They will not work,
Prov 21:25.
6. They will not work,
Prov 21:25.
7. They create imaginary
excuses, Prov 22:13.
8. Their wealth and health
deteriorate, Prov 24:30.
8. Their wealth and health
deteriorate, Prov 24:30.
9. Yet, they consider
themselves to be wise,
Prov 26:13-16.
Prov 21:25-26,
“The desire of the sluggard
puts him to death, for his
26
hands refuse to work; all
day long he is craving….”
As part of the remedy we are
commanded to “observe”,
(to look at by direct volition),
the ways of the ant. Teaching
us self-discipline, foresight,
and prudent industry.
Prov 19:24,
“The sluggard buries his hand
in the dish, but will not even
bring it back to his mouth.”
Vs. 7,
The ant has no one who
decides for, oversees or rules
over her. Yet she works
diligently and effectively to
provide for herself and the
entire colony.
Vs. 8,
The ant is a model of
unwearied and well-planned
labor.
Prov 30:25,
“The ants are not a strong
people, but they prepare their
food in the summer.”
Wisdom is not merely selfdiscipline, but insight to identify
what is most important, at what
time, discerning what is
necessary, with discipline to
pursue it until finished.
B. The Problem, Vs. 9-10:
Vs. 9,
Admonishes the slug to repent
of his foolish laziness and to
get up quickly and redeem the
time before it is too late.
“Sleep” is the way of the slug,
there is little or no conscious
thought on his part even when
he is awake!
They think things can be put
off without consequence, yet
eventually the bill comes due,
and when it does they have no
resources to pay it.
Vs. 10, cf. Prov 24:33
We should check our
inclination to rest against the
need of the moment.
Prov 20:13,
“Do not love sleep, or you
will become poor; open your
eyes, and you will be satisfied
with food.”
Eccl 5:12a,
“The sleep of the working
man is pleasant, whether he
eats little or much.”
C. The Warning, Vs. 11:
Cf. Prov 24:34
Poverty comes unexpectedly
to take a person’s substance,
by stealth and by force.
Prov 28:19,
“He who tills his land will
have plenty of food, but he
who follows empty pursuits
will have poverty in plenty.”
Grace Offering
Gal 6:6-7,
“The one who is taught the word
is to share all good things with
7
the one who teaches him. Do not
be deceived, God is not mocked;
for whatever a man sows, this he
will also reap.”
