POSITION DESCRIPTION Lifeguard (Full or Part-time, Seasonal)
DUTY STATION:
Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians Pool
REPORTS TO:
Facilities Director

POSITION SUMMARY:
Performs lifeguarding activities, including the enforcement of pool regulations; makes
rescues; administers cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other first aid; and performs
related duties as required.
This is a seasonal job class. Lifeguards are assigned to the tribal pool and work under the
direct supervision of the Facilities Director or OSHA Officer. Duties of this class are
performed during weekdays, weekends, holidays and irregular hours.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Visually observes the use of the tribal pool and surrounding area; enforces water safety;
removes hazardous obstacles from pool area and water; reports hazardous conditions
which cannot be corrected.
Performs swimming rescues in emergencies, utilizing accepted lifesaving techniques; uses
emergency rescue apparatus such as paddle boards, rescue tubes, masks, fins and snorkels.
Administers cardiopulmonary resuscitation and/or other first aid treatment; operates
resuscitator; summons emergency vehicle in critical situations.
Prepares routine reports on standardized forms and maintains accurate records of first aid
rendered and rescue actions.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Considerable knowledge of: modern water safety practices and accepted lifesaving
and lifeguarding techniques; current principles and the performance of first aid
techniques.
Ability to: swim for extended periods and to accomplish swimming rescues; use
appropriate rescue equipment; perform first aid treatments, including
cardiopulmonary resuscitation; visually observe and evaluate emergency situations
and to respond quickly in making swimming rescues

Deals effectively and tactfully with the public in the enforcement of water safety and
park regulations;
Reads and writes English and speak clearly and effectively;
Operates radio and telephone communication devices effectively.
Willingness to work weekdays, weekends, holidays and irregular hours.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Education: There are no formal minimum educational requirements for this class;
however, the ability to read and write English is essential.
Experience: Some recent experience as a lifeguard is preferred.
License: Possession of a valid California license at the appropriate level including
necessary special endorsements, as required by the State of California to perform the
essential job functions of the position.
Certificates: Possession of a valid CPR/First Aid card.
BACKGROUND CHECK and DRUG TEST:
Candidates for this position will be subject to criminal and character background checks
and fingerprinting as well as an initial drug test after conditional job offer is made.

Confidentiality is an absolute must in every position at the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok
Indians and is cause for immediate termination if not followed to the highest standard. All
employees are required to sign a confidentiality agreement upon hire date.
INDIAN PREFERENCE:
Preference in hiring is given to: (1) Qualified Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians
members; and (2) qualified American Indians in accordance with Title 25, U.S. Code,
Section 472 and 473. Applicants claiming Indian preference must submit verification of
Indian eligibility.
