JOB OVERVIEW
To supervise the delivery of professional design services for Geotechnical and Materials Engineering.
ACCOUNTABILITIES
Required:

Leads the analysis, development, and implementation of Geotechnical and Materials design solutions.

Directs and oversees design projects providing oversight on the procurement of consultants for design
work, setting terms of reference (TOR), overseeing proposal evaluations, recommending contract
awards, and ensuring contracting policy and procedures are followed.

Functions as team member in a project management environment representing delivery of the geotechnical;
component of a project.

Provides senior professional advisory services in Geotechnical and Materials engineering to senior
managers, program staff, engineering consultants and other stakeholders.

Manages consultation and assessment processes to ensure obligations for consultation are met.

Keeps current on Geotechnical and Materials engineering through ongoing professional development,
participation in conferences and symposia, and literature review.

Leads and participates on provincial and/or program committees, contributing technical and
professional expertise to the development of policy and standards.

Supervises licensed and non-licensed professional and technical staff including assignment of work,
development and evaluation of performance plans and approval of leave.

Prepares and/or negotiates contracts, monitors performance and/or authorizes payment within existing
budgets and acts as expense authority.

Responds on an on-call emergency basis to geohazard events that impact the operation of the highway system
and develops practical and cost effective remediation decisions under compressed time frames with little to no
time available for formal analysis.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Registered, or immediately eligible for registration in British Columbia with the Association of
Professional Engineers & Geoscientists

Degree in Geological, Geotechnical or Civil (specialized in Geotechnical Engineering) or equivalent as
recognized by APEGBC.

Minimum 7 years’ experience directly related to Geotechnical Engineering in the Transportation
industry.

Project management experience in infrastructure planning, design and/or construction.

Experience writing geotechnical reports, requests for proposals, contact specifications, rationales in support of
recommendations and decisions or equivalent types of documents.

Experience using industry standard geotechnical engineering software and MS Office applications

Experience preparing, proposal requests, specifications for tendered and RFP based contracts.

Preference may be given to applicants with experience with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of field exploration, investigative, laboratory testing, and modelling techniques.

Knowledge of the principles of soil and rock mechanics, and geotechnical engineering as applied to
slope stability , foundations, seismic, and pavement structure design; aggregate stability and
geohazard assessments for transportation infrastructure.

Knowledge of industry standards, codes and guidelines.

Knowledge of asset management techniques.

Knowledge of contract management, contract risks, payment strategies, and contract administration.

Knowledge of balance between risk and cost in achieving effective engineering solutions. s Knowledge
of the application of Provincial legislation which guides the position’s work.

Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
