LAB INFO
ABOUT US
The Information & Communication Technology (ICT) Division is represented on all five campuses of the
University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), namely, Howard College, Medical School, Edgewood, Pietermaritzburg
and Westville. There are forty common student computer LABs that are maintained by the Division across all
five campuses and it is also responsible for most of the student related computing activities at the University.
We are a service orientated division that strives to provide an excellent set of standardized core services as
well as being able to provide for individual consulting where the need is different from the norm. The division
is responsible for many ICT related activities at the University. Centralized services provided include
authentication services, networking infrastructure, GroupWise email, Internet, Student LABs, Student LAB
Help Desk facilities, Konica Minolta printing kiosks, consulting services, document scanning, laser printing,
colour printing and many more services. All LABs have access control and most of them are open 24 hours a
day, 7 days a week. ICT provides full support to all ICT controlled LABs and limited support to a few
departmental LABs. The division also provides computer LAB facilities for students with disabilities across all
five campuses of UKZN.
PC LAB OVERVIEW
The Division of Information & Communication Technology (ICT) is represented on all five campuses of the
University of KwaZulu-Natal. The division is responsible for many ICT related activities at the University.
Centralized services provided include, authentication services, email, internet, student labs, Konica Minolta
printing kiosks, networking infrastructure, software, hardware, helpdesk, consulting services and many more
services too numerous to mention.
We are a service orientated division that strives to provide an excellent set of standardized core services as
well as being able to provide for individual consulting where the need is different from the norm. The facilities
in the labs are connected to the Local Area Networks (LANs) running under Novell. On all campuses, a fibre
optic backbone network runs across campus and connects all the LANs maintained by ICT to one another and,
ultimately, to the world- wide network of computers referred to as the Internet.
Each computer lab offers Pentium powered PCs and laser printing facilities. There is a per page fee for laser
printing. All computers have Microsoft Windows XP operating system installed. The storage media for each
computer is a USB memory stick. PS: All new computers purchased do not have stiffy drives. Disk space
(150MB) will be allocated to each student on the LAN. Students are responsible for the backup of their data.
Lab consultants are on duty to help with certain aspects of software packages and hardware related problems.
Scanners for scanning text and graphics (both mono & colour) are also available. Most of the labs are open
24hrs to accommodate both part/full-time students & to make our services more accessible to all students
registered with the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
In using the facilities users indicate that they agree to abide by the rules of the Labs.
ACCESS TO COMPUTER LABS
To have access to the computer facilities you need to be a registered student at this University with a valid
student card; which has been stamped and programmed by RMS. To enter the lab, merely swipe your card at
the turnstile. If you have a problem, contact a consultant or the Student Computer Help desk. Common error
messages, for "not programmed”, “wrong issue level", "not authorized", "misread" error messages, contact
RMS to be programmed. "Already in area" error messages, contact the Student Computer Help desk.

Student Computer Facility Rules
STUDENT COMPUTER LABORATORY RULES
The following regulations apply to all computer laboratories at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). It is
the responsibility of the computer user to know and understand these regulations. A user is defined as a
student, staff member or any other person making use of the University`s computer laboratory. These
regulations are intended to safeguard the University`s computer resources for your continued benefit as well
as to protect the rights of other users. Breach of these regulations will result in such users being banned from
using the laboratories, and or to disciplinary procedures, and or to prosecution under South African law. If any
aspect of the regulations is not understood, please approach the Lab Consultant or Information &
Communication Technology (ICT) Division for clarification. The actions of users must be in compliance with the
South African law and the rules of UKZN.
General rules
1. University computer laboratory, including printers, may only be used for official University purposes.
Private or personal work may not be undertaken without the permission of the Director, ICT.
2. Users may not create a disturbance or interfere with other users.
3. No smoking, eating or drinking is permitted in the computer laboratories.
4. Users shall not litter, cause any mess or leave the laboratories in an untidy state.
5. Users shall obey all reasonable instructions of Lab Consultants.
Rights of Use
1. Users shall only gain access to the computer laboratory by producing a UKZN student or staff card, or
written authorisation to use the laboratory.
2. Users shall produce proof of identity at the request of the Lab Consultant or a University official.
3. Users shall not share, distribute or use access identifications or passwords other than those assigned
to them.
4. It is the responsibility of the student to logout after using the computer. Any student who either
intentionally or negligently fails to logout will be held responsible for whatever purpose the computer
is used for whilst being left active.
Use of Hardware
1. Users must treat all computer laboratory and equipment with due care and consideration. Users must
report any misuse of computer laboratory or equipment to the Lab Consultant.
2. No equipment may be removed from computer laboratories or tampered with in any way.
Use of Software and Data
1. Users shall not use any software other than official University software without the authority of the
Lab Consultant.
2. Users shall not make use of University laboratory computers to access or copy any computer games,
pornography, viruses, movies and music for personal use.
3. Users shall not play computer games on University laboratory computers unless authorised by a
lecturer.
4. Users shall not interfere or tamper with software configurations or any system data files.
5. Users shall respect all copyright and licensing requirements and intellectual property rights. Users shall
not copy software or other files from the University computer systems without due permission.
6. Users are responsible for resources under their control. Any file found on a disk or removable media,
in a person`s possession will be assumed to be owned by that person unless the contrary can be
proven on a balance of probability.
7. Users shall not access or in any way alter other user`s files without authorisation.
Use of Networks
1. Users may not attempt to bypass or undermine the system security. The system security must be
observed at all times.
2. No software may be loaded, developed or executed on University laboratory computers that attempt
to alter the network file servers or other equipment.
3. Users may only access those laboratories which they have been specifically authorised to use. Users
shall not access or attempt to access any other laboratory, equipment, systems or data that they are
not specifically authorised to.
4. Only material relating to users courses and duties at the University may be downloaded from the
Internet.
5. Users shall not send messages using E-mail facilities to an individual or a large number of users that
may be considered undesirable or harassment by some or all off the recipients.
Consequences of Breach of Rules
Breaching these rules could, apart from possible disciplinary action in terms of the Rules for Student
Discipline, result in a variety of departmental penalties, ranging from a verbal warning, at one end of the
scale, to removal of the user from the computer laboratory for a period of up to 2 weeks. Commission of a
second or subsequent offence under any of these rules can result in a recommendation for a formal student
disciplinary procedure. It must be noted that removal from the computer laboratory means that a student
cannot continue with his or her computer-related work in a course, which can have a negative impact on his
or her academic studies.
Departmental Appeals
Appeals may be put in writing to the ICT Laboratory Manager, giving full details of the reason for the appeal.
Student disciplinary matters are not dealt with by ICT and appeals follow the normal University disciplinary
procedures.
Policy Duration
This policy is effective from the underlying date and will be in force until official notice is given to the contrary.

Option
Explanation
Example
v=number
between 131
The v option defines the POP3 clients view number. If multiple POP3 clients
access the same GroupWise mailbox, each client must use a different view
number in order to see a fresh mailbox.
User_ID:v=1
For example, if two POP3 clients access a mailbox and the first client downloads
the unread messages, the second client will not be able to download the
messages unless it is using a different view number than the first client.
If this option is not used, the default value is 1.
d
The d option deletes the messages from the GroupWise mailbox after they have User_ID:d
been downloaded to the POP3 client.
p
The p option purges the messages from the GroupWise mailbox after they have
been downloaded to the POP3 client.
User_ID:p
t=1-1000
The t option defines the download period, starting with the current day. For
example, if you specify 14, then only messages that are 14 days old or newer
will be downloaded. If this option is not used, the default value is 30 days.
User_ID:t=14
n
The n option downloads messages in RFC-822 format rather than the default
MIME format.
User_ID:N
m
The m option downloads messages in MIME format. This is the default.
User_ID:M
s
The s option presets the file size when the STAT command is executed. If the
user’s mailbox contains a lot of messages or large messages, it can take a long
time to calculate the file size. With this option, the STAT command will always
report an artificial file size of 1, which can save time.
User_ID:S
l=1-1000
The l option limits the number of messages to download for each POP3 session.
For example, if you want to limit the number of messages to 10, you would
enter l=10. If this option is not used, the default value is 100 messages.
