Description:
Objectives:
Teacher:
In today’s lesson students will learn about the many by-products of beef and where
most of these by products come from on the animal. They will also learn some
nutritional information of beef cattle. They will be learning this information while playing
Bingo. During the game they should all develop a firm understanding of what the terms
vertical, horizontal and diagonal mean.
Substitute Directions:
Each student will need 1 of each: (have __________ & __________pass these out)
Game boards and Board Pieces are located in the sub folder.
• “Beefo Bingo” game boards
• “By-products Board Pieces” sheet
 Also give each group a couple bottles of glue, and 4 pairs of scissors
You will need :
• Container (is located under my desk)
• 2 “By-products Board Pieces” sheets (one cut into small pieces to draw from
container)
****You will also need a marker to mark items already called on the sheet that is not cut up.
Activity Outline:
1. Read through the introduction information with the students. Let them make
comments or ask them questions about what they think comes from beef animals.
Make sure that they know beef comes from cows.
2. There are enough copies of the game board and the game board pieces so
each student has one. Give each student one “Beefo Bingo” game board
and one “By-products Board Pieces” sheet.
3. Have the students cut out the by-product pieces. Then they should select
24 of them and glue them to the game board. The center square is a free
spot so nothing should be glued there. You may want to laminate the
boards after they are put together. ***(Or you could put the boards together
before hand instead of having the students do it.) I recommend doing this.
4. There is one laminated by-products sheet to keep track of what
by-products have been called. Another by-products sheet is cut up
and should be put into the container to pull out and “call” the products.
5. Give the students “markers” for their game boards. There is a jar of M & M’s in the
bottom right drawer of my desk, pass each student a about 20 or so M &M’s and be
sure to tell them NOT to eat them that they were all spilled on the floor earlier.( This
should deter most of them from eating them)
6. Once each student has a gameboard with their pieces on it you can begin calling the
products from the container. Just reach into the container and draw out a byproduct
piece, then call this out to the group.
7. The students should look at their board to see if they have that by-product. If
they do, then they cover it up with a marker (M & M).
8. The first student to have five squares in a row covered, either vertically,
horizontally, or diagonally wins. (Make sure the students understand the
meaning of vertically, horizontally, and diagonally before beginning.) The prize is a free
slushy from the cafeteria.
(Please Read to Class and have brief discussion)
Introduction:
Almost the entire beef animal can be used to benefit man in some way. From a typical
1,000 pound steer, 400 pounds is used for beef that we eat and the remaining 600
pounds are used as by-products.
Some common types of beef are pot roast, sirloin steak, ground beef, rib eye steak, and
tenderloin steak. Beef is a good source of protein (which builds, maintains, and repairs
body tissues), iron (which helps red blood cells carry oxygen to body cells and tissues),
zinc (which is a mineral used for growth and maintaining the immune system), and Bvitamins (which promotes healthy skin, keeps the nervous system healthy, and are
important for digestion and metabolism). Beef by-products are anything made from a
beef animal other than beef. You probably use more beef by-products than you think!
One of the most important cattle by-products is insulin, a treatment for people with
diabetes. Other by-product examples include:
Things that come from Bone, Horn, Hooves, & Gelatin
Combs, gelatin candy (Gummy Bears), marshmallows, mayonnaise, gelatin,
photographic film, steel ball bearings with bone charcoal, fine bone china, pet food, and
vitamin capsules/gel coatings.
Things that come from Hide & Hair
Insulation, paint brushes, glue for bookmaking and band aids, clothes, shoes, luggage,
saddles, furniture, automobiles, volleyballs, basketballs, and baseball gloves.
Products that come form Fats and Fatty Acids
Shampoo, soaps, shaving creams, cosmetics, deodorants, candles, crayons, floor wax,
detergents, hydraulic break fluid, plastics, insecticides, paints, perfumes, and synthetic
rubber.
****Now begin the Beefo Bingo Game
Tell the students that now we will being to review some of the by products that
come from beef cattle. Explain that there will be a prize at the end of the game.
If time permits you can play the game multiple times
Keep a close watch on the time!!!
During the last 5 or so minutes of class you can talk with the students
about what you did today. Ask them a few questions.
Discussion Questions:
1. Name five beef by-products.
2. What parts of a beef animal are used for beef by-products?
3. Name some common types of beef that are eaten.
