Overview of Resources in ‘Time – Durations and Conversions’ Overview: A great collection of time-related activities, covering objectives such as time durations, conversion, averages, data handling, mental calculation and calculator use. This pack covers a range of core skills as well as providing an extended problem solving scenario, where pupils interpret data about marathon runner times using the skills they have practised. Three Hares – Race Durations (IWB) This activity presents 3 time difference calculations in the context of a marathon race. The differences require calculations across the hour. Use the settings to differentiate: a) differences where the minutes are higher on the second time making counting up easier. b) difference where the minutes are lower on the second time. Conversion Exercise – Hours to Minutes (IWB) Convert hours-and-minutes to minutes by multiplying the hour part by 60 and then adding back to the minutes part. This activity provides good 'in context' practice of multiplication using a unit multiple (6x) to achieve a multiple of 10 (60x). Conversion Exercise – Minutes to Hours (IWB) Convert minutes to hours-and-minutes by partitioning (by dividing by 60) the minutes, creating whole hours with a remainder of minutes. This activity provides good 'in context' practice of division using a unit factor (6) to achieve a division by a multiple of 10 (60). Conversion Exercise Worksheets A and B (PDF x 3) Two sets of exercises to practise conversion – in the context of runners’ times for a marathon race. Sheet A asks pupils to convert Hours/Minutes to Minutes and Sheet B asks for conversions of Minutes to Hours/Minutes. For answers, see the separate sheet: Conversion Sheets – Answers. Extended Problem – 3 Marathons Extended Problem – 3 Marathons ANSWERS (Word doc x 2) A chance for pupils to test out their time calculation skills – with this extended contextual problem: “Three friends decided to compete against each other in three marathons. Afterwards they quarrelled about who was best. Analyse the data and answer the questions to help make observations about their performance.” There are three levels of questions, getting harder as pupils progress. Time Intervals – Sport Set C (IWB) Simply solve 10 time difference problems. The options menu provides differentiation opportunities from level 1 where the components of the problem always fall on 15/30/45/00 times to level 4 which is completely random. This problem set will always set problems where the difference is >1 hour. Overview of Resources in ‘Time – Durations and Conversions’ Time Intervals – Sport Set D (IWB) Solve 10 time difference problems within a running and fitness context. The options menu provides differentiation opportunities: from level 1 where the components of the problem always fall on 15/30/45/00 times, to level 4 which is completely random. Set B will always set problems where the difference is less than an hour and the hour boundary is crossed. Time Difference Problems - Set C and Set D (2 x Word docs) Time Difference Problems - Set C ANSWERS and Set D ANSWERS (2 x Word docs) A printable set of duration questions, with a running and fitness theme, for follow-up work, in class, as an assessment task, or as homework. Answers are on separate sheets.
