Planning and preparation
1(a) Explain the relevance of two challenges you will face in this single performance.
4 marks
Challenge 1 – I struggle to complete my handstand into forward roll. On
occasion it looks very good but sometimes I get stuck in the handstand and can’t
overbalance into the roll. This means I can’t move smoothly into the approach to
my vault from where I want so I have to adjust my run up to get the correct
height to land safely so the sequence is not fluent.
Challenge 2 – I have difficulty remembering what comes next in my sequence
and sometimes I have to pause before going into the next move and this makes
my sequence look untidy and I will get fewer marks.
1(b) Identify the actions you will take to meet each of the challenges in 1a. Explain why
these actions are appropriate.
4 marks
Challenge 1 I am going to practise the handstand forward roll in isolation and
then add in the vault after it. By repeating the handstand on its own and falling
over onto a crash mat I will become used to the overbalance and be able to
complete it in the performance. Repeating this will mean that my brain and body
will work together automatically and I will know that I can complete the
handstand forward roll. Adding in the run up to the vault will mean I will be able
to do it in the sequence and come out of the move in the correct place to start
my run up because I have confidence from getting it right in practice. It will fit
into my sequence smoothly
Challenge 2 – I am going to stick post its up in my room with pictures of each
move in my sequence. I will lay them out in the same pattern as my sequence. I
will study them over and over again each time I go into my room. I will mix them
up and then put them back into the correct order. I will write out my sequence
and make comments on how each move goes after every practice session.
Evaluation
3(a) Analyse the effectiveness of your preparation for the two challenges explained in
1(a).
6 marks
Challenge 1- My performance was good. My handstand forward roll went well. I
held my handstand very still and extended and came down into my roll. I was in
the right starting place for my run up to the vault. I got my strides correct and
hit the springboard powerfully getting height to land safely
Challenge 2 –The pattern of post its in my room got stuck in my head. I could
picture each one and knew exactly what came next. When I was practising I
still forgot but putting up different colours helped me get the sequence in the
right order. When I finished the round off I could see in my mind the pink post
it with the backward roll on it so I knew how to position my body correctly and
there was no pause in my routine. I made the order of the post its pink, yellow,

blue so this meant I had labelled my moves pink, yellow and blue in my head and
that got the whole sequence into my head and for my performance I did not
forget what came next and managed to link the moves together smoothly
3(b) Evaluate at least one strength of, and at least one area for development from, your
performance.
6 marks
Strength – my neck spring over the vault was good. Because I got the run up I
hit the springboard right on the mark, that meant I could get plenty height and
get my hands and neck on to the box. My speed combined with the height kept
me going forward so that when I flung my hips I could keep my legs and feet
together and fully extended so that the whole action looked very accurate and
controlled. The height meant my landing was perfect. I landed with my feet
together, held the spot with no stumble and went smoothly into balance on the
bar. The good landing meant there was no adjustment necessary so the
sequence was fluent.
Area for development – my balance on the bar was poor. Lack of body tension
meant that it looked floppy and I couldn’t hold my body straight which meant
that it was not controlled and looked untidy.
When I tried to do the upward circle on the bar I didn’t pull my body close
enough to the bar and had to put my feet down and jump up again. The second
attempt was successful but it meant that the overall performance was spoiled.
The teacher said that she had to take marks off for this error because it
meant that I wasn’t consistently fluent and controlled throughout the
performance.
