The Higher Education Academy
• Originally the Learning and Teaching
Support Network (LTSN)
• Founded in Jan 2000 in UK
• Funded by HEFC
• A network of 24 subject centres (SCs),
and a central function in York
• Each SC is based at a University or
College around the UK
• Discipline-based NOT area-based

The Higher Education Academy
• Its aims:
– To support academic practice in teaching with the aim
of enhancing the learning experience of students by:
• Coordinating networks of practitioners
• Disseminating innovation and good practice in learning,
teaching and assessment
• Creating a forum to discuss issues relevant to education in all
disciplines, for the exchange of information, ideas and
research findings of developments
– To fund us to provide resources for our community,

• The UK Centre for Materials Education
(UKCME) is one of the 24 subject centres
• We have our own remit:
“The UK Centre for Materials Education exists
to support and promote high quality education
in Materials and related disciplines, by
encouraging and coordinating the
development and adoption of effective
practices in learning, teaching and
assessment.”

• Strategic Aims:
– Engage in and collate research relevant to materials education
– Help support change in practice in learning and teaching
– Disseminate good practice and innovation in learning and
teaching
– Provide coordination and support to build and sustain networks
within materials education community
– Be the primary information and advice resource on a
national basis for all staff involved in learning and teaching
in materials science
– Work with institutions to increase the quality and quantity of
students applying to study in materials disciplines
