ZPS Math Department Mathematics Workshop for P1 and P2 Parents(2016) How to teach Mathematical concepts in a fun and meaningful way? Team members: Mrs Raj, Mdm Suriana & Mrs Seah ZPS Math Department Our Department’s Focus Love Math Love Learning Math ZPS Math Department Objective of the workshop: To share strategies and skills to teach Math concepts in a fun and meaningful way ZPS Math Department Aims of the workshop: Participants will be able to: • scaffold their children in the learning of Mathematical concepts • Use manipulatives (materials) to concretise concepts • Use number bonds to solve Mathematical problems ZPS Math Department Overview of the workshop 1) Number Bonds 4) Useful Tips 2) Making Groups 3) More or Less ZPS Math 1) Number Department Bonds What is a number bond? • a mental picture of the relationship between a number and the parts that combine to make it. • sometimes called an addition fact, it is a simple addition sum which has become so familiar that a child can recognise it and complete it almost instantly Number Bond Chart whole part part Number Bond Chart W P P Number Bond Charts whole part part part part whole part whole part part part whole Let’s complete the addition equation below 7 4 + 3 = ____ P P W W 4 P 3 P 7 Let’s complete the subtraction equation… 3 7 – 4 = ____ W P P W 4 P 3 P 7 Relating Math to Real Life • Use the following objects which can be found at home to form Number Bonds: Rubber bands Egg trays Ice-cream sticks Bottle caps Number Bonds Number bonds can help… make meaning and solve story sums Let’s solve the story sum together… Mary has 25 pencils. Lily has 4 pencils. How many pencils do they have together? W = P P W They have ______ pencils altogether. P P Let’s solve the story sum together… John has 30 stickers. He gives his friend 10 stickers. How many stickers does he have left? W = W P P P He has______ stickers left. P ZPS 2) Math Making Department Groups How many fish are there altogether? We can make groups of 10 first. 10 and 4 make 14 ZPS Making Math Department Groups How many cats are there? ________ and _________ make ______ Making Groups How many cats are there? 10 16 6 ________ and _________ make ______ Let’s solve story sum together… ZPSthe Math Department How many cakes are there? ________ and _________ make ______ Addition ZPS Math andDepartment Subtraction How many cakes are there? 10 18 8 ________ and _________ make ______ Addition and Subtraction We can also add using algorithm or the place value chart. T O 25 + 4 = ____ 2 5 + 4 Step 1: Add the ones 9 2 5+4=9 Step 2: Add the tens 2+0=2 Make sure the alignment of the ones and tens are correct. Addition and Subtraction Another example 25 + 45 = Step 1: Add the ones 5 + 5 = 10 Step 2: Regroup 10 ones into 1 ten and 0 one. Step 3: Add the tens 1+2+4=7 T 1 2 + 4 7 O 5 5 0 Do not use words like “borrow” when doing the regrouping. Addition and Subtraction An example of Subtraction 46 - 29 = Step 1: Regroup 4 tens 6 ones into 3 tens 16 ones Step 2: 16 – 9 = 7 Step 3: Subtract the tens 3–2=1 T O 3 4 16 - 2 9 1 7 Use terms like “regrouping” and “renaming”. Relating Math to Real Life Work Your Brains! Using Mental Calculations Using car licence plate number. Add first 2 digits (7 + 4 = 11) Add last 2 digits (8 + 4 = 12) Add 11 and 12 to get the sum of the 4 digits. ZPS Math 3) More Department or Less Which is more? Which is less? How many more? How many less? ZPS Math More Department or Less? How best can we represent this information to find out which shape is more or fewer? How many more or fewer? ZPS Math More Department or Less? Use a grid like this… ZPS Math MoreDepartment or Less? 5 Number Line ZPS Math Number Department Line Use the Number Line to find out the following … a) 2 more than 5 b) 2 less than 8 Relating Math to Real Life Using fruits in the supermarket to compare numbers. Are there more pineapples or apples? Are there fewer oranges or grapes? Relating Math to Real Life Which is more? Which is less? A sack of rice A packet of flour Relating Math to Real Life Which coin is heavier? Comparing mass ZPS Math Department 4) Useful tips Tips to support your child’s learning of Math ZPS ZPSMath MathDepartment Department Did you know? Your presence and involvement in your child’s learning process will encourage and support your child in his/her learning. ZPS Here Math are Department some tips… • Create a homework routine - Work out a study timetable - Encourage him/her to complete his/her homework daily • Focus on effort, not mistakes - Let your child know that you recognise the effort he/she is putting into the assignments. Relating ZPS Math MathDepartment to Real Life Use readily available manipulatives • For Counting Coins, Colour Pencils Sweets, chocolates, Macaroni Relating ZPS Math MathDepartment to Real Life Use readily available manipulatives like • For Comparing numbers/ Number bonds Toys Eg: Lego Blocks, Snake and Ladder board game Helping Your Child… • Play Math Games / • Read Storybooks relating to Mathematics For example: iPad apps – KGMATH, Ace Kids Math Games HD Free Lite and other apps ZPS Online Math Resources Department • http://nlvm.usu.edu/ • http://nrich.maths.org/public • http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/ websites/4_11/site/numeracy.shtml • http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=_eFnzNw10Qc&feature=related Helping Your Child ZPS Math Department ZPS Math Department Time- Filler slides ZPS Math Department Patterns What comes next? ? 1 2 3 1 2 3 ? 1 2 1 2 2 ZPS Math Department Try these out ? ?
