Filip Ilijevski
Surprises,
Ontario Players’
Well
Performances at
the Butterfly
2014 Canadian
Junior and Cadet
Open
The Butterfly 2014 Canadian Junior and Cadet Open was hosted in Markham, Ontario by
CCTTA on April 10th to April 13th. The tournament saw players from all four corners of the globe,
from Australia to Egypt to our very own Canadian Ontario players, whose performances were
met with great results.
Junior Boys’ Singles & Cadet Boys’ Singles
Ontario player, Filip Ilijevski surprised all during the group stages of the 2014 Canadian Junior
and Cadet Open, dropping only 2 games in his group and beating Australia's Erny Tsao, the
American Theodore Tran and his Canadian comrade Michael Luo. Nonetheless, Ilijevski was
able to use that momentum in the group stages to carry himself to an honorable 3rd place in the
Junior Boys Singles.
Alexander Moran, however, faced much stiffer competition, as he, along with Canadian Antoine
Bernadet and American Allen Wang all finished with two wins each. Through determination of
game ratio, Alex Wang was able to beat out the 2nd place Moran and 3rd place Bernadet.
Unfortunately, on the way to his bronze medal, Ilijevski took out Moran during the rounds by 4-3.
Jeremy Hazin performed well in Cadet Boys Singles reaching to semi-finals before losing out to
Kanak Jha (USA) by 0-3. Ultimately, American player Kanak Jha, took home both titles for
Cadet Boys' Singles and Junior Boys' Singles events.
Junior Girls’ Singles and
Cadet Girls’ Singles
On the girls’ side, American
players dominated the scene.
Anqi Luo fared well during the
Junior Girls Singles, storming
her way to semi-finals before
stopped by American Angela
Guan with score of (6-11, 115,5-11,12-14,3-11). Justina
Yeung also performed well,
making her way to quarter
finals at the Cadet Girls
Singles before defeated by Li
Joy (USA). Sibling to Kanak
Jha, Prachi Jha of USA, became the winner of Junior Girls Singles event.
Team Events
Unfortunately, our Canadian teams were no match for the domination of the US teams. Canada
A consisting of Bryan Ho and Jeremy Hazin received 2nd in Cadet Boys. In Junior Boys Teams,
Canadian team consisting of all Ontario players, Moran Alexander, Ilijevski Filip and Guo Moxi
was defeated during the semi-finals by the American players Chodri Kunal and Jha
Kanak.
Special thank you goes to Hon Michael Chan, Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport in
attending the event.
