WAKE COUNTY MAN WINS HALF A MILLION ON INSTANT
SCRATCH-OFF GAME
-Lenoir County Man Wins $329,629 Playing “Carolina Cash 5”-Beaufort County Man Says “Wooooooo!” After Winning $100,000RALEIGH-Joseph Howard Jr. of Knightdale says he usually doesn’t scratch off his lottery tickets on the
same day he buys them, but last week decided to make an exception and see if he’d won anything on the
two “$500,000 Jackpot” tickets he’d bought. The first ticket he scratched revealed a $25 win, while the
second made him call over his wife to confirm what he was seeing.
Howard says he told his wife to bring her glasses and take a look at the ticket, and that she did a little
dance of joy when they realized that the ticket was worth the top prize of $500,000!
Howard bought his winning ticket, which was worth $340,003 after taxes, at Food Lion on Fifth Avenue in
Garner. He says he is still thinking about what to do with his winnings, but that even with his big win he
plans to keep taking his lunch to work.
James Stroud says it was a breathtaking experience to realize he’d won $329,629 playing “Carolina Cash
5.” The LaGrange man picked his own numbers for the Dec. 9 drawing and matched all five numbers
drawn.
Stroud says he will use his winnings, which were $224,148 after taxes, to pay off his house and take a
cruise. He also plans to give some money to his church and put the rest in savings. He purchased his
winning ticket at Hasty Mart on Highway 70 West in LaGrange.
Larry Tetterton of Washington had reason to exclaim “Wooooooo!” last week. He bought one of the Ric
Flair-themed instant scratch-off tickets and won the top prize of $100,000!
Tetterton says when he bought the “Wooooooo!” ticket he thought maybe he’d win $15 or $20. Instead,
he won $100,000 and received $68,002 after taxes. Tetterton purchased his winning ticket at Handy Mart
#30 on River Road in Washington.
One ticket in the Dec. 15 “Carolina Cash 5” drawing matched all five numbers drawn and is worth
$67,410. The ticket was sold at Charlotte Fast Mart on Tom Hunter Road in Charlotte. Winner details are

In last night’s Powerball drawing, two tickets sold in North Carolina matched four out of five white balls
plus the Powerball. One of the tickets was Power Played and is worth $50,000 since the Power Play
multiplier was five. This ticket was sold at Murphy USA on Parkway Village Circle in Winston-Salem.
The other ticket that matched four out of five balls plus the Powerball was not Power Played and is worth
$10,000. This ticket was sold at Food Lion on Falls of Neuse Road in Raleigh.
A total of 35,481 North Carolina Powerball players won prizes in the Wednesday, Dec. 16 Powerball
drawing ranging from $50,000 to $3 for a total payout in prizes worth $420,814. No one matched all five
white balls plus the Powerball to win the jackpot, so the jackpot for the Saturday, Dec. 19 Powerball
drawing is an estimated $92 million.
The North Carolina Education Lottery (NCEL) has paid out more than $5.3 million total in instant scratchoff ticket prizes since Monday, Dec. 14. Also since Monday, “Carolina Pick 3” players have won nearly
$806,000. “Carolina Pick 4” players have won more than $167,000 and 4 tickets won the top prize of
$5,000. “Carolina Cash 5” players have won nearly $152,000.
