The Leadership Face-Off 2013 Since 2011, 160 secondary school students from 39 schools have tested their leadership mettle in a variety of tasks in The Leadership Face-off. Although only one school wins, all participants emerge victorious in learning new leadership skills, testing their competencies, promoting social causes and having fun learning from and working with students from other schools. This year, Temasek Secondary School, Temasek Junior College and Halogen Foundation are proud to announce our partnership with the National Family Council, nEbO, NTUC Downtown East and E2 Cluster to bring you The Leadership Face-Off 2013. This unique competition seeks to promote family values while developing skills in communication, public speaking, dynamic teamwork and fostering innovation, creativity and confidence. COMPETITION FORMAT Preliminary Round Date 3rd June (Mon), 9:30 am – 2 pm (refreshments will be provided) Venue *SCAPE Warehouse Students will be given a task to be completed within that day. Only the top 12 schools will move on to the Final Round of the competition on 6-8 June. Final Round 6-8 June (Thu-Sat) Reporting Venue Temasek Junior College The 3-day, 2-night finals (residential) will feature different tasks that participants need to accomplish. One assessment tool to be used is the Student Leadership Practices Inventory (SLPI), which is based on The Student Leadership Challenge by Kouzes and Posner. In Support Of General Information 1. Each school may send a team of four students. The team must be composed of all boys or all girls or 2 boys + 2 girls. Only one team per school is allowed. The team members should be Secondary 2 or Secondary 3 students (or equivalent). 2. Schools may replace participants before the start of the preliminary round. However, the gender of the substitute participant must be same. No further substitution is allowed once the Preliminary round has started. Should the team proceed to the Finals, the group must consist of the same 4 members as in the preliminary round. 3. Attire for participants: PE attire or school-based T-shirt and shorts. Additional Information for Final Round 1. Participants will not be working with their school friends for some of the tasks, but with participants from other competing schools. 2. Finalists will be staying at Downtown East from 6-8 June 2013 (Thursday to Saturday). Participants will need to bring clothing and toiletries required for a three-day/two-night stay. 3. Schools will be engaged to go online after the competition period to support their participants on an online survey as part of the task. 4. The participants will use the Student Leadership Practices Inventory as a tool to assess leadership behaviors. This is based on the Student Leadership Challenge by James Kouzes and Barry Posner. FAQs Will the students be allowed to bring money, mobile devices, electronic devices for the competition? Students are allowed to bring their own money, mobile devices and any other electronic devices during the competition. However, the organizers will not be held responsible for any loss of valuables or belongings. Students may not use their own money as part of the cost of the tasks. Are students allowed to bring laptops for the competition? Yes. Participants are encouraged to bring their own video recording devices/ laptops pre-installed with software which they are familiar with. This includes photo/ video-editing software. This is because the teams will have the produce at least one video and one presentation during the competition. Printing facilities will be provided. Are teacher-chaperones to be present during the competition? Teachers from the participating schools may observe the competition, but do not need to be present during the competition. There are sufficient teacher-chaperone organizers present to ensure that the safety and welfare of the students are taken care of. Do the participants have to be student leaders? No. The activities will test general leadership skills and do not require students to hold any position. It is the prerogative of the school to send the most suitable students to the competition. What are the tasks? The tasks are different challenges given to a group to perform. These tasks can range from problem solving, to communication skills and planning, and each group is to perform the tasks within a given time frame. The exact nature of the tasks will only be revealed during the competition itself. What competencies should the participants possess? The participants will be assessed based on the following competencies: • planning • problem-solving • communication • ability to work in teams • ideation & creative thinking As participants will not be working with their fellow school participants for some of the tasks, participants should be able to work in teams quickly. Other skills that participants will find useful to be equipped with include: • ICT Skills (Photo/ Video-editing software, Presentation Software) • Drawing & creative skills How will the sleeping arrangements be made during the Final round? Participants will be roomed according to their gender and the teams that they are in. How are the teams formed in the Final round? For some of the tasks, the participant will be in a team consisting of members from his own school. For the remaining tasks, each participant will be allocated to meet students from other schools in teams of four. After every task, the team composition will be changed. In other words, by the end of the competition, each participant would have been in three teams and have met 2 x 3 students from other schools.
