Baking Powder vs Baking Soda
Use this as your TITLE in your notebook
“I wonder” statements…..
• Write down three I wonder statements in your notebook
about what you think the difference is between the two of
them when used in cooking.
• Now look at each product and their ingredients (chemical
composition). Document in your notebook which each one is
made of in chart format ( like the below).

Inquiry….
• Today you will be making homemade chocolate chip cookies.
One team will be using baking powder and one team will be
using baking soda.
• As a team come up with what you think will happen to the
cookies using the product that has been chosen for you.
• You are making a hypothesis!
• Write down the recipe in your LNB for the all time best
chocolate chip cookie recipe that has been in my family for
over 40 years!
Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

½ Cup butter flavored shortening
¾ Cup sugar
¼ Cup brown Sugar
1 egg
¾ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon soda or powder (depending on your group)
1 teaspoon vanilla
Mix all of these together well
1 Cup all purpose flour
1 Cup chocolate chips
Hand mix all of these together
• Use spoon to scoop out onto cookie sheet and bake @375 degrees
until golden brown.
Observations?
• Document in your lab notebook any visual observations you
make about your cookies during bake time.
• Document any visual observations about your cookies after
bake time. Visually describe the differences you SEE between
each cookie type. Are there any?
• Taste test – Now try each cookie type. Are there any tastable
differences? Which one do you like best and why?
Research Project and Present
• You may choose either a board or a powerpoint/google slide to
present your findings.
• Glue into your notebook the parameters of the research project
(that way you won’t loose them and you know what your doing) if
you prefer to make a pocket folder that is fine too!
• Presentations are DUE to present to the class on August 24th!
