4th Annual Jane Davidson Forum on Play: Learning through play in our media-saturated age Keynote speaker: Diane Levin, Beyond Remote-Controlled Childhood: Teaching Young Children in the Media Age October 26, 2013. 8:30am-1:00pm UD Laboratory Preschool 459 Wyoming Road Newark, Delaware The University of Delaware Laboratory Preschool, in partnership with the Delaware Institute for Excellence in Early Childhood (DIEEC), will host the fourth annual Jane Davidson Forum on Play on Saturday, October 26, 2013. The Play Forum is held each year to honor Jane I. Davidson, former UD Laboratory Preschool Master Teacher and child advocate and to support early childhood educators in their work to provide play-based learning opportunities that reflect the child-centered and social justice principles that Jane stood for. This year’s theme calls attention to the challenges and possibilities that exist in teaching and raising young children in an age in which media are so much a part of our daily lives. Possible topics to be explored might include: teaching productive play skills, adults learning to play in order to support children’s play, considering media characters and themes in children’s play, thinking about children’s technology play, play and the Common Core, and explaining to others why play matters. Audiences will include in-service and pre-service teachers of young children from birth through age 8, administrators of programs for young children, teacher educators and professional development providers in early childhood and families of young children. Sessions will be one hour in length. Selection criteria for sessions relevance to the Play Forum goals and theme content that reflects current knowledge and best practices in the field and/or engages participants in critical thinking about practice format that actively and productively involves participants in learning. In addition, we will attempt to provide a variety of topics addressing a range of audiences in order to serve the needs and interests of all attendees. Proposals must follow the format provided on the following pages. All proposals must be received by August 19, 2013.
