FOCUS
• The Scarlet Letter touches on several very
pertinent topics which are still prevalent in
society today, one of the topics is:

Perception and Sexism: female archetypes and its origins
from religion, and its impact on children and morals.
GROUPINGS
• Groups of 4
• Every individual needs to pull their weight (equal level of
work must be assigned)-Designation of responsibilities must
be given to me and one kept for the group.
• Grades will be assigned on a daily basis to determine
individual and group efforts.
• If a member is not contributing to the project, excessively
absent or another just cause group members may come to me
regarding having a member removed from a group and placed
in a solo situation. (If you do not inform me of a problem I will
assume that everyone has contributed equally)

Perception and Sexism in The Scarlet Letter
• Find 3 examples of perception and sexism
regarding your assigned character in the
scarlet letter.
• For each example:
» Identify the excerpt from The Scarlet Letter . Discuss the
rhetorical device(s) is/are being used in the example.
» For each determine what perceptions does this character hold.
What is it saying about the portrayal of women in this time
period?
» Determine the impact on the society in the novel and how
morals (lessons learned) are derived from this example. (What
is being taught or what lessons are being learned?)
Modern Day Perception and Sexism
• Focus on one perception held in society that is
embedded in sexist beliefs or discrimination.
• For the example:
» Find an article that discusses the topic that you
want to focus on.
» Find a visual (video) that you will utilize to drive
home your point. You must tie it to what the
article focuses on and the perception that is
held by society that is perceived as sexist or
discriminatory.
Article
• Must touch on a topic today that may be perceived as sexist and
discriminatory that mirrors some of the issues in The Scarlet Letter.
• The article must be informative. Its sole purpose is to add clarity to
the topic for some individuals that may not be familiar with it.
• Cannot exceed 2 pages (Take pieces from a larger article that are
pertinent, if necessary)
• There must be discussion questions that are based on the articles
that you will ask your classmates to engage them in discussion on
the topic.
• The questions should focus on the varying perceptions people may
have, societies views and attitudes, where do these perceptions
come from? etc. . .
• Must have 3-4 analytical questions for the article.
• Must print out an article for each person in the class to have that is
not in your group (20)

Must be embedded in PowerPoint and brought in on jump drive. (CANNOT USE
HYPERLINKED URL’S)
Must create 3-4 analytical questions for the class to discuss that deal with:
» Rhetorical devices used
» Discuss the perceptions or misperceptions in the video
» Discuss how morals (lessons learned) are derived from this
example. (What is being taught or what lessons are being
learned?)
» How does it connect to The Scarlet Letter
Must be prepared to elaborate on the video after discussion questions are
answered.
