Soccer Names Two to Coaching Staff
Prep soccer head coach Joe Coyle has announced two additions to the coaching staff: Jack
ONeill ’90 has moved from freshman coach to assistant varsity coach and Joe Diviny ’76 has
been named the new freshman coach.
ONeill, who joins Mike Fanning ’94 and Chris McPeak ’79 on the varsity staff, has extensive
playing experience. At the Prep he was a 3-year Varsity starter and captain, a 2-time 1st Team
All-Catholic. He played at LaSalle University and then for the top clubs in our area at the time,
UGH and Ukranian Nationals. His coaching experience is extensive at Lighthouse SC. Since 2006
he has coached several of the most successful teams at Lighthouse and sent dozens of players
to top soccer programs in the area. Coach ONeill took over the Prep freshmen team in 2014 and
immediately found success with his high quality training and tactical understanding of the
game. Now he will bring all of that to the Varsity level.
“Jack and I have been friends since college. I have known his family for 25+ years and I am very
excited to bring him up to the Varsity squad because I know that we will do great things
together,” says Coyle.
Diviny is considered by many to be one of the top soccer players to ever wear the crimson and
grey. A four-year varsity player and a four-year 1st team All-Catholic, Diviny was also an allstate selection in 1974 and 1975 and a regional all-American in 1974. After leaving the Prep he
played both at Yale University and at LaSalle College. Diviny was the longest tenured soccer
coach in the Philadelphia Public League, serving as head coach at Martin Luther King and
Mastbaum. Mr. Diviny has represented the PPL in the Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association
and served as a past President of the association. Coach Diviny holds numerous advanced
coaching certificates and brings decades of playing and coaching experience to our program.
“When I took the reins of this program there were several staffing decisions that needed to be
made,” says Coyle. “My first priority was to bring in the best coaches possible, but it was
equally important for me to 'keep it in the family.' I wanted to fill our staff with Prep Soccer
alum. By bringing Joe Diviny onto our staff, we have satisfied both criteria, a top notch coach
and a former player.”
