Gathering Data – Emotional Factor Describe two different methods that could be used to collect information about the potential impact of emotional factors on performance Performance Profiling Wheel A method I used to gather data on emotional factors was a performance-profiling wheel. The performanceprofiling wheel is a sheet of paper with a circle on it. The circle was divided into 6 segments and within each segment there were ten rows. Each segment in the circle was given an emotional factor that I consider important in my activity as a heading. This included factors such as anger, fear and happiness (confidence). I then consider a model performer and how effectively they cope with these emotional factors within my sport. For each of the emotional factors I rated the model performer from 1-10 with 1 being the weakest and 10 the best. I marked this on the profiling wheel by colouring in the rows using a yellow pen up to the score that I had given the model performer. E.g. If I felt the model performer was 8 out of 10 for how they deal with anger then I coloured rows 1-8 in yellow in the anger segment of the wheel. I then rated my own performance for each of the emotional factors from 1-10. I marked this on the profiling wheel by using a blue pen and colouring in the rows in the correct segment. E.g. If I felt that I was 6 out of 10 for how I deal with anger I coloured in rows 1-6 of the anger segment. When doing this I had to colour over some of the yellow colour that I had completed for the model performer. Sports Emotion Questionnaire A method I used to gather data on emotional factors was the Sport Emotion Questionnaire. In this questionnaire were a list of words that describe a range of feelings that sports performers may feel. These include words such as Uneasy, Irritated, Pleased, and Nervous. These words were down the left hand side of the sheet. Along the top of the questionnaire were the headings Not at all, A little, Moderately, Quite a bit & Extremely. Across from each word were the numbers 0-4. These numbers represented how much of the feeling I felt. 0= Not at all, 1= A little, 2= Moderately, 3=Quite a bit, 4= extremely. To complete the questionnaire I had to rate how much of each feeling I felt in relation to an upcoming performance. I completed this for each word on the questionnaire. Select one method used to gather data on the Emotional factor. Explain why this is an effective way to gather data on the mental factor. Completing the performance-profiling wheel to gather data on the emotional factor was effective because the performance-profiling wheel involves self-reflection where I judge my ability to manage my emotions. This is an effective method of gathering data on my performance within this factor as I am the only person who knows exactly the emotions that I feel during a performance. As long as I am honest when completing the performanceprofiling wheel this will provide me with a reliable reflection of my performance. This is a valid method of gathering data as the performer selects the emotional factors to gather data on. This means that they are likely to have a good knowledge of the factor and therefore the information collected is likely to be useful in identifying accurately the performers strengths and weaknesses. This method of gathering data is practicable as it takes relatively little time to complete as there is a template that is used and it only involves colouring in the sections of the wheel. In addition it can be completed away from the training environment. This means that it does not take time away from practice sessions which performer would be reluctant to do. Finally when using this approach you are comparing your performance within a range of emotional factors to that of a model performer. Through doing this you will be able to identify what emotional factors are strengths compared to a model performer and what are areas that require development. Through identifying these strengths and weaknesses you will be able to plan an effective development programme to develop your performance.
