I’m sure that our readers will have mixed feelings about the recent budget handed down by Treasurer Hockey. Isuzu customers are certainly a diverse bunch – from the owner driver or tradie running a single vehicle, to a fleet manager or company owner responsible for hundreds of trucks. Given the varied circumstances some readers will be happier than others. With plenty of leaks or ‘softeners’ being aired in the lead-up, there were probably not too many surprises in the end. One initiative that not many will argue against is the Government’s proposed road infrastructure investment. The vast geographic nature of this country coupled with its relatively sparse population, means Australia is very dependent on a strong road network for continued economic prosperity. What will hurt in achieving better infrastructure though is the planned increase of the fuel levy. There’ll be no escaping this every time you fill up your truck. Now for some cheerful news. In this edition of Truck Power, we’re giving owners the chance to win a tablet of their choice to the value of $1,000. See the next page for full details and conditions. If you would prefer to receive your edition of Truck Power via email as a .pdf file, send us an email as per the directions, and be in the running to win this great prize. To ease the budgetary pain, we’ve teamed up with Michelin to promote their offer to Isuzu truck owners of $50 off the price of selected new Michelin tyres - please see the insert for full details. This promotion is also timely given the feature in this edition on tyre safety and winter weather looming. In this edition we bring you more details of Isuzu’s newest model variant, the FYJ 2000 8x4 Auto, it’s a model that’s been optimised to suit the specific requirements of agitator work. It also won ‘Truck of the Show’ at the recent International Truck Trailer and Equipment Show (ITTES) held in Melbourne. In our operator stories we serve up a diverse range of articles beginning with a piece about N Series food trucks – the variety and quality of food available from some of these trucks is amazing as you’ll see. We then travel to Tasmania to learn about the state’s first FY Series which is already proving a valuable acquisition for leading environmental services provider, Veolia. Australian warehousing has for many years relied on the humble forklift to keep goods racked and stacked, when there’s a breakdown, work can literally come to a standstill. This is where Forks ‘4’ U can help. The company runs an NQR 450 set-up as a mobile service unit, and offers a fast breakdown service. The final of our feature stories takes a look at two new FXLs that have been put into service with S & J Australian Scrap Tyre Disposals. The new trucks are the latest in a long line of Isuzus that the company uses to haul used tyres. Also of note in this edition is a piece detailing the latest trends and advancements in vehicle telematics systems. The use of telematics is sure to grow rapidly in coming years and the article explores some of the benefits the technology can deliver. Of course, this Autumn issue also features also features all your other Truck Power regular segments. We hope you enjoy the edition. The optimised FYJ 2000 8x4 Auto features a shortened wheelbase (713 mm shorter than Medium wheelbase FYJ 2000) which offers users a significant tare weight reduction. Read more about this model on page 6. Representing Isuzu’s alternative fuel range were two low emission CNG (Compressed Natural Gas)-powered models, the NLR 200 CNG and FSR 850 CNG. This year’s ITTES also saw the official launch of the Isuzu Telematics programs, ‘Isuzu Telematics Connect’ and ‘Isuzu Telematics Connect Plus’. Truck show attendees were able to see live demonstrations of this technology on the Isuzu Trucks’ stand, seeing firsthand how the real-time vehicle tracking and monitoring systems can improve operating efficiencies and reduce overall costs. Complementing the display was IAL’s recentlyrestored 1979 SBR 422 heritage truck, in its first official public viewing, which garnered widespread interest from true Isuzu fans. Also on show was a selection of Isuzu parts and accessories, including Isuzu fluid products and an NQR 450 kitted out in the latest range of Isuzu accessories. An industrial engines display also alerted attendees to the brand’s broad range of offhighway engines. NEWS ISUZU LEADS THE WAY WITH NEW TELEMATICS PROGRAM 5 Isuzu Trucks set a new industry benchmark with the official launch of Isuzu Telematics in early April. A groundbreaking vehicle management tool, Isuzu Telematics delivers operational ‘visibility’ on the road − letting you know about the day-to-day health, security, fleet productivity, and truck efficiency of your fleet in ‘real time’. Mileage monitoring and automatic service alerts is another key feature of Isuzu Telematics, allowing for easy reconciliation of realistic running costs, general fleet efficiency, and easy maintenance and service scheduling. Isuzu Telematics offers users two systems: ‘Isuzu Telematics Connect’ and ‘Isuzu Telematics Connect Plus’, and each provide an extensive range of realtime vehicle tracking and monitoring systems. Driver safety is taken care of with a driver assistance button, theft alert, and soon-to-be-released two-way driver messaging component. IAL Marketing Manager Jeff Birdseye believes Isuzu Telematics will change the face of fleet management and driver efficiency in the years ahead. “We know we’re raising the bar with this new program. With Isuzu Telematics in play we’re going to see safer truck drivers on the road, and businesses The genuine telematics solution has been developed in partnership with Isuzu, designed in Australia for Australian conditions, and while the technology might be complex, installation of the compact telematics modules is simple and non-invasive to existing vehicle hardware. Installation of the ‘Isuzu Telematics Connect’ module is also possible on older model Isuzu trucks, and even trucks from other brands, allowing the owner full visibility of their entire fleet regardless of truck type or age. For more information on the benefits of Isuzu Telematics, talk to your local Isuzu truck dealer. www.isuzu.com.au Use of satellites through the Global Positioning System (GPS) offers 24/7 vehicle tracking, journey playback, and arrival notification, which can be accessed as it’s happening, from any internetenabled device in the world. will benefit long-term from lower, overall fleet operating costs and improved service efficiencies,” Mr Birdseye said. 6 NEW RELEASES ISUZU’S OPTIMISED FY MODEL MIXING IT WITH THE BEST Isuzu Australia Limited’s (IAL) newly released FYJ 2000 8x4 Auto, with optimised specification to suit agitator applications, has received the nod from a panel of industry experts after being awarded ‘Truck of the Show’ at the 2014 Melbourne International Truck Trailer and Equipment Show (ITTES). W hile models in the existing FY twin steer axle line-up have already proved popular, and have been taken up in encouraging numbers by concreting fleets in cities and regional areas, some customers had some more specific requirements which IAL has now fulfilled. The optimised FYJ 2000 8x4 Auto features a shortened wheelbase (713 mm shorter than the existing medium wheelbase FYJ 2000), which when combined with careful re-arrangement of chassis-mounted components such as air tanks and batteries, offers users a significant tare weight reduction. The smaller platform aids manoeuvrability, with the new model boasting a calculated turning circle of under 17.5 m, greatly aiding its use in high-density urban conditions. TRUCKPOWER AUTUMN 2014 Also assisting weight reduction are lightweight Alcoa alloy wheels and specially selected Yokohama tyres in the ubiquitous 11R22.5 size favoured in agitator applications. The fuel tank for the model has been reviewed and made more compact, as urban-type environments and the back-to-base nature of agitator works means the larger 400 litre tanks are not required. The concrete industry requirement to avoid stirring up dust on building sites was met by fitting a vertical exhaust stack, using mainly existing Isuzu parts from other models. While this added a little weight, the FYJ’s simple Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC) exhaust system could be modified quite easily, when compared with the strictly controlled SCR or particulate filter systems on competitor trucks. The enhanced FYJ 2000 8x4 impressed trade and public attendees alike at the recent Melbourne International, Truck, Trailer and Show (ITTES), picking up the ‘Truck of the Show’ award. The Isuzu FYJ “ticked all of the boxes” in its demonstrated innovation in responding to specific industry needs, according to the judging panel. IAL Chief Engineer, Product Strategy, Simon Humphries, says the ITTES award offers a positive indication the FYJ 2000 enhancements will enable greater efficiencies for customers and the wider industry. “It’s in keeping with Isuzu’s philosophy of continual improvement that we’ve further refined our FY model range with this latest release. “The lower tare weight has been achieved without impacting power or performance, allowing customers greater flexibility and enhanced payload-bearing potential,” Mr Humphries said. Other acknowledged performance features of the FYJ 2000 were retained during the specification optimisation, including a 6-speed automatic Allison HD 4430 series transmission, Hendrickson HAS461 airbag rear suspension and standard driver controlled differential cross locks to assist in low traction conditions on construction sites. Safety features include anti-lock braking system (ABS), ECE-R29-compliant cab, ECE-R93-compliant Front Underrun Protection Device (FUPD), driver’s SRS airbag and ISRI 6860 air suspension driver’s seat with seatbelt pretensioner. As with all of the FY Series range, drivers are well catered for in the FYJ 2000 8x4 Auto. The FY Series cab is already widely regarded as one of the best available in terms of ease of access, low noise levels, excellent visibility, comfort and driver appointments, while the standard Digital Audio Visual Entertainment (DAVE) system with 15.7 cm touch screen, CD/DVD player, Digital radio, AM/ FM tuner, Bluetooth phone connection and audio streaming, combined with voice commands is a class-leading system. The DAVE unit can incorporate optional* satellite navigation, tyre pressure monitoring system and up to four video cameras to allow the driver to monitor vehicle operation. *Available at additional cost 7 (L - R) IAL Chief Engineer, Product Strategy SImon Humphries and Marketing Manager Jeff Birdseye with the ITTES award for ‘Truck of the Show’. www.isuzu.com.au 8 CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF TRUCK POWER 2014 marks 20 years since our first edition of Truck Power hit the desks and dashboards of our readers back in March of 1994. The food truck phenomenon has well and truly arrived in Australia, bringing with it a mind-boggling assortment of colourful food trucks touting delicious cuisines from all corners of the globe. Truck Power heads outs on the road with two food truckers serving gourmet fare to Melbourne’s hungry hoardes, and discovers why the Isuzu N series is perfectly suited to keeping these mobile eateries on the move. www.isuzu.com.au HOW TO SCAN ISUZU JOINS THE FOOD TRUCK CRAZE 10 FEATURE Jim White with his southern-inspired food truck – Smokin’ Barrys. HOLY SMOKE! ISUZU GOES SOUTHERN STYLE With a motto like “You don’t need teeth to eat our meat!” it’s hard to ignore Smokin’ Barrys, one of the latest players in the Melbourne food truck scene. Built on an Isuzu NNR 200 platform, the mobile southern style barbeque kitchen provides a large selection of mouth-watering meats basted in special sauces and marinades, and then cooked for over 16 hours. “In the past I used to tow a mobile kitchen trailer with my Isuzu D-Max Ute, however I needed a bigger vehicle to keep up with the expansion of the business.” In addition to visiting Melbourne’s suburbs, Smokin’ Barrys has also been a festival favourite since its inception in late 2011 and has attended events such as Springfest, Midsumma and Moomba. TRUCKPOWER AUTUMN 2014 Smokin’ Barrys was developed by business owner, Jim White, who travelled to Memphis, USA and learnt how to cook in the traditional southern style from the masters. Jim plans to develop his business which currently has two full-time employees and eight part-time employees, and start a franchise which will exclusively use Isuzu trucks. As part of his training, he also attended one of the largest barbeque competitions – Memphis in May’s World Championship Barbeque Cooking Contest. Jim said that when looking for a truck model to suit his franchise kitchen business, he found the NNR 200 to be the right fit for the mobile kitchen body design. Jim said he came up with the mobile kitchen idea while watching American TV. “Smokin’ Barrys is one of the only mobile kitchens of its sort in Victoria as most food trucks offer more traditional fast food options such as burgers and Asian cuisine,” Jim said. “I want to provide a unique and authentic experience for my customers and the NNR 200 allows me to do so wherever we go. “The size of my new truck is ideal for my business as it is small enough to be driven on a car licence,” he said. “It has a great turning circle and is easy to drive through tight residential streets. “With a GVM of 4,500 kg, the NNR 200 can accommodate the mobile kitchen body with ease.” The custom-built van body comprises a fully equipped kitchen which includes a gas fryer, gas oven, cold salad bar, fridge and freezer. The body, which took three months to build, was constructed by Vehicle Mechanical Specialists located in North Geelong. The truck is mainly seen on metro roads but pops up in rural areas every so often depending on the event it will be attending. Since the NNR 200 has been transformed into a mobile kitchen, it has received a lot of positive feedback. The brightly signed truck has images of mouthwatering slow cooked meats splashed all over it and turns heads wherever it goes. According to Jim, he is confident the Isuzu NNR is the right choice for his business and his plans for its future. “I’ve had other Isuzu trucks in the past and they have all been excellent. They are so reliable – you can’t fault them at all,” he said. 11 ISUZU DELIVERS ON RELIABILITY FOR THE CURRY TRUCK Not to be outdone, joining the new wave of gourmet food truckers is Ibi Youssef, a man fiercely passionate about spicy food and proud owner of ‘The Curry Truck’. Ibi’s mobile curry Mecca is a custom-built Isuzu NPR 275, resplendent in its Taj Mahal vinyl wrap, and fitted out as a fully-functioning kitchen by A & B Food Truck Outfitters in Thomastown. Ibi (an ex-mechanic) purchased his NPR as an ex-demo model from Westar Truck Centre, and says he knew he wanted an Isuzu from the get-go. “My first introduction to Isuzu trucks was driving a medium rigid model for Smiths Chips a few years back, it was the first truck I’d ever driven and it was just really, really comfortable to drive. “I have driven other trucks since then, and you just don’t get that ‘truck feeling’ so I am definitely happy with the Isuzu. “I could have easily bought a secondhand truck, but it’s my business and I don’t want it to break down on me halfway to an event with all this food in the back which would cost me money. I’ve got the peace of mind now from knowing I’ve bought the right truck and I’ve done it properly.” Ibi purchased his NPR 275 in December 2012 and had it up and running in time for The Curry Truck’s debut service on April 24, 2013. “The fit-out required reinforcing the chassis, and then basically everything had to be built from the ground up, the flooring, the box on the back which was built from refrigeration panels, all the sinks, plumbing – everything,” Ibi said. “It looks great and I’ve had nothing but compliments. Other food trucks out there are different models and vans - people look at my truck and they know it’s a real truck.” Purchasing an ex-demo model meant low kilometres on the clock and a few extra bells and whistles that add to the truck’s appearance and performance on the road. “It came with all the extras – the bullbar, the towbar, the reversing camera and more. “I also love the cruise control, it means you know you’re doing the speed limit and you can just relax and enjoy the ride. The hill start aid is also very useful, use it and the whole truck locks up really well and doesn’t move backwards an inch.” Talk to Ibi and it’s obvious that running a food truck is a 24-7 labour of love, and not a business venture for the faint-hearted. Operating four nights a week, during all of Melbourne’s changing seasons, any other spare minute is taken up with juggling family life between office lunch runs, special events and preparing the all-important slow cooked sauces for service. “It is hard because I am a one-man operation and I basically do it all myself, all the cooking, all the sauces, all the prep, serving customers, you name it. “We do all of the prep at home in the truck and our sauces can take anywhere from three to six hours to cook. The sauces are chilled until the next day and then we add the chicken and cream when we’re on site to keep everything as fresh as possible.” The Curry Truck can regularly be found serving up piping hot curries to customers at Yarraville Gardens in Melbourne’s Inner West, but it’s the special events where Ibi really puts his mobile kitchen to the test. “We just did an event at Swinburne University in Hawthorn and we had to feed over 300 people in the space of two hours – which is about 20 seconds per person, so that was the craziest thing I’ve done, that and New Year’s Eve at Footscray Park when we just absolutely got slammed,” Ibi said While the seven-day a week lifestyle of a food trucker may not suit everybody, Ibi is adamant that nothing beats following his passion for food. “I’ve been in business most of my life, from commercial cleaning to sales, but with food trucks it’s a different type of competition, it’s actually the friendliest competition that I’ve ever experienced in my life, and we’re all like a family to be honest,” he said. “If people ask me for advice about starting a food truck I always recommend Isuzu trucks, I say ‘first, start off with a real truck − a reliable truck’.” www.isuzu.com.au 12 FEATURE VEOLIA ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES BRINGS FIRST FY 8X4 TO TASMANIA Travel the hills of Tasmania and you just might spot the apple isle’s very first FYH 2000 8x4, purchased in July last year by Veolia Environmental Services. The Veolia team was quick to secure the twin steer model, which they identified for its impressive handling, reliability and suitability to the waste management application. T he FY joins an existing line-up of approximately 35 Isuzu trucks across Tasmania, engaged by Veolia for a variety of environmental solutions in the fields of water, waste management and energy management. Servicing the heavy industry, commercial, government and residential sectors, Veolia Environmental Services has been operating in Tasmania as part of the national group in excess of 35 years and has built a strong reputation for demonstrating industry best practice and helping customers achieve their sustainability goals. “The FY is the only Isuzu eight wheeler truck we’ve got, and it’s the first one of its kind in Tasmania – we were essentially the first ones to buy the twin steer 8x4 right off the production line. “The reliability of the Isuzu is always good and with the new FY model there’s the added advantage that we don’t need to run the AdBlue system with it or any of the complicated emission control systems, and there’s no DPD filter to worry about either, it’s all done via the DOC diesel oxy catalyst exhaust treatment.” TRUCKPOWER AUTUMN 2014 Veolia purchased the FYH 2000 8x4 in late July 2013, and within ten weeks the hooklift unit had been fitted and the fleet’s newest addition was work-ready. Veolia’s Northern Tasmania team currently operates 15 Isuzu trucks across the F Series range, built for hook-lift, rear-lift, pantec and liquid applications. And with 73,000 kilometres already on the clock, the FY is already proving itself a worthy addition to the fleet. Veolia Maintenance Co-ordinator for North Tasmania, James O’Brien, says the twin steer model has provided another quality option into the heavy-duty truck market, and the company has already placed an order for its second FY truck. “We’ve got it out there carrying anything from steel beams to general waste, but it’s primarily used for carting 15 – 40 cubic metre bins from transfer stations and construction sites. It’s also used for green waste pick-ups,” James said. “Up until Isuzu bought out the eight wheeler, they had always been very strong in the smaller model offerings, but now they’ve bought out this new twin steer model they’ll probably grab even more of the market share,” James said. “I’m often in discussion with drivers about the power of our trucks in different applications, and the FY is right up there. I’m happy with the pulling power and now it’s clocked over 60,000 kilometres it’s really starting to improve as is often the case when they get up around that mark, they start to loosen up and perform even better.” The FYH 2000 also provides drivers with the added benefits of the popular Allison HD 4430 6-speed heavy duty full automatic transmission, which makes for less-impact driving on Tassie’s hilly terrain. “There are a lot of challenges here with hills, and the automatic transmission in the FY is great compared to the manual transmission truck we were working with before as we were constantly changing gears,” James said. “The truck also travels on gravel roads, in and out of tip sites and waste transfer stations, and we’ve found the manoeuvrability and turning circle of the truck is ideal for getting into tight spots.” James is an ex truck mechanic and has plenty of positives to report on his experience of maintaining and operating Isuzus over the years. “I’ve been working with Isuzu products for a long time and I know the resale of the Isuzu has always been great compared to any other truck out there, when they do come up they always go for a good dollar,” he said “Maintenance on Isuzu trucks is cost effective and realistic, and in terms of reliability, we drive service to service and the trucks are very rarely off the road and broken down.” 13 Driver/Operator Robert Reid and the FYH 2000 8x4. A leading material handling company with branches in Townsville, Mackay, Cairns and Rockhampton, Forks ‘4’ U purchased a NQR 450 in 2013 and put in the hard yards to develop a fully equipped service vehicle to enable on-the-spot servicing to customers. T he company is now in its 15th year of operation and attributes the continued growth to hard work and a commitment to exceptional customer service. Forks ‘4’ U Director Darren Gardiner says the company’s new NQR 450 shows the industry and its customers they plan to be in operation for the long-haul. “We’re very proud of the new truck; it really is our flagship in terms of service vehicles. We have a lot of people who are interested in just having a look at it to see how we’ve built it. It’s been good for the company as it shows we’re serious about we do and we’ve already secured additional business just from people seeing how well we’ve set it up,” Darren said. The NQR’s custom body was completed in Sydney and took four months, but Darren says the time spent getting the truck right was well worth the wait. “It truly is a mobile workshop. We previously ran with vans, which we still do for inner city jobs, but sometimes we need to have our technician heading out west from Mackay for up to a week at time, and this new truck really gives us the ability to carry enough parts and oils to do that. In the past we’d only be able to operate for about two days’ work away,” he said. The truck’s design was the brainchild of Forks ‘4’ U Service Manager, Tom Edgecombe, who is still pinching himself that his “mobile workshop” is out on the road and vastly improving on the field service team’s operational efficiencies and service delivery. “This body really is one-of-a-kind. Basically I was given free rein to develop the truck I wanted as Darren knew we had to build it. So I sat down, and put all my field service dreams on paper, and it all went from there,” he said “The new truck has two 200 litre clean oil tanks for engine oil and hydraulic oil and both have digital flow meters and pneumatic pumps. It is also fitted with a 300 litre waste oil tank connected to a pneumatic 1-inch Greco diaphragm pump. This has really cut down on our major servicing times, because we can now pump 15 Forks ‘4’ U’s NQR 450 operates as a mobile service workshop. Forks ‘4’ U Road Technician Louis Castro. WORKSHOP ON THE ROAD out the hydraulic tank and pump it all back in, it’s a lot quicker and a lot cleaner. like driving a car and performs really well in those conditions,” Tom said. “In the past we’d have to do a lot of to-ing and fro-ing to the workshop, to drop off the empty oil containers and used parts like hydraulic filters etc. Then we’d have to restock and head back to the customer again, it cost us a lot of downtime and I’d say we’ve now cut our service times down by a third with the new truck,” Tom said. “It’s also got cruise control and you can do things like run your mobile phone through the stereo – all of those features make the day a lot more enjoyable. Some of the sites we service can be a seven-hour drive away, so now it’s not just what’s on the truck which is making work easier and a lot more efficient but the truck itself is making life more comfortable for the road technicians. “The truck has also been great for handling the tough road conditions out west of Mackay as there’s a lot of heavy trucks and mining vehicles getting transported along those roads. The truck handles it all fine, it’s a beautiful truck to drive, it’s “With the NQR we managed to get everything we wanted on there. I’ve been doing field service for 12 years now so it was good to have an opportunity to build my dream service truck, and I couldn’t be happier with it,” he said. Forks ‘4’ U have been so impressed with the performance and comfort of the Isuzu NQR, they have already placed an order for a smaller NPR 275 Premium which will operate from their Townsville branch, allowing for greater flexibility with the region’s servicing requirements. www.isuzu.com.au The NQR is also fully stocked and equipped with a hydraulic hose crimper, a range of fittings and hoses, and a hose saw which enables the mobile technicians to replace hoses on the spot, saving their customers’ time and money in calling external hose doctors to complete the job. 16 FEATURE ISUZU KEEPS THE WHEELS ON SCRAP TYRE DISPOSAL BUSINESS Manufactured from a mixture of fabric, steel, carbon black and rubber, tyres are extremely durable, but if not disposed of correctly, can also be hazardous to the environment. TRUCKPOWER AUTUMN 2014 T o ensure tyres are disposed of in a more environmentally conscious way, Ipswichbased family business, S & J Australian Scrap Tyre Disposals, has been operating a waste tyre collection service since 1991. The S & J business’ team consists of Steve Hayes, his wife Jenny and son Joshua, along with ten professional drivers and an administration worker. Since the business was established, S & J Australian Scrap Tyre Disposals has remained focused on tyre collection. “We are proud to proclaim that the environment has always been our number one priority when running our business,” Mr Hayes said. “All of our Isuzu trucks are heavy rigid models. Most have two rear axles and also tow trailers. S & J Australian Scrap Tyre Disposals has been a loyal Isuzu customer for the past ten years. “Our Isuzus have been designed so that we are able to tow additional trailers while only requiring a heavy rigid license. We can tow up to nine tons in our rear trailers.” “We started with one truck in 1991, now 24 years on we have 10 Isuzu trucks. The oldest truck we have on the fleet was purchased 10 years ago and the most recent is only a couple of months old,” Mr Hayes said. “The oldest truck is an FVR that is still going very strong. We also have NPRs, FVDs, FVMs and the latest acquisition consisted of two FXLs. Today the business services all parts of Queensland and its New South Wales operations cover all areas from the Queensland border, south to Grafton and west to Tenterfield, with each of its Isuzu trucks running their own designated route. The territory currently serviced by S & J Australian 17 (L - R) S & J Australian Scrap Tyre Disposals’ Napolioni Rokocoko (Poli), Ben Canino (Ben), and Taotasioatua Cordtz (Lal) with the company’s Isuzu FXY 1500 and FXL 1500. Scrap Tyre Disposals’ tyre collection operations covers approximately 2,100,000 square kilometres. According to Mr Hayes, there were several factors that drew S & J Australian Scrap Tyre Disposals to Isuzu trucks and assisted in forming a close partnership with Brisbane Isuzu. “When we were searching for new trucks for our “If you want quality, reliability and backup service, buy Isuzu.” With the increased focus on recycling, the need for the business’ services has increased in recent years. Transporting a large amount of scrap tyres, Mr Hayes and his team require trucks that can offer plenty of power to tow the trailers and handle the load. “Being a supplier to a Queensland leading tyre recycler, Chip Tyre Pty Ltd, we are required to distribute the tyre stock regularly and on time to meet the recycler’s daily needs,” Mr Hayes said. “We service a range of different customers, from the ‘mum and dad franchisees’ to local councils and national tyre chains, such as the Beaurepaires Group. “We have some long standing relationships with customers, some up to 20 years. We build these relationships by offering a competitive price, attention to detail and by providing a top service.” www.isuzu.com.au “Price was the first point. Isuzu offers value for money. Isuzu also provides a fantastic after sales service. We always use the night shift at the Queensland dealerships for repairs and servicing as it means less down time for our fleet,” he said. fleet, we looked at what each manufacturer had on offer. We didn’t want a truck with AdBlue as this brings the additional inconvenience and cost of sourcing the additive, and Isuzu trucks don’t use AdBlue. 18 INDUSTRY INSIDER THE FUTURE OF TELEMATICS AND AUSTRALIAN HEAVY VEHICLES Article based on webinar presentation on 8 May 2014 by Isuzu Chief Engineer Simon Humphries and ARRB’s National Technical Leader and Manager, Congestion, Freight and Productivity Dr. Charles Karl. Put simply, telematics is the combination of technology and communications to assist with managing the relationship between infrastructure, vehicles and people. T he benefits and future possibilities of intelligent transport systems and telematics have only begun to emerge seriously in the past decade, but what is clear is the increasing demand placed on infrastructure by cars and heavy vehicles will likely necessitate widespread government mandate for telematics, to ensure safer more productive roads for all users. To address the growing problem already facing industry and infrastructure to cope with the growing freight task, the Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) has said it’s likely large combinations and B-Triples (currently under trial) won’t have access to some roads unless using an approved form of telematics such as the Intelligent Access Program (IAP). The IAP is a reform developed by Transport Certification Australia under the direction of the Australian Transport Council to address challenges facing the Australian road work network. These challenges are safety, increases in freight volumes and greater number of heavy articulated trucks replacing smaller rigid trucks on the road.* Implemented in 2008, the IAP is a voluntary program operating in most states of Australia which offers heavy vehicles greater access to the road network in return for remote monitoring of their vehicles. TRUCKPOWER AUTUMN 2014 Vehicles operating under IAP are fitted with an IAPapproved vehicle monitoring unit**, which ensures vehicles are complying with road access requirements such as route adherence at appropriate speeds and permitted times. In states such as QLD and NSW, IAP is already mandatory for operators who wish to operate at Higher Mass Limits. While the uptake of telematics will certainly offer heavy vehicles the advantage of improved access to roads, which will likely result in improved service times and an advantage over competitors, it’s believed heavy vehicles across the country have the most to gain in terms of accessing the many other safety and productivity benefits of telematics. Recent research*** shows 35 per cent of trucks and fleets in the country are using telematics of some description, with 85 per cent of those users falling under the category of fleets with more than 25 trucks. The telematics usage rate amongst ownerdrivers and smaller fleets is therefore quite low. At this point, 92 per cent of telematics is being used for vehicle tracking, 49 per cent for navigation, followed closely by fatigue management, driver performance management, and driver communication messaging. 25 per cent of telematics is being used for traffic route management, 22 per cent for route planning/ scheduling, 13 per cent for electronic proof of delivery and 11 per cent for order taking/dispatch. As technology continues to develop, the capacity of telematics to improve driver safety and productivity is only going to increase, offering more efficient, safer road networks for all. Future prospects for drivers and operators engaging with telematics also looks promising, with the added safety benefits of two-way vehicle communication and driver messaging, and the introduction of electronic work diaries which will help eliminate errors, increase safety through greater compliance and offer greater assurance to customers. *‘Australia’s Intelligent Access Program (IAP): Enabling Improved Road Safety Outcomes’ (Paper from the 2010 Australasian Road Safety Research, Policing and Education Conference **https://www.nhvr.gov.au/road-access/intelligentaccess-program/about-the-iap ***ACA Research survey of telematics use, January 2014 Development of ITS & Telematics in Heavy Vehicles/Trucks 19 Prior to 1990 Little on offer in terms of ITS and Telematics. Many diesel engines had mechanical control systems. Early 1990s Electronic controls on heavy diesel engines (Detroit Series 60 and others) emerged. American standard SAE J1939 and in Europe, the CAN Bus (ISO 11898) protocol/standards established. 1990s Aftermarket fleet management systems linked to multiple external sensors. 2000 Electronic automatic tolling emerges (for e.g. Citylink in Melbourne). 2000 GPS Tracking available for low cost. 2000+ Truck & Engine OEMs offer fleet management data by depot telemetry or physical download (plugging in a computer to the truck or engine). 2005+ Aftermarket systems offer comprehensive information, online, real-time because of 2nd generation mobile networks and cheaper data transfer. 2007+ Advanced braking & collision avoidance technologies becoming available on heavy vehicles. 2008 Intelligent Access Program (IAP) introduced into most states in Australia – an Australian government reform which provides a nationally agreed platform to support current and future telematics needs of government (infrastructure) and business. 2012 IAP more flexible; other systems accepted. 2013 Co-operative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) trials overseas and in Australia – trial of vehicles talking to each other using dedicated short-range communications (DSRC, similar to WiFi) in the U.S., Australia and Europe. Could prove to be an incredible step forward in reducing number of collisions on the road. 2015 Original manufacturers in Europe have agreed they will make connected vehicle OEM offerings available as a standard or low-cost option. www.isuzu.com.au Operational pilot completed of the electronic work diary 20 IAL PARTS & SERVICE ISUZU EXPANDS MERCHANDISE AND CHILDREN’S RANGE Isuzu has expanded its popular merchandise range with the introduction of a selection of children’s toys and a truck jigsaw puzzle to keep the little ones entertained. As we enter the winter months and wetter driving conditions, it’s very important for your safety and others that your vehicle is in a safe and roadworthy condition to reduce the likelihood of any unexpected breakdowns and issues. To get started, here are some key areas of your vehicle that you should ask your local Isuzu dealer to check leading into the colder part of the year. TECH TORQUE GET YOUR TRUCK WINTER-READY 21 BATTERIES AND LIGHTS A high percentage of breakdowns in winter are caused by battery issues. To help prevent this, battery terminals should be checked for looseness, cracks, corrosion and cleanliness. All foreign material needs to be cleaned off using a brush - be sure to use a battery terminal protector to avoid contamination. WIPERS AND WINDSCREEN Check battery fluid levels, inspect the cables for any damage and also check there are no cracks or damage to the battery case. It’s essential to check your windscreen wipers are operating correctly to keep a clear view in the rainy winter months. An inspection of all lights and lenses should be carried out to check for any cracks or damage to light assemblies. Due to extreme summer heat, the rubber wiper inserts may have hardened or gone brittle and as a result won’t work as effectively. As they are a roadworthy item, it’s important to check lenses aren’t cracked as water can enter the lamp causing corrosion to terminals and electrical equipment. Also check the operation of your washers for blocked jets and top up your fluid with Isuzu washer fluid additive to assist the cleaning process of your windscreen. FUEL SYSTEM One of the most common reasons for diesel engine damage is water contamination in the fuel system. Water enables fungus and bacteria to grow – organisms that hold dust and fine particles in the fuel, blocking filters and damaging injectors. The lubricating properties of the fuel will also be reduced and increase wear of components. Diesel issues with water and fungal growth often follow wet weather, so keep an eye on your truck during these times. To prevent these issues from occurring, complete a quick inspection of the fuel tank cap to ensure the seal is not damaged or worn, and also check the fuel tank breather for any build-up, dust or foreign materials. It’s also important to use a quality fuel supplier and have your vehicle serviced when it’s due, to avoid blocked filters and breakdowns. While having your vehicle serviced at an Isuzu dealership, ask the service staff about our quality injector cleaner to prolong the life of your injectors. TYRES HEATING AND AIR-CONDITIONING Driving on wet roads with worn tyres can be very dangerous and cause aquaplaning. Aquaplaning occurs when a tyre’s treads aren’t deep enough to channel water out. As a result, the tyre will ride on top of the water, losing all traction. Although the weather is cooling down, it’s still a good idea to check that your air-conditioning is operating well. Note also that correct performance and wear rates of tyres are only achieved when the correct inflation pressures for the load conditions are used. Over-inflation can be just as much a safety risk as under-inflation, especially in wet weather. When testing the air-conditioning, check both directional control as well as the heater operation for driver comfort. www.isuzu.com.au To prevent this, tyres should often be inspected for cracks, baldness, flat spots and ruptures. Any tyres deemed unsafe or unroadworthy should be replaced immediately. Air-conditioners assist with defrosting windscreens, which allows full visibility while driving. 22 IAL WORLD The Major Motors new pre-delivery workshop in Forrestfield features eight full 30-metre workshop bays. TRUCK OF THE YEAR TRUCK OF THE YEAR 23 WINNER GREEN THUMB LANDSCAPES – NPR 300 MEDIUM GARY AND KATHRYN RUSHTON – NLS 200 4X4 TIPPER NSW landscaping business, Greenthumb Landscapes, recently purchased an Isuzu NPR 300 Medium from Midcoast Trucks to cart materials and tow trailers and machinery. Tasmanian couple, Gary and Kathryn Rushton recently jazzed up their new Isuzu NLS 200 4x4 Tipper by turning it into a camper named ‘Cooper’. “The body shop team modified the NPR’s tipper body and fitted a large tool box, in addition to two other under body toolboxes, retractable tarp, bullbar and UHF radio,” Steve Powell said. “I find the truck has enough power and is very comfortable. I like that I have a lot more space to carry loads. It has performed perfectly, I couldn’t be happier with it.” WINNER JB WILSON STONEMASONS – NPR 300 Paul Blakely purchased a new NPR 300 from Bendigo Isuzu dealership, Poyser Motors, for his business, JB Wilson Stonemasons. “I bought the NPR 300 because it is easy to get around the tight spaces of a cemetery in this truck. It always gets me close enough to the grave sites to unload the job with the Maxlift crane,” Paul said. Gary and Kathryn also gave Cooper custom and purpose built storage boxes to contain a generator, working tools and electronics. The headboard stores 40 litres of fuel and 20 litres of water. Inside the cabin the pair added a UHF radio, Isuzu satellite navigation, two 12 volt outlets and three USB multi-volt outlets. Underground drilling specialists, HTD Australia, recently added an Isuzu FYH 2000 8x4 to its fleet of exclusively Isuzu trucks. The FYH has been fitted with a 7.4 metre long vacuum excavation body which is used to analyse the location of the underground utilities and services with water pressure produced by a high-powered vacuum machine. “The Isuzu FYH 2000 meets our needs for a truck big enough not only for the vacuum body but also to accommodate the water mass the body holds when on the job,” HTD Director, Zac Chisolm, said. WINNER “We sketched the plan on our lounge room floor and then made a plywood template for the truck. The welder had the tube steel curved and we then spent three days cutting, welding and finishing the frame. Cooper was lifted onto the truck and taken to the workshop to fabricate the timber fixtures. He is made of laminated Australian hardwood plywood and heavily insulated with panel board plywood,” Gary said. “We like everything about our truck. The ease of driving, comfortable interior, quiet diesel, effortless power, driving position and excellent turning circle. Also the reliability, we have seen many other brands, parked on the side of the road. MUDGEE RESCUE SQUAD – FRR 600 “We also like the very extensive network of service centres. Regular servicing has never been a hassle for us. The truck was purchased with money donated by local residents and businesses in the NSW town. “We just love the truck and are so glad we followed our dream of being able to travel anywhere in confidence.” Volunteer organisation, the Mudgee Rescue Squad, is helping keep the people of Mudgee safe with its new Isuzu FRR 600. The FRR is used to carry all of the team’s rescue equipment and transports up to seven people to jobs in the crew cab. “The truck body contains many compartments in which we store equipment, an LED lighting system, generator, air bags and hydraulic equipment. A walkway down the middle of the truck body allows us to get easy access to our equipment and store our ladder,” Squad Secretary, Gary Dollisson, said. “The truck has been equipped with new radio communication equipment and a fridge and microwave for temporary catering. “The truck goes along beautifully. It’s a pleasure to drive, very easy to operate and extremely responsive.” www.isuzu.com.au “The GPS is brilliant, once I have visited a cemetery I can save it to my favourites and it makes it easy for the workers to find it at a later date, especially hard to find little cemeteries in the country.” To suit their travelling lifestyle, they added an Isuzu bull bar, LED lights, stainless steel Sonic animal scarers, extended the existing mirrors, added a reversing camera and tinted the windows.
