3.
Reflect the images across line ๐ฟ. Label the reflected images.
4.
What do you notice about the size of the reflected angle compared to the size of the original angle? What do you
notice about the length of IJ after it has been reflected?

Basic Properties of Reflections:
1.
A reflection maps a line to a line, a ray to a ray, a segment to a segment, and an angle to an angle.
2.
A reflection preserves lengths of segments.
3.
A reflection preserves degrees of angles.
If the reflection is across a line L and P is a point not on L, then L bisects the segment PPโ€™, joining P to its reflected
image Pโ€™. That is, the lengths of OP and OPโ€™ are equal.
5.
Reflect Figure R and โˆ†๐ธ๐น๐บ across line ๐ฟ. Label the reflected images.
a.
What changed about โˆ†๐‘ฌ๐‘ญ๐‘ฎ and Figure R after the reflection?
b.
What remained the same about โˆ†๐‘ฌ๐‘ญ๐‘ฎ and Figure R after the reflection?

Lesson Summary
๏‚ง
A reflection is another type of basic rigid motion.
๏‚ง
Reflections occur across lines. The line that you reflect across is called the line of reflection.
๏‚ง
When a point, ๐‘ƒ, is joined to its reflection, ๐‘ƒโ€ฒ, the line of reflection bisects the segment, ๐‘ƒ๐‘ƒโ€ฒ .
Problem Set
1.
In the picture below, โˆ ๐ท๐ธ๐น = 56°, โˆ ๐ด๐ถ๐ต = 114°, ๐ด๐ต = 12.6 ๐‘ข๐‘›๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘ , ๐ฝ๐พ = 5.32 ๐‘ข๐‘›๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘ , point ๐ธ is on line ๐ฟ and
point ๐ผis off of line ๐ฟ. Let there be a reflection across line ๐ฟ. Reflect and label each of the figures, and answer the
questions that follow.
2.
What is the size of ๐‘…๐‘’๐‘“๐‘™๐‘’๐‘๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›(โˆ ๐ท๐ธ๐น)? Explain.

3.
What is the length of ๐‘…๐‘’๐‘“๐‘™๐‘’๐‘๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›(๐ฝ๐พ)? Explain.
4.
What is the size of ๐‘…๐‘’๐‘“๐‘™๐‘’๐‘๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›(โˆ ๐ด๐ถ๐ต)?
5.
What is the length of ๐‘…๐‘’๐‘“๐‘™๐‘’๐‘๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘œ๐‘›(๐ด๐ต)?
6.
Two figures in the picture were not moved under the reflection. Name the two figures and explain why they were
not moved.
7.
Connect points ๐ผ and ๐ผโ€™ Name the point of intersection of the segment with the line of reflection point ๐‘„. What do
you know about the lengths of segments ๐ผ๐‘„and ๐‘„๐ผโ€™?
