6–11 January 2013 Johannesburg, South Africa Towards a new classification system Dear Legume Enthusiast th We would like to invite you to attend the 6 International Legume Conference taking place at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa, from 6 to 11 January 2013. The conference theme is Towards a new classification system. The deadline for registration and abstract submission is on 31 October 2012. Five plenary speakers will address the conference delegates: • Professor Jeff Doyle (Cornell University, USA) Provisional topic: Molecular systematics and comparative genomics • Professor Matt Lavin (Montana State University, USA) Provisional topic: Legume biogeography and niche conservatism • Professor Colin Hughes (University of Zurich, Switzerland) Provisional topic: Evolutionary dynamics in mimosoid legumes • Mr Domingos Cardoso (State University at Feira de Santana) Provisional topic: The molecular phylogeny of the papilionoid legumes: new insights from comprehensively sampled early-branching lineages • Professor Janet Sprent (University of Dundee, Scotland) Provisional topic: Legume nodulation The following themes have been identified around which the conference will be structured, but suggestions for additional ones are welcome and should be directed to Dr Stephen Boatwright ([email protected]): • Phylogeny and classification of Caesalpinioideae • Phylogeny and classification of Mimosoideae • Phylogeny and classification of Papilionoideae • Anatomy and morphology of legumes • Biogeography of legumes • Chemosystematics of legumes • Economically important legumes • Genetics and genomics • Plant-soil interactions • Invasive legumes • Global legume diversity assessment The post-conference excursion entitled “Exploring the legumes of the Highveld and Lowveld” will take place during the week of 12 to 19 January 2013. This excursion will start in Johannesburg and lead the delegates northwards through Dullstroom, Nelspruit and surrounding areas (with regular stops viewing legumes) and finally the famous Kruger National Park.
