General Information:
Chapel Road school is a school for pupils who have severe & profound learning needs. It is located on a small site in a residential area in the centre of Attleborough. The
site and buildings were not built for their current purpose and as such are old & outdated.
There is a large car park in front of the school. Entrance to the car park is through double gates - these must be closed once all young people have arrived but mustn’t be
locked. Entrance to the school building is through a door with an electronic fob entry device. Once all YP are inside this door must be closed & put on #2 setting which
allows us to get out but nobody in.
There is a busy reception area inside which holds a lot of school equipment and books. Staff to be aware that this is school property and keep YP away as best as possible.
The same applies to the main corridor which is also full of school equipment & must be treated with care & respect.
Toilets are on the left hand side and are accessible. Room 4 to the right is used as the art room during DXA and again has lots of school equipment which YP should be kept
away from as much as possible. There is also a hygiene room in the corner which is adequate but is often used as a storage area so please ensure it is safe before using.
There is an exit to the playground room here.
The playground is often used during breaks and for activities when the weather is good. The playground has many slip, trip and fall hazards such as uneven ground, play
equipment, storage containers and fences. The playground also backs on to a public road, the containing fence is very high and risk of anyone scaling it is very low. There is
a slightly lower fence that meets the carpark which is slightly easier to climb – close attention must be given to participants whilst in this area.
Further up the corridor is the kitchen – no YP should be allowed in here. Next to this is the main hall. As well as technical equipment there is a piano & a climbing frame on
one wall which YP must be kept away from. A door in the top right corner leads to the sensory room which is NOT to be used and a fire exit leading into the playground
which is the fire assembly point. The door in the top left corner although labelled Fire Exit should not be used as it leads to a dead end blocked by rubbish bins. Next to this
is a door to a long corridor which should be locked (although often isn’t) & another door leading to a storage room with tables & chairs. YP must be kept out as this will
remain unlocked
General Checklist:
Ensure any unused furniture is suitably stacked if appropriate
Make secure all electrical leads to prevent young people tripping.
