About communication
Convened faculty about what that meant – connect to student learning
Faculty will share primary burden of implementation of plan
Communication skills we want to develop – 3 outcomes: passion for professional career,
(what they do and why they do it) developed over a period of time, self
critique/critically about their own work, critically about work of others.
Develop assessment plan – Institutional Research to assist

What has to do with staff? – be aware of it
QEP – part of SACS re-affirmation
Re-affirmation – showing we are still in compliance with the standards
Doing more than status quo – infact things we want to improve

B. Professional Development — Sarah Lawrence
 Tom Murray – ECPR on Oct. 12-13
o 2012 – Emotional CPR classes offered
o Doing once or twice per year
o Trainings are all day 2 day events.
o Highly experiential
o How to best help people who are experiencing emotional crisis
 Looking for help
 Several workshops have already been scheduled:
o Sept. 11 from 11:30-12:30 Jamie Moore will present a workshop on how
to plant flowers and veggies,
o Oct. 7– Ed. Stephens will present a workshop on getting the most out of
Outlook for PC users and Oct. 21 – getting the most out of Outlook for
MAC users.
o Oct. 12 and 13, Tom Murray will conduct a two-day ECPR workshop.
o January 27, 2016 – Marcie & Sarah will show us how to get the most out
of ORBIT and Banner self-service.
o February 11, 2016 – Tom Murray will present a workshop on how to
handle stress.
o There are several more workshops planned with dates to be determined:
MS Access: working with tables, MS Access: working with queries,
nutrition/cooking workshop and a workshop on couponing presented by
Ramona Richmond.

VII. State Employees Combined Campaign – Jim DeCristo, Leslie Kamtman


Annually the state of NC has a state employees combined campaign for charities
Did not participate last year
Pres. Ross asked every campus to support the cause
The campaign is a way for us to support causes that we care about

Campaign is from now until Nov. 1
Reps of staff council – to help with distribution of getting out the materials

 Community Day – Alumni Reunion Picklestock over Labor Day weekend
 Faculty Endowed Scholarship concert – fundraiser Sat. Sept. 5 starts at 1:00, runs
throughout the afternoon.
 Chancellor’s Installation – use volunteers
 Community Day – use volunteers

IX. James Lucas, Director of Human Resources
 Policy Review email – please take time to review
 Sept. 9 – Benefits fair
 Annual training and review of Title IX – will begin in September
 Oct. – Supervisor training
 Flu Clinic – Oct. 21 in Eisenberg
 ORBIT – gives you retirement data, you should create an account if you don’t have one
 Benefitfocus to Aon, going back to Benefitfocus. Transition back will leave us in a
blackout period.

X. Requests/Announcements
 Lauren Whitaker - Last spring chaired ad hoc committee for awards, would like Staff
Council to sponsor a day or week of giving – everyone on campus gives one hour of their
time to community service event. If involved, hope you will sponsor a project. Get
cooperation of faculty council and student council. Community building for us, get
support and get publicity. Hopefully in the spring. Res lIfe does it once month, Nakita
would love to join committee
