Family Firm Case Study

FAMILY FIRM
Family Firm Case Study:
East Renfrewshire
November 2016
The Family Firm Programme is a bespoke employability programme aimed at
care experienced young people within East Renfrewshire. The programme works
intensively with young people from different care settings and is a long term
initiative which aims to build up work readiness through work placements within
the council and with local employers.
CANDIDATE A
Background
Julie* is a recent school leaver who was unsure of her next steps for the future. She had applied for a college
course in September to study admin but was unsure if this was the route which she wanted to take. She had
completed some work experience in a nursery while at school and felt that this was an area of employment
she would like to consider but didn’t have the confidence to explore.
Julie’s main barriers to employment were her lack of confidence and her anxiety around choosing the wrong
employment path. Julie had recently applied for her own tenancy and was keen to manage her own finances
rather than relying on her grandad’s support.
Course and Outcome
Julie engaged with the Family Firm programme from the outset and completed the pre-employment course in
June 2016. The programme focuses on developing work readiness skills and raising self-esteem. All participants
who successfully completed the course were guaranteed a work placement in their chosen industry. Julie
went onto complete a two week work placement at an after school club. The employer feedback was
very positive and this experience gave Julie the confidence to apply for a child care apprenticeship at East
Renfrewshire which she successfully gained.
Julie is really looking forward to taking her first step towards employment and started her apprenticeship in
October 2016.
