CENTER CITY CONNECTOR - UTILITY CONSTRUCTION PHASE 1
SPRING 2017
Before the Center City Connector Streetcar track construction can begin, water main, sewer, electrical, and natural gas utilities
must be relocated and replaced along the future streetcar route. This work will provide more reliable and resilient utilities for
customers and allow better access to those utilities after the new streetcar tracks are built. The first phase of utility work will
start in 2017 and will be focused in Pioneer Square.

Streetcar Construction
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?
Streetcar track construction (SDOT) - 1st/Jackson to 1st/Seneca
Streetcar track construction (SDOT) - 1st/Seneca to Stewart/6th
Note: We will have more to share about what to expect during the second phase of utility relocations and streetcar construction as that work
gets closer.
HOW WILL BUSINESSES BE SUPPORTED DURING THIS WORK?
The City is committed to working closely with businesses and residents along the alignment during construction.
Proactive outreach and communication is already underway and will include events, small group meetings, door-todoor outreach, fliers/mailers to businesses when updates are needed, regular website updates, phone calls, a 24/7
hotline, and more.
Crews will maintain business access throughout construction and creative signage will help direct customers to local
businesses. Sidewalks will remain open during construction except in small sections on a temporary basis.
The Small Business Development team at the Office of Economic Development has business consulting services available
to support small businesses along the route. Contact us for more info.
Improved water, sewer, drainage, electrical, and natural
gas services
Improvements to all-way scramble intersections at Pike, University,
and Cherry streets will designate pedestrian crossings more clearly
Improvements at all intersections and corners will enhance the
pedestrian experience and ensure ADA access
The new streetcar will run every 5 minutes at peak times and will
connect more people to 1st Ave to live, work, shop, and play

The first phase of water and sewer utility relocation work

we get closer to construction.

Puget Sound Energy (PSE) expects to start their first phase of natural gas utility relocation work in June 2017 and wrap up in
August 2017.
Where is this work?
• Temporary water outages
o Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) will work with
residential and business customers to determine
the best times for water outages
o SPU will provide advance notification to customers
• Most parking will be restricted along 1st Ave and load
zones will be shifted to side streets
o SDOT is working closely with businesses and
resident buildings with the goal to replace load
zones 1 for 1 within one block of the current
location; we will implement load zone changes
before the work starts
•
We are working with King County Metro to coordinate
bus routes and detours during construction
• Northbound lanes on 1st Ave will be closed to through
traffic between Jackson and Cherry streets for most of
this work starting in fall 2017
o This is to allow space to preserve the London
Plane trees in the center median
o We will work to keep a southbound lane open
during the day with intermittent closures during
nights and weekends
o There will be intermittent northbound local access
while crews move work zones and complete sections
• Multiple intersection closures
o Intersection closures will take place at night and
on weekends
