·Expected Learning Outcomes:
-Implement tools and techniques of painting with a variety of media
-Learn professionalism in your field through repeated written artists’ statements, become
familiar with a wide variety of contemporary artists and their material and conceptual
practices
-Integrate and deepen knowledge of digital media in relation to painting including digital
documentation of work and website basics, explore online multimedia platforms such as
interactive museum sites in relation to museum field trips, and become familiar with
online platforms through contributing to course documents
-Compare and discuss paintings with frequent short slide presentations that provide a
breadth of work on a given theme
-Critique our own work, and write a short review of a local gallery or museum show
depict a still life, self portrait, interior and exterior landscape, and the model through
techniques learned
-Solve problems of representation through a demonstrated understanding of color
-Use links provided on Blackboard to review images from class, watch interviews with
artists, and listen to audio segments of interest

20 Work outside of class- students are expected to spend as much time working outside
of class as in class. The classroom may be available to students during non-class hours by
request. showing evidence of having gone to student shows and exhibits outside of class

·Materials- ALL REQUIRED. Most are available at the Blick student store
-Sketchbook, hardcover 8”x10”
-Surfaces for painting: gessoed wood panels or gessoed canvas surfaces are acceptable.
No student grade canvas panels.
-Paper- pad of white 18x24 paper or larger (not newsprint), or roll of paper
-Charcoal, graphite or pencil for drawing, and eraser
-Optional: pens, ink, colored pencils
-2 or more canvases or panels equal to or larger than 18”x24” (for “animation” and
“painting from sculpture” assignments)
-Acrylic, oil, gouache, or watercolor paint
-A wide variety of brushes- bristle and sable or sable-like natural hair brushes
-White cotton rags, baby oil (for cleaning brushes of oil paint), Gamsol (not turnpentine
or paint thinner) for oil painting, empty containers (non-food)
-Sharpie/tape to label jars
· Attendance
Being on time, and coming to every class is important to your performance throughout
the semester. Absences lower your grade. If you have to miss a class, talk to me ahead of
time, before or after class. If you are sick, I need a doctor’s note. Be in class for the full
period from beginning to end.
· Withdrawal
After three absences, students will not receive a passing grade in this class.
· Incompletes
I do not give incompletes
· Extra Credit
You can receive extra credit for attending any opening or art exhibit (listed on this
syllabus or otherwise) and writing a one-page response/review. You can also receive
extra credit to design and paint related imagery on courtyard wall next to the new garden
with other classmates

9/18 In class: Field trip: meet in the lobby of Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego
(MCASD) Downtown to see “James Drake, Brain Trash”. Bring your sketchbook, pencil
and $4 cash. 1100 & 1001 Kettner Blvd. (between Broadway and B Street) San Diego,
CA 92101 extra $120 for security guard, opens at 11 normally.
Homework: Write a two page review of the show, double-spaced, font 12. Discuss at
least two works we saw.

March 2015, call for submissions for Jan 20, 2015. Cash award prizes will be offered.
