20-Second Move-About

20-Second Move-About
™
Objective:Students will identify the length of time for proper hand washing as being
20 seconds and demonstrate the proper technique for hand washing.
Nutrition Notes: I t’s a misconception that if your hands look clean, they are clean. Germs
are too small to see, so it’s crucial for good health to wash hands properly,
every time, before eating.
Equipment/materials: Watch or clock with a second hand (optional)

1. T
ell students: Before you eat it’s important to
wash your hands for 20 seconds. You need to use
warm water and soap; it’s important to scrub
your hands, fingers and nails to get rid of dirt
and germs that you can’t see.
2. Demonstrate the correct way to wash hands
by pretending to:
●● Turn on the water and wet hands
●● Squirt soap onto wet hands
●● Scrub your hands, fingers, nails, and wrists on
both sides. This should take 20 seconds. If you
have a clock students can watch the second
hand for you, count aloud to twenty, say the
ABCs or sing the Happy Birthday song.
●● Rinse hands with water
●● Dry hands with a clean towel

them you want them to learn how long
20 seconds is.
4. For twenty seconds students can count and…
●● March in place
●● Stretch for the sky using alternate arms
●● Do side bends
●● Wiggle or dance
●● Touch the floor 20 times, any way they want
●● Hop on one or two feet
●● Let students choose a move
5. A
sk the students: Did 20 seconds seem like a
long time? Remind them that they need to wash
their hands for 20 seconds to get rid of dirt and
germs. Ask students if they usually wash their
hands at home before they eat. When else is it
important to wash your hands? [After sneezing,
coughing, using the bathroom, touching a pet,
touching garbage, after changing a diaper and
before or after caring for someone who is sick.]
