Position Description
Title: Assistant Coach for Howell Sea Serpents age group swim group
Compensation: $10/hr part-time not to exceed 37 hours per week. Applicants must pass background
check.
General Info:
Candidate should have a passion for the sport and the ability to inspire and guide swimmers. This yearround swim club located in Howell, MI (South of Lansing, North of Ann Arbor) is run through the Howell
Area Parks & Recreation Authority. Comprised of swimmers from 5 to 18 years it is led by the head
coach who reports to the Aquatic Director. Ideal candidates should be professional, timely, reliable, and
work well with others. The Howell Sea Serpents train at the Howell Area Aquatic Center, home to an L
shaped 6-lane, 25-meter pool. Our goal is to emphasize proper technique and safety while working with
swimmers of all ages and experience levels.
Supervision Received:
Works under the supervision of Head Coach and Aquatic Director

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Follow training guidelines created by head coach to maximize both the recreation/fun side of
the 10 and under swimmers as well as the highly committed swimmers up to age 18.
Assistant Coach will be scheduled for specific practices and swim meets by head coach and will
be required to be on deck unless approved ahead of time. In the event of approved absence,
replacement coach must be scheduled.
Responsible for safety of swimmers, making sure workouts are not causing injuries including
being aware of any medical conditions and the Emergency Action Plan at the Aquatic Center
should the need arise.
Emphasize proper stroke techniques based on head coach’s guidelines and following their
progression for each training group.
Conducting test sets, dry land sessions following the season plan, tracking performance and
communicating this information to parents, attending coaches’ meetings and all other functions
related.
Contribute suggestions for performance awards (i.e. Swimmer of the month) and notify head
coach of all noteworthy performance, times, cuts, or records to be used in marketing and public
interest.
Working nights and weekends are expected.
Assist head coach with attendance rosters for all swim levels.
Demonstrate a positive self-image with athletes, and team sportsmanship in all manner
Notify head coach of any broken, damaged, or needing equipment or supplies.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Coaching membership in good standing with USA swimming or attainable within 90 days –
CPR/AED/First Aid certification and American Red Cross Life Guard certification (or equivalent)
Previous coaching, instruction, or competitive experience.
Candidates should have experience that shows exceptional communication and motivation skills
with children and parents, taking into consideration varied social, emotional, and physical
attributes and possess an attitude of including and team building.
Communication and professionalism skills in dealing with parents, volunteers, and advisory
committee as well as other staff.
Must be prepared to develop talent, rather than manage great athletes.
