Something to ponder…
• Testing capacity helps to increase one's capacity
• Challenge strengthens capacities by gradually
using them more, in increasingly complex and
difficult situations
• Challenges do not always have positive outcomes
• Need for support, encouragement, and other
forms of positive regard and reinforcement

AVALANCHE SURVIVAL
Yesterday, four teams of
mountaineers set out on a race to
conquer an unclimbed peak in the
Himalayas. The Canadian party
chose a long, but safe route, whilst
the British, Chinese and Russian
teams chose a steep and dangerous
route up the mountain.

ADDITIONAL POINTS
TO CONSIDER:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
The Canadians will certainly conquer the mountain first if
the remaining members of the other teams do not agree to
work together.
One of the British team is badly injured and needs constant
medical attention.
The last hundred metres of the climb are on ice like glass.
The best climber is a Russian.
One of the Chinese team is a doctor.
Unhurt members can return to base camp in half a day.
It will take two days for one climber to accompany the
injured Briton to Base Camp.
It will take two days to climb the remaining distance to the
peak and a further day and a half to climb down to Base
Camp.
AVALANCHE SURVIVAL
SOLUTION
• The Chinese doctor should stay with the injured
Briton. They should keep the two-man tent, two
sleeping bags, the saucepan, all medical
equipment and enough food for two days.
• Meanwhile one Russian and one Brit should return
to Base Camp, with half a day’s food each, to get
help for the injured American.
• One representative of each country should then set
off to climb the peak. They should take with them
the ice axes, the four man tent, a sleeping bag
each, the rope, the remaining cooking equipment
and enough food for three and a half days each.
• The climbing team should stop 25metres below the
peak, when the rope runs out. The Russian climber
should attempt the remainder of the climb alone.
He should then place the flags of all three countries
on the peak, as a symbol of international cooperation.
